Rosemary grows best outdoors in full sun and well-drained soil. To keep it through winter, match your approach to local cold conditions: grow it in the ground where it is reliably hardy, or use a movable pot where protection is needed. Indoors, give it the brightest light available and water only when the potting mix is dry enough to need it.

1. Choose the sunniest outdoor spot

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus, also called Rosmarinus officinalis) needs full sun to grow well. Choose a bright, open location rather than a shaded bed or patio corner. University of Maryland Extension also gives a soil pH range of 6.5–7.0; treat that as its specific growing guidance, not a universal pass-or-fail requirement. Maryland Extension’s rosemary guidance

2. Make drainage a priority

Rosemary tolerates dry conditions once established, but it struggles in waterlogged soil. Penn State Extension warns that wet, poorly drained clay is unsuitable; in a garden bed, improve drainage or choose a better-drained site rather than letting water collect around the roots. For a pot, use well-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Penn State Extension

3. Decide between a garden bed and a movable pot

Plant rosemary in the ground if your local winter conditions suit the variety and you do not expect to need to move it. Choose a container if you may need to shelter it seasonally. Illinois Extension recommends container culture for plants that will be brought indoors because established garden rosemary does not transplant well. A pot also makes moving the plant between a patio and a protected location practical. University of Illinois Extension

4. Check local hardiness guidance before relying on outdoor survival

Rosemary’s winter tolerance depends on region and variety, and published regional guidance is not expressed as one universal cutoff. Illinois Extension says it is not reliably hardy in zone 6 or colder. Wisconsin Extension describes it as winter-hardy only to zone 8a and recommends indoor protection for potted plants before the first frost. Maryland Extension describes hardiness in areas where winter temperatures stay above 5°F and advises Northeast gardeners to move plants indoors or to a protected location. These are regional recommendations, not interchangeable guarantees for every cultivar or garden microclimate. Illinois Extension, Wisconsin Extension, Maryland Extension

5. Bring potted plants in before frost when local advice calls for it

Do not wait for a hard freeze to decide what to do with a tender potted plant. Illinois Extension’s Midwest guidance is to leave container-grown rosemary outdoors into fall and bring it inside just before frost; Wisconsin Extension similarly advises bringing pots inside before the first frost. Use the frost guidance for your area rather than treating either recommendation as a universal calendar date. Illinois Extension, Wisconsin Extension

6. Move the plant gradually between outdoor and indoor conditions

A sudden change in light, temperature, and airflow can stress a plant. When practical, transition rosemary over several days: start in a sheltered outdoor spot, then move it to its intended indoor location. In spring, reverse the process by returning it outdoors gradually, beginning in a protected, bright area before placing it in its full-sun growing spot. This is a cautious acclimation approach; the Extension guidance cited here does not prescribe a fixed day-by-day schedule.

7. Give indoor rosemary the brightest light you have

Place the pot at the sunniest suitable window, ideally where it receives strong direct light. Indoor light is often the main constraint: Iowa State University Extension says, “Light is often the most limiting factor affecting herbs grown indoors.” A bright room can still provide less usable light at the plant than an outdoor position, so watch for weak, sparse growth. Iowa State Extension

8. Add a grow light if the window is not enough

If winter daylight at the plant is inadequate, use a full-spectrum LED or fluorescent grow light. Iowa State Extension notes that indoor herbs may need supplemental light; Illinois Extension says supplemental lights commonly need to run 12–16 hours daily when winter windows do not supply enough light. That duration is conditional guidance, not a requirement for every plant or room. Position and operate the light according to its manufacturer’s instructions and assess whether growth remains compact and healthy. Iowa State Extension, Illinois Extension

9. Favor a cool, bright indoor location when possible

Warm, dim rooms can be difficult winter quarters for rosemary. Maryland Extension recommends a cool, draft-free spot with strong sunlight. New Hampshire Extension says a room range of 45–55°F may improve survival, but this is a source-specific suggestion rather than a guaranteed ideal for every home or cultivar. Choose a bright location away from heating vents and cold drafts, while keeping the plant in conditions you can monitor. Maryland Extension, New Hampshire Extension

10. Check the soil before watering

Do not water by a fixed weekly schedule. Indoors, check the potting mix and water when it is dry to the touch, before the plant wilts; make sure excess water can drain away. Rosemary can dry quickly in indoor conditions, but that is not a reason to keep its roots wet. Illinois Extension warns that excess water can cause root rot, while New Hampshire Extension advises waiting until the soil is very dry, watering thoroughly, and allowing it to drain. Use the plant’s mix and drying rate as your guide. Illinois Extension, Iowa State Extension, New Hampshire Extension

11. Inspect for pests and keep air moving

Check leaves and stems periodically, especially after bringing the plant indoors. Maryland Extension specifically recommends looking for spider mites and aphids. Avoid crowding rosemary among other plants, and keep it out of stagnant, overly warm corners; inspection helps catch trouble before it spreads. Maryland Extension

12. Harvest and prune selectively

Pick tender tips and foliage as needed during active growth, and prune to control size or encourage a compact shape. Avoid cutting deeply into thick, bare wood: UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County advises, “Stems should never be cut back hard into thick bare wood, only into thinner branches bearing foliage.” If you want more plants, Illinois Extension says stem cuttings root easily; seed germinates slowly and may take years to produce usable plants. Illinois Extension, UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County
