In a late-2022 forecast for 2023, eight interior designers told MyDomaine they expected kitchens to move beyond crisp, white minimalism toward warmer colors, stronger contrast, decorative detail, and personal expression. These are expert predictions—not a survey of homeowners or a claim about what is popular today. Here are the 11 ideas they anticipated, with practical ways to consider them in a renovation or a smaller update.

What tied the 2023 kitchen forecasts together?
The designers’ ideas shared a shift away from white-on-white restraint and toward kitchens with more visual warmth and character. That could mean a dramatic stone surface, darker wood, warmer neutrals, architectural detailing, or a personal object on display. The forecast did not measure how widely homeowners adopted these choices; it captures the opinions of eight interior designers interviewed for MyDomaine.
Which kitchen design trends did designers predict for 2023?
1. Bold, strongly veined marble
The forecast anticipated marble with more pronounced veining and contrast on backsplashes, countertops, or a statement island. Wendy Word, principal designer of Wendy Word Design, said, “Stronger veined marbles give you that heightened visual contrast that instantly engages the eye.” The design effect is a prominent natural pattern rather than a visually quiet surface.

2. Curated open shelves and art
Instead of exposing storage across an entire kitchen, the idea was to create a few intentional display areas for selected objects or artwork and keep everyday tableware behind cabinet doors. Tara Paquette, junior designer at Aspen & Ivy, described the kitchen as a place for both function and personal expression. Tiffani Baumgart, principal designer of Tiffani Baumgart Interiors, put the art angle this way: “Kitchens have long been art-deprived. That’s going to end in 2023.”
3. Butler’s pantries—and butler’s walls
A butler’s pantry is a separate area beside the kitchen that can provide storage and space for food preparation; the forecast notes that it may include a sink or dishwasher. For homes without room for a separate pantry, a butler’s wall offers a smaller-scale approach: shelves and cabinets for barware, glassware, dishes, and serving pieces. Ginger Curtis, principal designer of Urbanology Designs, said, “This trend is all about the ability to host with ultimate ease.”

4. Darker wood finishes
Darker stains were expected to add warmth and contrast, especially alongside lighter finishes. Mary Beth Christopher, principal designer of MBC Interior Design, said, “These darker woods bring in character and warmth, while also adding contrast to lighter elements.”
5. Taupe and bone in place of white
The forecast pointed to taupe and bone as warmer, slightly deeper alternatives to warm white. Curtis said, “We are seeing a shift, [with people using] taupe [and] bone to replace white.” The brackets in that quotation are editorial insertions in the source.

6. More ornate architectural detail
Rather than treating the kitchen as a plain box, designers anticipated more decorative trim and furniture-like millwork, along with exposed or wood ceilings, beams, coffered ceilings, and ceiling medallions. Paquette described bespoke design as a broader direction: “Bespoke kitchens are the trend of the decade, as homeowners [embrace] artistic custom design in all areas of their homes.” The bracketed word is editorially supplied in the source.
7. Statement range hoods
The range hood was forecast to become a focal point instead of blending quietly into the background. Word summarized the change with the line, “In 2023, range hoods are the new backsplashes.”

8. Mixed metal finishes
The forecast proposed combining finishes such as bronze, brass, copper, stainless steel, and blackened steel rather than matching every metal in the room. Word said, “Mixed metals in the kitchen will be a strong trend in 2023.” Jackie Terrell, principal designer of Jackie Terrell Studio, also suggested that frequently used tools and cookware could contribute to the kitchen’s visual character.
9. Expressive lighting
A distinctive chandelier or playful semi-flush mount was presented as a way to introduce personality without reworking the entire kitchen. Kirsten Conner, principal designer of Kirsten Conner Design, said, “Where we are seeing more design risk-taking, however, is with kitchen lighting.” Among the forecasts, lighting is a particularly contained idea to consider when a full remodel is out of scope.

10. Glass-door refrigerators
Glass-front refrigeration was framed as another way to display attractive dishes and kitchenware, particularly as everyday items move off open shelves. Erica Thompson, designer and organizer at Organized By Design, said, “Glass-door fridges are back.”
11. Nostalgic and personal touches
The final idea was to mix contemporary function with meaningful older pieces: a family photograph, a thrifted painting, or antique serving ware. Choose details that fit your home, your routines, and the scale of work you want to take on. The designers’ predictions do not establish a single formula, performance advantage, or best material; treat them as design directions to weigh against your own project.
- For a small visual change: Consider a distinctive light fixture, a restrained display area, or one personal vintage object.
- For a more layered look: Pair a warmer neutral or darker wood with lighter elements, or combine metal finishes intentionally.
- For a larger remodel: Consider whether a bold stone surface, statement hood, architectural detail, or pantry arrangement suits the room and its intended use.
- For a calmer result: Use display selectively and keep most everyday storage concealed, rather than adopting open shelving everywhere.
The practical choice is not whether to follow every forecast. It is which one or two details support the way you use the kitchen and the character you want it to have.
