Lavender, rosemary, sage, ferns, cyclamen, hydrangeas, California poppies, nasturtiums and lantana are among the plants UC Integrated Pest Management (UC IPM) lists as less attractive to slugs and snails. Yarrow, wormwood and ornamental grasses are additional options for drier, full-sun gardens, according to University of Minnesota Extension. These plants may sustain less damage, but none is a guaranteed slug or snail repellent: local conditions and pest pressure matter.

What plants repel slugs and snails?

“Repel” can overstate what the evidence shows. UC IPM describes some plants as less attractive to slugs and snails, not immune to damage. These pests tend to favor succulent foliage, and choosing less appealing plants can make a garden easier to manage. The options below do not share a proven repellent mechanism, and the cited sources do not rank their effectiveness.

12 plants to consider

Plants UC IPM identifies as less attractive

  1. Lavender (Lavandula spp.): Its highly scented foliage may be less appetizing to slugs and snails, according to UC IPM’s guidance. Suitability still depends on your climate and growing conditions.
  2. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus): UC IPM includes this aromatic herb among plants less attractive to the pests.
  3. Sage (Salvia spp.): UC IPM also lists scented sage. University of Minnesota Extension includes sage among perennials for drier, sunny gardens.
  4. Ferns: UC IPM includes ferns among commonly grown plants that may be less attractive. Fern species have differing growing requirements, so choose one suited to your site.
  5. Cyclamen (Cyclamen spp.): UC IPM lists cyclamen among less attractive garden choices.
  6. Hydrangea (Hydrangea spp.): Hydrangea is another example in UC IPM’s list; the source does not say every species or cultivar will avoid damage.
  7. California poppy (Eschscholzia californica): UC IPM names California poppy as an option for areas with dense slug and snail populations.
  8. Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus): UC IPM includes nasturtium among less attractive plants. That does not establish universal resistance.
  9. Lantana (Lantana spp.): UC IPM lists lantana among commonly grown choices that may be less attractive.

Additional choices for dry, sunny gardens

University of Minnesota Extension lists these perennials for drier, full-sun conditions. That supports their suitability for that kind of landscape, not a direct finding that they repel slugs or snails.

  1. Yarrow (Achillea spp.): A perennial option for a drier, sunny garden. Check which variety suits your local conditions.
  2. Wormwood (Artemisia spp.): Another plant Extension includes for dry, sunny sites; treat it as a landscape choice, not a proven active repellent.
  3. Ornamental grasses: Extension includes these among its choices for dry, full-sun gardens. Growing needs vary by variety.

Are there slug-resistant plants?

Some plants may be less attractive or sustain less damage, but “slug-resistant” should not be read as “slug-proof.” Plant selection can reduce the difficulty of management; it does not guarantee that a plant will be untouched, especially when populations are dense. There is no comparative efficacy ranking for the twelve choices above in the cited guidance, so it would be misleading to call one the strongest repellent.

How to make plant choices part of slug management

Plant selection works best alongside changes to the conditions that help slugs and snails thrive. UC IPM recommends combining measures, including reducing moisture and removing shelter.

  • Reduce excess moisture: Avoid keeping the garden unnecessarily damp, while still meeting the needs of the plants you grow.
  • Remove hiding places: Clear or manage shelter where slugs and snails can remain undisturbed.
  • Match plants to the site: Climate, sun exposure, soil and variety affect whether an alternative plant will thrive. The dry, full-sun recommendations from Minnesota Extension are specific to those conditions, not a universal planting guide.
  • Ask for local guidance if pressure is heavy: Regional extension advice can help account for local species and conditions.

Do marigolds repel slugs?

No. Oregon State University Extension says slugs love marigolds, so marigolds are not a repellent recommendation. They can instead be used as edge trap plants: check them for slugs and remove any you find.
