If bees are gathering around one patio, doorway, or play area, focus on making that small space less inviting and limiting accidental contact—not on driving bees out of the whole yard. Bees visit flowers for nectar and pollen, and some native bees nest in soil, hollow stems, and other cavities. The steps below are practical ways to manage activity near people; most are not proven bee repellents.
10 practical steps for reducing bee activity near people

Cover food and sweet drinks outdoors
When eating or drinking on the patio, keep food covered between servings and put lids on sweet drinks. This is sensible outdoor housekeeping, not a tested way to repel bees.

Close trash and recycling containers
Use containers with secure lids and close them after use. This helps keep exposed food residue away from the immediate seating area; it does not remove the flowers or nesting places bees rely on elsewhere.

Clean spills promptly
Wipe up drink and food spills on tables, decks, and paving after meals. Treat this as a simple way to avoid leaving residue beside people, rather than as a guaranteed deterrent.

Move flowering pots away from the seating area
If bees are regularly foraging in containers beside a chair or doorway, relocate those pots to another part of the yard. Keep flowers elsewhere: bees use them for food, and a small planted area can support pollinators. Choose plants suited to local conditions; the University of Maryland Extension notes that plant choices and growing conditions vary by region.

Keep unneeded standing water away from the patio
Empty or move water containers beside the seating area when they are not needed. This is a location-management measure, not an established bee-repellent method; the reviewed extension guidance does not establish it as a way to clear a yard of bees.

Use screens and keep doors closed
Repair or use window and door screens, and close doors when practical to reduce the chance of bees entering the home. Screening manages access indoors; it does not keep bees from visiting outdoor flowers.

Wear shoes in grass and avoid disturbing foragers
Wear footwear when crossing grassy areas, and give bees space while they are visiting flowers. Avoid stepping on or otherwise disturbing bees as they forage.

Do not swat at or handle bees
If a bee comes near, move away calmly rather than swatting or trying to pick it up. Avoid disturbing a bee that is feeding on a flower.

Leave nesting habitat undisturbed away from busy spots
Some native bees nest underground or in hollow stems. Iowa State University Extension advises minimizing disturbance to bee nests, many of which may be in soil or hollow stems. Do not cover bare soil across the whole yard or clear out stems everywhere; if a particular nesting area is beside a heavily used path or play space, seek local advice about the specific situation.

Get local help for a nest or colony near people
Repeated flower visits are different from a nest or colony located close to a doorway, play area, or other place where people must pass. Ask a local cooperative extension service or a qualified local professional to assess the situation before taking action; not every bee or nest needs to be removed.
Do natural sprays or essential oils keep bees away?
There is no established basis here for recommending mint, citronella plants, coffee grounds, vinegar, mothballs, ultrasonic devices, or household essential-oil sprays as reliable ways to repel bees from a yard. A 2025 review by H. F. Abou-Shaara discusses context-specific studies of temporary honey-bee repellency around pesticide-treated areas, including research into plant-based materials such as garlic and citronella extracts. It does not establish a dependable household product or a yard-wide result.

“Natural” does not mean proven effective or harmless. Avoid using pesticides as casual bee deterrents, including products marketed as organic. UF/IFAS advises avoiding chemicals on blooming plants because visiting bees may be harmed; if pesticide use is necessary for another reason, follow its label and local guidance. University of Maryland Extension also advises limiting pesticide use and protecting pollinator habitat.
Why keeping bees out of an entire yard is the wrong target
Bees are drawn to resources they need, especially flowers, and some native bees use soil and cavities for nesting. Broadly removing those resources would work against pollinator habitat without guaranteeing that bees would stay away. The more practical goal is to reduce close encounters in one defined area while leaving useful habitat elsewhere. As University of Maryland Extension puts it: “Nature usually provides all that pollinators need; we just need to stay out of the way and resist disturbing their natural environment.”
Advice about plants and pollinator habitat depends on location. The University of Maryland Extension discusses regional variation, while UF/IFAS guidance is specific to Florida. For planting or a nest concern, consult your local cooperative extension service rather than assuming advice for another region applies.
