The best composite deck pattern depends on the shape of the deck, the visual effect you want, and how much extra framing the layout requires. These 11 ideas range from a simple picture-frame border to herringbone, tile, and curved details. Treat them as design concepts, not build plans: borders and angled patterns need support planned into the framing, and the selected decking manufacturer’s installation instructions and local requirements should guide construction.
Start with the structure behind the pattern
A picture frame is a perimeter border laid perpendicular to the interior boards. Square-edge boards create the exposed border edge; the frame can match the field for a subtle outline or contrast with it for a stronger accent. A wider border has more visual weight, so consider its proportion to the deck rather than choosing width in isolation. Perimeter frames, tile inlays, and diagonal boards can require additional joists, blocking, fasteners, and a layout designed around board ends and direction changes. Trex says its example picture-frame layout may need four or more additional joists depending on the design; that is a Trex-specific example, not a universal quantity. Its installation guidance also says to adjust framing for special patterns and that Trex decking cannot be used structurally. [Trex picture-framing guide; Trex 2023 Decking Installation Guide]
11 composite deck ideas
1. Contrast-color picture frame
Outline the deck with square-edge boards in a different shade from the main field. The contrast makes the perimeter read as a deliberate border and can help distinguish the deck’s shape. Trex and Fiberon both describe contrasting borders as a way to create an accent or custom look. [Trex picture-framing guide; Fiberon picture-frame decking]

2. Subtle matching frame
Use the same color for the perimeter and field boards when you want a defined edge without a strong color break. The perpendicular board direction provides the frame; the matching shade keeps it quiet. [Trex picture-framing guide; TimberTech deck patterns]
3. Double or triple border
Build a wider outline from two or three rows of border boards for a more substantial visual frame. TimberTech describes picture frames made with one, two, or three boards, while Trex notes that side-by-side border boards can give the edge more weight. Choose a width that suits the deck’s scale. Run a border across the deck to break up a long field or frame separate sections. Depending on the layout, a center border can avoid end-to-end butt joints and divide one large surface into multiple framed areas. Plan the supporting blocking before laying out the boards. 5. Diagonal infill inside a frame
Keep a square-edged perimeter frame and lay the interior boards at an angle for a directional contrast. Angled boards change where their ends land, so the framing and blocking must be designed for that orientation rather than added as an afterthought. [Trex picture-framing guide; Trex 2023 Decking Installation Guide]
6. Framed tile inlay
Divide a broad square or rectangular deck into framed panels, with the inlay boards in neighboring panels running perpendicular to one another. The repeated geometry suits a layout with enough room for the panels to read clearly. TimberTech says this pattern needs a specially arranged substructure designed for the board orientations and may warrant contractor installation. [TimberTech deck patterns]
7. Herringbone feature panel
Use herringbone as an inset or runway rather than covering the entire deck. A contained feature can make the pattern a focal point while leaving the surrounding field in a simpler board direction. TimberTech describes herringbone runways and patterned inlays as layout options. [TimberTech herringbone patterns]

8. Full-surface herringbone
Lay boards at 45 degrees so their ends create a repeating broken zigzag. This makes a strong pattern across the whole surface, but it also increases layout and support demands: every board end needs joist support. TimberTech recommends joists at 12 inches or less on center for diagonal boards and notes that support depends on board width and how far the pattern extends. Follow the chosen product’s instructions rather than treating this brand-specific recommendation as a universal specification. [TimberTech herringbone patterns]
9. Chevron
Arrange boards so their ends meet at a point, creating an inverted-V rhythm. Chevron differs from herringbone’s broken zigzag: its defining feature is the meeting point. TimberTech treats both as distinct pattern options. [TimberTech herringbone patterns]
10. Multi-width pattern
Vary board widths to create a less uniform field without changing the overall direction of the deck. TimberTech cites 3.5-inch, 5.5-inch, and 7.25-inch widths as examples in a particular multi-width collection; those dimensions are not universal composite-board sizes. Confirm that the selected collection supports the intended combination. [TimberTech deck patterns; TimberTech herringbone patterns]

11. Curved or level-defining border
Use a curved border to mark a seating area or change the outline of a deck feature, or use border boards to distinguish levels and steps. TimberTech describes heat bending for curved layouts and notes that deck lights can emphasize stair borders. Whether a curve is feasible depends on the selected product and its installation requirements. [TimberTech deck patterns]
Choose a pattern by scale and build complexity
| Layout | Visual effect | Planning considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Matching or contrast picture frame | Quiet outline or a defined perimeter accent | Square-edge border boards, perimeter support, and compatible fastening details |
| Double or triple frame; center breaker | Heavier outline or distinct deck zones | More border material and blocking; layout determines whether a center border can avoid butt joints |
| Diagonal infill or herringbone | Directional field or pronounced zigzag | Angled board ends need planned joist support; TimberTech recommends 12-inch-or-less on-center joists for diagonal boards |
| Framed tile | Repeated panels with alternating board directions | Substructure arranged for the inlay orientations; TimberTech says contractor help may be appropriate |
| Chevron | Pointed, inverted-V geometry | Careful layout and supported board ends; follow the selected product’s installation instructions |
| Multi-width boards | Variation within a generally consistent direction | Confirm widths are offered together in the chosen collection |
| Curved or level-defining border | Marks a seating zone, level change, or stair edge | Verify product-specific bending and border installation requirements |
There is no universal price premium for these patterns in the manufacturer guidance cited here. TimberTech notes that tile patterns add substructure material and likely contractor labor; picture framing also calls for extra substructure material. The actual scope depends on the deck design, product, and framing plan. [TimberTech deck patterns]
Quick Recap
Plan the installation before choosing boards
- Decide the pattern and board direction first. Map borders, panel breaks, angles, and board ends against the framing so each required end has support.
- Use product-specific decking and fasteners. Trex’s guide describes square-edge border boards and fastening details for Trex products. Fiberon advises using its own instructions and warns against using another manufacturer’s hidden fasteners with Fiberon decking because of installation and warranty concerns. Do not assume clips, screws, or plugs are interchangeable across brands. [Trex picture-framing guide; Fiberon picture-frame decking]
- Account for the framing requirements. TimberTech says picture frames need perimeter spacing and blocking suited to the design; its tile guidance calls for a new substructure arranged for the pattern. [TimberTech deck patterns]
- Check code and permit requirements locally. Use code-approved structural framing material and confirm applicable requirements with the local building authority. Trex’s installation guide says its decking is not for structural applications. [Trex 2023 Decking Installation Guide]
