Start by checking for leaks, then change a few daily habits; upgrades to efficient fixtures can help when old equipment needs replacing. In the United States, the EPA says household leaks waste an average of 180 gallons of water a week—about 9,400 gallons a year. These steps can reduce waste, though actual savings depend on your home, equipment and routines.
1. Check your water bill for unusual increases
Compare recent bills with earlier ones, allowing for seasonal changes or a change in household occupancy. A sudden increase without an obvious explanation can be a clue to a leak or irrigation problem. Your utility may offer a usage history or alerts.

2. Look for visible leaks and damp spots
Inspect faucets, sinks, toilets, hose connections and any visible irrigation lines. A steady drip, wet patch or unexplained dampness deserves attention. Repair simple problems promptly; if you cannot locate the source or the leak is behind a wall or under a slab, contact a qualified plumber.
3. Test toilets for silent leaks
A toilet can leak from its tank into the bowl without making much noise. To check, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait about 10 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, water is passing through.

5. Keep showers reasonably short
Use a timer or choose a simple cue, such as finishing before a song ends, to avoid letting a shower run longer than needed. A shower uses less water than a bath when shower duration is controlled; a long shower can erase that advantage.
6. Run the dishwasher only when it is full
Wait until the dishwasher has a full load before starting it. The EPA estimates that this can eliminate one weekly load and save an average family nearly 320 gallons a year. The amount saved varies with how often your household runs the machine and its settings.

Instead of leaving the tap running continuously, plug the sink or use a basin for washing and rinsing. This makes it easier to use only the water needed for the dishes.
8. Consider a WaterSense-labeled showerhead when replacing an old one
WaterSense is an EPA label for products that meet efficiency and performance criteria. The EPA estimates that an average family can save 2,700 gallons of water a year by replacing a showerhead with a WaterSense-labeled model. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed household result; savings depend in part on the old showerhead and how the shower is used.

Before buying, check that the showerhead will fit the existing connection and that its spray pattern suits your needs. The label signals efficiency, but it does not remove the need to check compatibility.

If a faucet or toilet needs replacement, look for a WaterSense-labeled model where available. The EPA says qualifying WaterSense products use at least 20 percent less water than standard products while performing as well as or better than them.

A compatible faucet aerator may also be a practical retrofit. Confirm the faucet’s connection and the aerator’s fit before purchasing. Check with your local water utility for rebates: programs and eligibility differ by location. The EPA estimates that replacing all old, inefficient toilets in a home with WaterSense-labeled models can save nearly 13,000 gallons a year; that figure is an EPA estimate, not a promise for every home.
10. Tune outdoor watering to your yard and local rules
If your property has a yard or automatic irrigation, check the system for leaks, blocked or misdirected sprinkler heads, and water running onto pavement. Direct spray toward plants and adjust watering to avoid runoff. Follow local watering restrictions and guidance: appropriate schedules vary with climate, plantings and local requirements.
For a system that is difficult to tune, consider a certified irrigation professional or a WaterSense-labeled weather-based controller. The EPA estimates that an average home can save up to 15,000 gallons annually by replacing a clock-based irrigation controller with a WaterSense-labeled controller. Actual savings depend on the existing system, weather and watering practices.
What WaterSense means
WaterSense is a U.S. EPA program that labels products meeting specified water-efficiency and performance criteria. The label is a useful starting point when replacing fixtures, but product availability, local rebates and applicable rules vary. The EPA reports that the average person in the United States uses 82 gallons of water per day at home, based on a 2015 estimate from the U.S. Geological Survey.
