WD-40 Multi-Use Product can help free stuck parts and provide light lubrication, but it is not the right choice for every surface or job. Avoid these ten common mistakes—especially spraying brake friction surfaces, energized circuits, or plastics the manufacturer identifies as incompatible.
1. Spraying brake friction surfaces
Keep WD-40 Multi-Use Product off brake pads, discs, drums, and any other surface that must create friction. WD-40 warns that contamination can impair braking performance. If the product gets on a braking component, do not assume wiping it away makes the brake safe; follow the vehicle or equipment maker’s service instructions and have the system inspected as appropriate. WD-40 UK’s FAQ
2. Spraying an energized electrical circuit
Do not apply Multi-Use Product to an energized circuit. WD-40 UK specifically advises against it, noting that the metal can or straw could touch an energized contact. Do not improvise electrical work: follow the equipment maker’s instructions and use a product intended for the task. WD-40 UK’s FAQ
3. Assuming every plastic is compatible
WD-40 lists most plastics as compatible, but names polycarbonate and clear polystyrene as exceptions. If you cannot identify the material, test a small, inconspicuous area first and check the item maker’s guidance before applying product more broadly. WD-40’s plastic compatibility guidance

- PINPOINT PRECISION: The chisel-shaped, fibrous tip allows for precise application of Original WD-40 Formula exactly where it's needed. The non-aerosol format keeps lubricant from getting on the parts that don’t need it
- PORTABLE & POCKET-SIZED: Great for keeping on-hand, in your pocket, glove box, or tool belt for quick fixes anywhere you go
- PRECISE, CONTROLLED APPLICATION EVERY TIME: Easy-to-hold, multi-purpose lubricating pen and chiseled tip allow for precise application exactly where you need it. Press quickly to dispense a small amount of formula or press longer for a steady, controlled flow
- CLASSIC WD-40 FORMULA: Stop squeaks, protect against corrosion, loosen rusted parts, and displace moisture with the trusted, Classic WD-40 Formula you love
- USE ANYWHERE & EVERYWHERE: Get the Job Done Right with the perfect, pocket-ready tool at work, at home, and on-the-go
4. Using it on safety glasses or clear headlight lenses
Safety glasses and headlight lenses may be polycarbonate, which WD-40 identifies as a plastic to avoid. Do not spray Multi-Use Product on them simply because they look like ordinary hard plastic. Use the cleaning or maintenance method specified by the glasses or vehicle manufacturer. WD-40’s plastic compatibility guidance
5. Applying it to clear, rigid food packaging
Clear, rigid food packaging may be made from polystyrene, another named material to avoid. Keep Multi-Use Product off that packaging rather than relying on its appearance to judge compatibility. WD-40’s plastic compatibility guidance

- With Smart Straw, never lose the straw again
- Penetrates, loosens and frees stuck, frozen or rusted parts
- Excellent corrosion prohibitor, protects metal against mpisture and corrosive elements
- Removes grease, grime, water deposits and much more
- Displaces moisture
6. Letting it contact food or food-preparation surfaces
WD-40 Company says its products are not intended for direct food contact. Some WD-40 Specialist products may be suitable around food-processing equipment only when there is no direct food contact and the specific product has the relevant NSF mark. Check the product label and mark; do not treat that conditional use as approval for Multi-Use Product on food or food-preparation surfaces. WD-40 UK’s FAQ
7. Treating “lubricant” as a one-size-fits-all answer
Multi-Use Product has lubricating components, but that does not make it the best lubricant for every mechanism. WD-40 UK says a more specialised lubricant may be more suitable where longer-lasting or heavy-duty lubrication is needed. Match the product to the job—such as light lubrication versus a more demanding application—and follow the equipment maker’s maintenance guidance. WD-40 UK’s FAQ

- Drives out moisture and quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuits
- Acts as a corrosion inhibitor to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements to prevent rust
- Frees sticky mechanisms, loosens rust-to-metal bonds and helps release stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts
- Removes grease, grime, gunk, gum, tar, sap, super glue, sticker residue, and other sticky stuff from multiple surfaces
- Lubricates moving parts such as hinges, wheels, pulleys, rollers, chains, and gears
8. Using Multi-Use Product when a contact cleaner is called for
For sensitive electrical equipment that needs cleaning, WD-40 positions WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner for that purpose; its product page describes it as quick-drying and leaving no residue. That does not make it suitable for every device: follow the equipment maker’s instructions, test plastic in an inconspicuous place, and avoid applying it to adhesives, screens, or keyboards. 9. Treating a long online list of uses as an official, tested guide
A list of suggested uses is not automatically a manufacturer endorsement. In a WD-40 Company PDF, the company says user-submitted uses “do not constitute recommendations or suggestions for use of WD-40 Multi-Use Product by WD-40 Company” and “have not been tested by WD-40 Company.” Use those lists as unverified suggestions, not as proof that a particular application is suitable. 10. Ignoring the label or spraying indiscriminately
Before applying Multi-Use Product, read the directions for that specific container and check whether the material, equipment, and task are appropriate. WD-40’s compatibility guidance recommends testing an inconspicuous area when material suitability is uncertain. Apply only where intended rather than spraying broadly around nearby parts, especially where a friction surface, electrical contact, food-contact area, or sensitive material could be reached. Start with what you need the product to do, then check the surface and the equipment maker’s directions. Multi-Use Product, a dedicated contact cleaner, and a specialised lubricant are not interchangeable just because they come from the same brand.
