Flowers that bloom in April can include low-growing bulbs, woodland perennials, flowering shrubs and trees. In temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere, tulips, daffodils, crocuses and other spring favorites may be in flower, but April is a planning window—not a guarantee: local climate, weather and plant variety all shift bloom dates.
The examples below draw chiefly on observations from gardens and extension services in Virginia, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, so use them as regional guides rather than a universal calendar. For current local timing, check a nearby botanical garden or extension service.
11 flowers that bloom in April
This list uses “flowers” broadly: it includes bulb and corm flowers, a woodland perennial, flowering trees and a shrub. The dates are approximate and may differ even among varieties of the same plant.

Virginia Cooperative Extension includes it among spring bulbs; Missouri Botanical Garden lists a cultivar with a February-to-April bloom window. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s spring bulb guide; Missouri Botanical Garden’s spring bulb list.
Why April bloom dates vary
Weather and location affect when plants flower. Lewis Ginter notes that bloom timing changes with weather, and its early-to-mid-April tulip peak and early-April bluebells describe conditions in Richmond, Virginia—not a continent-wide schedule. A familiar common name can also cover species and cultivars with different bloom dates, particularly for magnolias, cherries and other flowering trees.
The calendar evidence here is centered on temperate U.S. gardens. It does not establish precise dates for every hardiness zone, a different hemisphere or a particular garden. For local planning, use a nearby botanical garden’s seasonal updates or ask a regional extension service about the variety you intend to grow.

Planting spring flowers for next year
Many entries on this list are spring-flowering bulbs, which are generally selected and planted in fall for a later spring display. Exact planting time varies by region: Iowa State University Extension identifies October as ideal for Iowa, not as a universal date.
- Choose firm, solid bulbs; avoid stock with mold or soft spots.
- Use well-drained soil, which is important for nearly all bulbs.
- Plant bulbs in clusters or groups for a stronger visual effect.
- Follow instructions for the specific bulb’s depth and spacing; these vary with bulb type and size.
- Check light needs by plant. Virginia Cooperative Extension says full sun is preferable for several spring bulb groups, while daffodils, grape hyacinths and glory-of-the-snow tolerate partial shade. Treat that as guidance for those examples, not a universal rule for every plant.
