An old wheelbarrow can become a useful container garden and a distinctive garden feature. The best approach depends on its condition, the plants you want to grow and whether you want to keep the original finish or change it. These ten ideas range from loose flower mixes and seasonal displays to herbs, strawberries and nested pots; each starts with a stable barrow and adequate drainage.
10 vintage wheelbarrow planter ideas
1. Keep the patina and plant a loose flower mix
Let faded paint or a green patina supply the vintage character, then plant a relaxed mix of flowers rather than a tightly formal arrangement. Gardening Know How presents an aged green wheelbarrow as garden art, showing how the vessel itself can contribute to the display (Gardening Know How).

2. Grow strawberries
A wheelbarrow that still holds soil can make a strawberry planter, whether it is metal or wood. Keep the fruit within reach for picking, and address any oversized opening before adding soil so the growing medium stays in place while excess water can drain. Empress of Dirt outlines these considerations in its wheelbarrow planter tutorial.
3. Make a movable lettuce or herb garden
Use the wheelbarrow as a small container garden that can be repositioned if the light or heat becomes unsuitable. DIY Danielle describes growing lettuce after adding drainage holes, while This Old House suggests herbs as another option (DIY Danielle; This Old House). A loaded barrow can be awkward to move, so choose a practical spot before filling it.

4. Create a flower display that appears to spill out
Plant flowers in the barrow and continue a related planting onto the ground beside it, as if the color were flowing from the container into the garden. Homedit suggests this as a design effect; it is a visual arrangement, not a guarantee of how plants will grow (Homedit).
5. Rotate the display with the seasons
Use the barrow as a changing seasonal feature: Homedit gives pansies for early color, begonias or petunias for summer, and mums in fall as examples. Match the varieties to your local climate and the light at the chosen site rather than assuming one planting schedule suits every garden (Homedit).

Succulents can make a sculptural display in a wheelbarrow. This Old House includes them among possible display plants, but the appropriate potting mix, light and watering depend on the particular varieties. Choose plants with compatible conditions instead of treating all succulents as interchangeable (This Old House).

7. Build a kitchen-herb feature
Plant herbs you actually use, grouped according to their light and watering needs. A wheelbarrow gives them a defined place near a patio or kitchen door, but not every herb has the same growing requirements. This Old House describes a wheelbarrow herb planter and recommends container potting mix suited to the plants (This Old House).
8. Turn a wooden barrow into a cottage-style flower box
Wood gives the display a softer look than metal. Before planting, check whether the back or bottom is open; Designing Idea notes that an open back may need boarding to contain the planting medium. Mesh over drainage openings can help keep material from escaping without blocking water flow (Designing Idea).
9. Nest pots or add a raised insert
Set separate pots inside the barrow if you want to change plants or maintain them individually. Alternatively, a raised second planting layer can add growing space and dimension. Empress of Dirt describes an insert approach, while Designing Idea shows separate pots as another option (Empress of Dirt; Designing Idea).

10. Make the barrow a garden focal point
Use the wheelbarrow to give visual structure to a corner, fence line or patio edge. Homedit recommends choosing the position before adding soil; that is especially useful when a filled barrow would be difficult to shift. Decide whether it is a fixed display or a genuinely movable planter before planting (Homedit).

Check its condition and contain the soil
- Inspect the tray, handles, frame and wheel for stability, and deal with sharp edges before handling or planting.
- Use direct planting only if the barrow can hold soil. If it has an oversized opening or an open back, cover or board the area as needed; nested pots are another way to avoid filling the entire vessel.
- Decide whether to use a liner, mesh, landscape fabric or hardware cloth to contain the growing medium. Empress of Dirt describes hardware cloth and landscape fabric, while Designing Idea suggests mesh over drainage holes (Empress of Dirt; Designing Idea).
Provide drainage, then place the planter
Standing water can damage roots, so provide a way for excess water to escape. This Old House suggests evenly spaced drainage holes with landscape fabric over them. Empress of Dirt suggests holes at least 1/4 inch across if the vessel lacks drainage and hardware cloth for an oversized opening. These are source-specific approaches; the right treatment depends on the barrow’s construction and openings (This Old House; Empress of Dirt).
Set the wheelbarrow where you intend to keep it before adding soil. Soil makes it heavy and awkward to move, and once loaded the display must remain stable. A working wheel can help with repositioning, but it does not remove the need for a secure resting position (Empress of Dirt; Designing Idea).

Choose a suitable growing medium and watch moisture
Use container potting mix suited to the plants rather than assuming garden soil will work equally well for every planting. Water thoroughly, then check moisture regularly. This Old House cautions that a wheelbarrow planter can dry out faster than expected and may need frequent watering in hot, dry conditions (This Old House).
Can you grow food in a rusty or vintage wheelbarrow?
The appearance of rust alone does not establish whether a particular wheelbarrow is suitable for edible crops. The finish, prior use and materials of an unknown vintage vessel are not established by its appearance. DIY Danielle raises the possibility of lead or other contamination in a barrow of unknown history and suggests lining it or using it for non-edibles if concerned (DIY Danielle). If you cannot establish the vessel’s history or materials and want to avoid that uncertainty, use separate pots inside it or reserve it for ornamental plants. The planter ideas reviewed do not establish the food safety of any specific vintage finish.
Metal or wood, original finish or repaint?
Metal preserves the familiar utilitarian wheelbarrow look; wood creates a softer flower-box effect. Either choice still needs to contain the growing medium and drain properly. You can keep weathered paint or patina as part of the display, or repaint if the original surface is damaged or does not suit the garden. DIY Danielle mentions metal-compatible paint as an option, not a requirement (DIY Danielle). In either case, avoid assuming a new or old finish is suitable for growing food unless its materials are known.
