The original “11 Best Landscape Design Software for Beginners in 2023” roundup was published on May 7, 2023. Its list is a dated snapshot, not a verified current ranking: product availability, pricing, device support, and features may have changed. For a new project, choose by workflow—photo overlays, flexible 3D modeling, or detailed plans and documentation—rather than assuming one program is best for every beginner.

The 11 tools named in the 2023 roundup

The May 7, 2023 article lists these products. The list records what that article named; it does not establish that each tool is still available, beginner-friendly, or offered at the same price today.

Because the source page is dated 2023 while its search listing displays “2026” in the title, treat the year in that listing as a display discrepancy—not proof that the roundup was updated. Check the dated article and verify any product directly with its maker before investing time or money.

Choose software by the result you need

For trying ideas on a photo of your yard

A photo-first planner lets you visualize elements against an image of the actual space, which can make it easier to discuss layout ideas before buying plants or materials. iScape’s FAQ says its free version lets users place plants, lawns, pathways, and other outdoor elements over a yard photo. The same FAQ lists Pro at $29.99 per month or $299.99 per year in U.S. dollars; these are vendor-listed prices, not guaranteed current offers. Check iScape’s FAQ for current plan details.

DreamPlan Home Design and Landscaping Software Free for Windows [PC Download]
  • Easily design 3D floor plans of your home, create walls, multiple stories, decks and roofs
  • Decorate house interiors and exteriors, add furniture, fixtures, appliances and other decorations to rooms
  • Build the terrain of outdoor landscaping areas, plant trees and gardens
  • Easy-to-use interface for simple home design creation and customization, switch between 3D, 2D, and blueprint view modes
  • Download additional content for building, furnishing, and decorating your home

Photo overlays are useful for visual planning, but they are not the same as a measured construction plan. Confirm dimensions and site conditions separately before using a concept to order materials or build.

For terrain-aware, flexible 3D modeling

SketchUp’s landscape architecture page describes importing terrain imagery with geolocation, studying real-time shadows, using third-party rendering extensions, and exchanging 2D and 3D files. That points to a more flexible modeling workflow than placing objects on a yard photo; it does not establish that SketchUp is the easiest choice for a beginner. For planting plans and professional documentation

Some landscape tools focus on accessible garden layouts; others support more involved CAD, planting, grading, 3D modeling, or project documentation. If the plan must be coordinated with construction or shared with a professional, check the exact drawing, measurement, and export features in the edition you are considering. DynaScape describes Sketch3D as a companion designed to work with SketchUp and Design, with more than 1,000 landscaping icons for 3D rendering. Its product pairing illustrates a professional workflow, not a requirement for a homeowner’s concept plan. Review DynaScape’s product and pricing information.

What to check before choosing

Ease of use, project requirements, supported platform, available assets, and cost are useful comparison criteria; the right trade-off depends on whether you are sketching an idea or preparing detailed documentation. XPPen’s comparison guide discusses these selection factors.

A practical starting point

  1. Write down the decision the design needs to support: visualizing planting, testing a layout, estimating dimensions, or documenting work.
  2. Choose a tool type that matches that task: photo overlay for visual concepts, 3D modeling for flexible spatial studies, or a documentation-focused product for more technical plans.
  3. Confirm the current product name, supported device, price, and trial terms on the vendor’s own site before creating a project.
  4. Test a small version of your yard or project. Check whether you can enter dimensions, use suitable plants and objects, and export or print the result in a usable format.
  5. For construction decisions, verify measurements and site conditions independently; a visual mockup alone does not establish grading, drainage, or build-ready specifications.

For additional market context, TechRadar’s roundup describes Realtime Landscaping 2026 Pro as Windows-only, a one-time purchase with a trial and extensive plant and object assets. Treat those as editorially reported details and confirm the current edition and terms with the vendor before choosing it. Read TechRadar’s landscape design software roundup.
