Do not rely on a tree skirt, a deterrent spray, or a low decorative fence to stop a determined dog. Anchor the tree, place a stable barrier around it, keep hazardous items out of reach, and confine the dog whenever the tree cannot be monitored.
These measures apply to both real and artificial trees. An artificial tree is not automatically safe: it can still tip, shed needles or plastic pieces, expose electrical cords, and contain ornaments or lights that a dog may chew.

1. Anchor the tree so it cannot tip
Start with the structural risk. A dog brushing against the branches, pulling at a low ornament, or jumping toward the tree can shift its center of gravity. A falling tree can injure the dog, damage the room, and expose broken glass, hooks, or live electrical connections.
Use a wide, stable stand on a level surface. For a full-size tree, add a discreet connection to a wall or ceiling where practical. A clear fishing line or purpose-made Christmas tree anchor strap can help stabilize the upper portion, but the attachment must be secured to a sound structural point and kept out of the dog’s reach.
- Position the tree away from furniture that could help a dog climb into it.
- Check that the stand is fully tightened and that the trunk is centered.
- Test the tree gently from several directions before decorating.
- Remember that an anchor supplements a barrier and supervision; it does not make climbing or chewing safe.
2. Put a stable gate or exercise pen around it
Physical exclusion is the most dependable everyday solution, especially when the dog is persistent or no one can supervise. Place a freestanding pet gate, puppy exercise pen, or other secure barrier around the entire tree, including the stand and its water reservoir.

For a purpose-built option, compare a Christmas tree fence for dogs or dog gate for Christmas tree. Measure the tree’s footprint first, then allow room for the stand, watering access, and a margin that prevents a dog from reaching through the bars.
Choose a barrier based on the individual dog, not just the product description:
- A tall, determined jumper may clear a low decorative fence.
- A strong dog may push over a lightweight gate.
- A small dog may squeeze through wide gaps.
- A persistent chewer may damage plastic or wooden panels.
Secure the gate if it can slide, tip, or be nudged aside. A barrier is particularly important when you are cooking, opening gifts, hosting visitors, sleeping, or leaving the house.
3. Keep the lower branches boring
The lowest branches are the high-impact zone for noses, paws, tails, and curious mouths. The simplest decoration plan is to leave the bottom section bare. You can decorate the upper branches while keeping all fragile, sentimental, sharp, or small items out of reach.
If you want a fully decorated tree, use only durable decorations in the accessible area and attach them securely. Even a non-breakable ornament is not necessarily safe to swallow, so physical distance remains preferable to relying on the material alone.
Before allowing access, walk around the tree at the dog’s eye level. Look for dangling pieces, loose hooks, exposed wire, reachable cords, and anything that could be pulled down.

4. Skip tinsel, ribbon, string, and edible garlands
Do not use tinsel around a dog that can reach the tree. Tinsel, ribbon, twine, popcorn strands, cranberry garlands, and similar linear decorations can be swallowed and may become gastrointestinal foreign bodies. They can cause an obstruction or intestinal damage and may require surgery.
Keep candy canes, food-based garlands, salt-dough ornaments, and other edible or chewable decorations away as well. Placing them higher is not an adequate solution if the dog can reach the tree by jumping, climbing, pulling, or knocking it over.

5. Use shatter-resistant ornaments and secure them
Glass ornaments can break into sharp pieces that cut a dog’s mouth or paws. Their metal hooks can also cause injury if chewed or swallowed. In reachable areas, choose durable plastic, wood, or fabric decorations instead of glass.
You can compare shatterproof Christmas ornaments, but treat “shatterproof” or “pet-safe” as a product-category description—not a guarantee that the ornament is safe to ingest. Avoid ornaments with small detachable parts, sharp edges, long hanging loops, or toxic finishes when the dog can reach them.

Check the fasteners each day. No fastening method prevents a dog from chewing an ornament that is still within reach, so remove high-risk decorations rather than merely securing them.
6. Protect and reroute electrical cords
Keep light cords off the floor and away from the lower branches. Route them behind furniture or along a wall, secure them so they cannot swing or become a tug toy, and inspect them regularly for teeth marks, crushed insulation, or exposed wires.
Chewing an electrical cord can cause oral burns, electric shock, heart or lung complications, or death. Unplug the tree when you leave the room if the dog could reach the cord or lights.
A pet cord protector or chew-resistant sleeve can add another layer. For example, the Small Pet Select Heavy Duty Cord Cover is marketed for cords used around puppies, dogs, and cats and is described as a cut-to-length expandable sleeve. Check the current product specifications before buying; a cover is not bite-proof and does not justify leaving a determined chewer unsupervised.
7. Block access to live-tree water
If you use a live tree, prevent the dog from drinking from the stand’s reservoir. Tree water may become stagnant and can contain bacteria, sap, fertilizer, preservatives, or other additives. Consumption may cause stomach upset or other problems.
The preferred order of protection is:
- Make the water inaccessible: place the entire tree behind a stable barrier.
- Add a cover: consider a Christmas tree water cover or covered stand if it fits securely and does not create a new chewing hazard.
- Use a skirt only as visual cover: a skirt may hide the reservoir, but it will not stop a determined dog.
Do not add chemicals, fertilizer, aspirin, preservatives, or other treatments to the water if a dog may reach it. Keep the area around the stand dry to reduce slipping and wipe up spills promptly.
8. Avoid flocking and remove fallen needles
Flocked trees and decorations coated to look like snow can cause problems if the material is swallowed. Real and artificial needles may also irritate or injure the gastrointestinal tract when chewed or ingested.
Vacuum or sweep fallen needles frequently, and remove loose plastic branches or pieces from an artificial tree. If your dog persistently mouths the branches, an unflocked artificial tree may reduce some of the exposure, but it does not remove the risks from tipping, lights, cords, ornaments, or chewing.

Do not describe every ordinary Christmas tree as poisonous. The practical concerns are access to needles, sap or oils, and contaminated tree water, along with the other decorations and electrical equipment installed on the tree.
9. Move holiday plants, candles, batteries, and gifts out of reach
The tree is only one part of the holiday hazard zone. Keep these items inaccessible:
- Holly, mistletoe, lilies, and other holiday plants
- Candles and candle lighters
- Loose batteries, including button batteries
- Chocolate, wrapped food, candy, and sugar-free products containing xylitol
- Gifts containing food, small toys, cosmetics, or batteries
- Wire, hooks, packaging, and discarded ribbon
Poinsettias can cause irritation or gastrointestinal upset, but it is inaccurate to describe them as one of the most deadly holiday plants for dogs. Mistletoe, holly, lilies, and certain other plants warrant greater concern. The safest approach is to keep all potentially harmful plants away from animals and verify a plant’s risk with a veterinarian before bringing it indoors.
For open flames, use flameless battery-operated candles where suitable. Secure the batteries just as carefully as you would secure the candle: punctured or swallowed batteries can injure pets.

Put the undecorated tree in place first and let the dog investigate while you are present. Reward calm behavior, redirect chewing to an appropriate toy, and prevent rehearsals of climbing, pulling, or mouthing. Add lights and ornaments only after the dog is ignoring the tree—and continue using a barrier for a dog that remains interested.
Maintain normal meals, exercise, sleep, and quiet time during the holidays. Visitors, unfamiliar objects, and noise can increase stress and make unusual behavior more likely. Give the dog a secure retreat away from guests and the tree.
When you cannot actively monitor the dog, close the room, use a secure gate or pen, or place the dog in a comfortable, safe area. An indoor pet camera can provide an alert, but it cannot prevent access. A camera is a supplement to physical separation, not a substitute for it.

What to do if your dog chews or swallows something
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog chews a live electrical cord, swallows tinsel, ribbon, a hook, a salt-dough ornament, a toxic plant, chocolate, xylitol, a battery, or an unknown substance. Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, electrical burns, vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, tremors, collapse, or other concerning symptoms.
Do not wait for symptoms after a known high-risk ingestion and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so. In the United States, Pet Poison Helpline lists a 24-hour telephone service at (855) 764-7661, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center lists (888) 426-4435. Confirm current instructions and any applicable fees directly with the service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an artificial Christmas tree safer for dogs?
Not automatically. Artificial trees avoid some live-tree issues, but dogs can still chew plastic needles, knock the tree over, ingest loose pieces, reach ornaments, or bite electrical cords. Use the same barrier, anchoring, decoration, and supervision plan.
Will a Christmas tree skirt stop my dog from drinking the water?
Usually not. A skirt may hide the stand, but a determined dog can push it aside. Make the reservoir inaccessible with a stable barrier first; a properly fitted water cover is only an additional layer.
Can I put tinsel on the upper branches?
It is best to skip tinsel and other linear decorations when a dog has access to the tree. Tinsel, ribbon, string, and food garlands can be swallowed and may cause an obstruction or intestinal injury.
How tall should a dog gate around a Christmas tree be?
There is no universal safe height. Choose a barrier that the individual dog cannot jump, climb, push over, or squeeze through, and measure around the complete tree footprint rather than only the trunk. Persistent jumpers and chewers should be kept in a separate secure area.
What should I do if my dog bites a Christmas-light cord?
Disconnect power safely without touching the dog if it is still in contact with the cord, then contact a veterinarian promptly. Electrical injuries can involve burns, shock, heart or lung complications, and delayed symptoms.
The Bottom Line
Build the safety plan around prevention: stabilize the tree, put a genuinely secure barrier around it, keep the lower branches free of hazardous decorations, protect cords and tree water, and separate the dog whenever supervision ends. Products such as gates, anchor straps, cord covers, and shatter-resistant ornaments can implement that plan, but none is fail-safe on its own.
