You can often soften clothing wrinkles without an iron by using a care-label-safe dryer refresh, shower steam, a light mist, or wrinkle-release spray. Start by checking the garment’s care label, then smooth and hang the item promptly. These approaches vary by fabric and wrinkle severity; none is guaranteed for every garment.
Check the care label before choosing a method
A no-iron approach can still expose clothing to heat or moisture. The Federal Trade Commission explains that care instructions communicate regular-care guidance and warnings, including when ironing could damage an item. Follow the garment’s label before putting it in a dryer, applying water or spray, or steaming it. The FTC’s care-label consumer guidance and Care Labeling Rule explain the role of those instructions.
10 ways to smooth wrinkles without an iron
1. Try a dryer refresh or steam cycle
If the garment’s label allows dryer heat, use a refresh, wrinkle-release, extended-tumble, or steam option if your dryer has one. Available settings differ by model, so check the appliance instructions. Frigidaire also advises removing items as soon as the cycle ends and hanging or folding them promptly.
2. Tumble clothes with a clean, damp towel
For dryer-safe clothes, add a clean, damp towel and run a short cycle at a heat level permitted by the garment label. Whirlpool suggests about 10–15 minutes for this method; that is practical manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee or a comparative test result.

3. Use a damp washcloth for one or two items
A damp washcloth can serve the same purpose as a larger towel when refreshing just one or two pieces. Use it only with clothing that can safely be tumble-dried, and choose heat according to the care label.
4. Add dryer balls if you already use them
During a dryer refresh, dryer balls may help separate clothes and circulate air. They are an optional accessory, not a wrinkle-removal treatment on their own; follow the garment’s dryer instructions.

5. Take clothes out promptly and hang or fold them
When the dryer cycle ends, remove clothes and hang or fold them rather than letting them sit in a pile. Frigidaire recommends prompt removal, and avoiding an overloaded dryer can help prevent new creases from forming.
6. Hang the garment near a hot shower
For a travel-friendly option without a dryer, hang the garment in the bathroom while running a hot shower. Keep it away from splashes, close the bathroom to hold the steam, and allow about 10–15 minutes or longer. Whirlpool cautions that shower steam may not work well on severe wrinkles or some fabrics.

7. Lightly mist, smooth by hand, and hang
For a fabric that tolerates moisture, lightly mist the wrinkled area with water, smooth the cloth with your hands, and hang it to dry. Avoid soaking the garment, and test first in an inconspicuous area if you are unsure how the fabric or dye will react.
8. Apply wrinkle-release spray
Follow the spray’s label. Downy’s directions say to spray from about eight inches away until the fabric is slightly damp, then tug and smooth the garment and hang it to dry. Its instructions also describe the spray as helping with static cling.

9. Use a handheld garment steamer
A handheld steamer is a reusable tool for smoothing clothes without an iron. Steam only garments whose care instructions permit it: Philips describes its steamer for ironable fabrics, not as universally suitable for every textile. Keep the steamer moving and follow its instructions as well as the garment label.
10. Prevent creases while handling laundry
Hang or fold clothes promptly after washing or drying, and avoid overloading the dryer. These habits do not remove wrinkles that are already set, but they can reduce creasing before it becomes a touch-up job.

Choose a method by what you have and how wrinkled the garment is
| Method | What it needs | Useful when | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dryer refresh or damp towel | A dryer and, for the towel method, a clean damp towel or washcloth | The garment is dryer-safe and you have access to a dryer | Use only label-appropriate heat; shower steam may be less reliable for severe wrinkles, and no comparative success rates are established for these approaches. |
| Shower steam | A bathroom with a hot shower | You are traveling or lack an iron and dryer | Keep the garment clear of splashes; effectiveness can be limited on severe wrinkles or certain fabrics. |
| Light mist or wrinkle-release spray | Water in a fine-mist bottle or a commercial spray | You need a small touch-up and can hang the garment afterward | Fabric suitability varies; test sprays on a hidden area and follow product directions. |
| Handheld garment steamer | A garment steamer | You want a dedicated reusable tool and the care label permits steaming | Philips describes its steamer for ironable fabrics; do not assume every garment is suitable. |
There are no controlled head-to-head results in the cited manufacturer and government guidance that establish one method as best. Choose based on fabric care, available equipment, and the severity of the wrinkles.
Use sprays cautiously
Whirlpool advises checking care labels and testing a spray on a small, hidden part of the garment first to catch possible spotting. Apply only enough to make the fabric slightly damp, then smooth and hang it as directed. The same caution is sensible for a water mist, especially on a fabric or dye you have not tested.
