To keep a flowering potted mum looking its best, give it bright indirect light indoors, moderate temperatures, and evenly moist soil in a pot that drains. Remove faded blooms and do not let the plant sit in water. If you want to plant a mum outdoors or keep it through winter, first check whether it is a garden mum suited to your local climate: florist mums are generally less hardy.
1. Identify whether you have a florist mum or a garden mum
Florist mums are commonly sold in bloom as seasonal displays. Garden mums are the better choice when your goal is to plant outdoors or establish a hardier perennial. The University of Florida IFAS recommends garden mums for their greater hardiness compared with florist mums (Chrysanthemums).

Labels and local growing advice matter: hardiness varies by type, cultivar, and climate, so the name “mum” alone cannot tell you whether a particular plant will survive winter outside.
2. Give an indoor flowering mum bright, indirect light
For a florist mum kept indoors, place it near a bright window where it receives good light but not direct sun. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach gives this guidance for indoor chrysanthemums (Growing Chrysanthemums in Iowa). Outdoor garden mums have different needs; choose a suitably sunny garden spot rather than applying indoor-window advice to them.

3. Keep indoor temperatures moderate
Iowa State recommends 60–70°F for indoor florist mums. Treat this as that source’s practical guidance, not a universal threshold for every cultivar or growing setup.
4. Check the soil before watering
There is no single reliable watering calendar for every potted mum: pot size, room conditions, and growing medium affect how quickly it dries. Check the soil regularly and water before the plant wilts. Missouri Extension advises avoiding both wilting and a pot that remains in water (Care of Flowering Potted Plants).

5. Let excess water drain away
Use a container with drainage holes, and empty any saucer or cachepot after watering so the roots are not left standing in water. Penn State Extension includes drainage among chrysanthemum care needs (Chrysanthemum Care).
If the nursery pot sits inside a decorative cover without drainage, Iowa State advises taking the nursery pot out to water it. Let excess water drain before putting it back.

6. Remove faded flowers
Pinch or snip off faded flower heads to keep the display tidy. The University of Florida IFAS notes that deadheading also encourages new blooms. Small garden pruning snips are optional; clean fingers or scissors may be enough for soft stems.
7. Trim dead or diseased growth
Remove dead or diseased plant parts as you notice them, as Penn State Extension recommends. If you use pruning snips, keep them clean and make careful cuts without damaging healthy stems.

8. Expect a temporary display, not a guaranteed bloom date
Missouri Extension says potted mums may last several weeks to a month with proper home care. That is a general expectation, not a promise: flower age at purchase and home conditions affect how long blooms remain attractive.

The Iowa-specific warning that florist mums are not winter hardy applies to Iowa; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every region. For outdoor planting, choose a garden mum recommended for your area and follow local extension guidance.

10. Treat winter survival in a pot as uncertain
A mum that might overwinter in garden soil may face different conditions in a container, where roots are more exposed. The available guidance distinguishes florist from garden mums but does not establish a reliable winter outcome for every cultivar, pot, and region. If keeping it for another season matters, seek local advice for the exact type and growing conditions rather than assuming an indoor display plant will survive outside.
11. Do not add fertilizer automatically
General planting advice for garden mums may include slow-release fertilizer, but the cited indoor florist-mum guidance does not establish that feeding is needed to maintain a purchased plant through its current bloom. Follow the plant label or local advice for a garden mum you are establishing outdoors.
