Axes and hatchets are shaped for different jobs: a thin cutting edge works across wood fibers, while a wedge-shaped head is designed to split along them. The right choice depends on the task, the tool’s size and reach, and how much control the user can maintain. Here are 10 useful categories, from firewood tools to specialized timber-shaping implements.

How to tell the main types apart

Start with the direction of the work. Felling and limbing cut across the grain; splitting drives into wood along the grain. The head profile follows that difference: a cutting axe generally has a thinner edge, while a splitting tool has a broader wedge that pushes wood apart. Manufacturers distinguish these profiles in their descriptions of axes and axes and mauls.

Size matters too. A longer handle offers more reach and power but is less compact; a shorter tool is easier to carry and may suit controlled, close work. Choose a head weight and handle length you can manage rather than assuming that heavier or longer is automatically better. Names can vary by maker and region, so use the intended task and head shape as your guide.

Types of axes and hatchets

1. Felling axe or forest axe

A felling axe is designed to cut across wood fibers, especially for felling trees and limbing. Its thinner cutting profile is different from the wedge of a splitting axe. Longer handles provide reach and power; compact forest axes are easier to carry but trade away some reach. See the maker descriptions from STIHL and Gränsfors Bruk.

2. Splitting axe

A splitting axe is intended for logs and firewood. Its broader, wedge-shaped head drives into the wood and forces it apart along the grain. If you are preparing firewood, this is the category to consider; choose a size and weight that feels comfortable and controllable, as Fiskars’ axe guidance recommends.

3. Splitting maul

A splitting maul is a related tool for demanding rounds. It belongs with splitting tools, not with felling axes: its purpose is to split wood, and manufacturers list mauls alongside splitting axes. Its heavier build is not a reason to choose it for every firewood job; match the tool to the wood and to your ability to control it. STIHL’s axe and maul categories distinguish these tools.

4. Double-bit axe

A double-bit axe has a blade on each end of the head, a documented pattern in the Forest Service’s *An Ax to Grind: A Practical Ax Manual*. It is a distinct design, not simply an ordinary axe with an extra edge: do not assume both edges are suitable for the same task or equally serviceable. Their use depends on each edge’s condition and the work being done.

5. Broad axe or broadax

A broad axe is a specialized timber-shaping tool used to hew logs square or shape planks. Its broad, flat edge and specialized geometry support controlled work close to the timber. It is not a substitute for a general-purpose chopping or splitting axe. The Forest Service’s tool manual and Gränsfors Bruk’s axe categories describe this family of tools.

6. Hatchet

A hatchet is a compact axe used for tasks such as carving, hunting, camping, shingling, and roof repair. The Forest Service manual describes a standard hatchet as typically having a head under 2 pounds and a handle under 20 inches. Treat those measurements as the manual’s descriptive benchmark, not a universal size standard: the evidence does not establish one boundary used by every maker.

7. Broad hatchet

A broad hatchet is a smaller version of the broadax, intended for shaping rather than general-purpose chopping. The Forest Service manual notes its use in historic preservation work. Its specialized edge and purpose distinguish it from a small camping hatchet.

8. Carpenter’s axe or carpenter’s hatchet

Carpenter’s axes and hatchets are woodworking and log-building tools for shaping timber. They are distinct in purpose from a general camping hatchet, though product names vary among makers. Check the maker’s description for the specific shaping or carpentry work the tool is designed to do; Gränsfors Bruk groups these tools among its axe models.

9. Adze

An adze is a related timber-shaping tool with a cutting edge set crosswise to the handle. Depending on the edge form, it can flatten a surface or hollow wood for log building and woodworking. It is not simply another name for a chopping axe. The Forest Service manual and Gränsfors Bruk’s tool categories cover adzes and related shaping tools.

10. Universal or multipurpose axe

“Universal” or “multipurpose” is a manufacturer’s general-purpose category, not a guarantee that one head profile is optimal for every job. For example, Fiskars describes a universal (felling) axe within its axe range. Read the maker’s stated intended tasks, then compare the profile and size with the work you actually need to do.

Which type should you choose?

Type Primary task What to look for
Felling or forest axe Cut across the grain for felling and limbing Thinner cutting profile; longer handle for reach or compact size for portability
Splitting axe Split logs and firewood along the grain Broader wedge profile; a weight and size you can control
Splitting maul Split demanding rounds A splitting tool suited to the work; it is not a felling axe
Double-bit axe Distinct two-edged axe pattern Assess each edge’s condition and suitability for the task
Broad axe or broadax Hew logs square or shape planks Broad, flat, specialized edge for controlled timber work
Hatchet Compact tasks including carving, camping, and repair work Portable size; the Forest Service’s dimensions are a reference, not a standard
Broad hatchet Small-scale timber shaping Specialized shaping edge, not general chopping
Carpenter’s axe or hatchet Carpentry, log building, and timber shaping Follow the maker’s description; naming varies
Adze Flatten or hollow wood Crosswise edge suited to the intended shaping task
Universal or multipurpose axe General-purpose tasks stated by its maker Verify the claimed uses; no one profile suits every job

Use axes cautiously

Tool choice does not replace safe technique. The Forest Service’s 1999 manual cautions: “Take a cautious, rather than aggressive, approach to chopping your first logs.” It also notes that its older illustrations may not show modern personal protective equipment. Consult the current instructions for your tool, use protection appropriate to the task, and seek hands-on instruction for felling or other hazardous work. Placement, control, stance, and technique matter.
