What a mattress pad does—and what it does not do
A mattress pad is a relatively thin, fitted-sheet-like layer that adds modest cushioning, changes the feel of a mattress slightly, and may protect against sweat or minor spills. It is usually secured with elastic corners or a fitted skirt.

Water resistance also varies. A pad with a documented waterproof inner layer can help protect the mattress from liquid, but many comfortable or cooling pads are not waterproof at all. Always check the construction rather than relying on words such as “protector,” “comfort,” or “cooling.”

How these 10 mattress pads were selected
Good Housekeeping reports evaluating more than 20 mattress pads through its Textiles Lab and consumer sleep testers, collecting 3,335 data points. Its criteria included comfort, mattress enhancement, setup and removal, sleeping temperature, stability, noise, construction, brand claims, cooling features, and organic certifications. Its current article, published March 19, 2026, names eight winners.
Sleep Foundation’s 2026 guide describes inspection and evaluation of dozens of mattress pads in its Test Lab, with attention to materials, design, features, and construction. The list below combines the eight Good Housekeeping winners with two additional Sleep Foundation picks. That means the products were not all evaluated by the same organization or under an identical protocol.
Prices and availability are intentionally omitted. Retailer prices can change substantially, and the two source guides displayed different prices at crawl time. Check the current product page, size, pocket depth, return terms, and stock before buying.

The biggest tradeoff is cushioning. Some testers wanted more thickness and padding, so this is better for refreshing a basically comfortable mattress than for correcting a hard or unsupportive one. Its unusually broad size selection—including Twin XL, Short Queen, and RV King—also makes it practical for nonstandard beds.

5. Parachute Down Mattress Pad: best down pad
Good Housekeeping testers described the Parachute Down Mattress Pad as cloud-like and plush. It uses 550-fill-power down inside a double-stitched cotton sateen shell designed to reduce feather leakage. The pad fits mattresses up to 18 inches.
The tradeoffs are cost and care preferences. It is not waterproof, and down is not appropriate for shoppers who avoid animal-derived fill or who know they are sensitive to down. 6. Avocado Organic Mattress Pad: best organic cotton
Good Housekeeping found the Avocado Organic Mattress Pad soft, quiet, and substantial without dramatically changing the feel of the mattress. Testers also reported that it stayed secure after repeated washing. The outer material and fill are both listed as 100% organic cotton.
There is no waterproof layer, and the recommended mattress height is up to 15 inches. At least one hot sleeper found it warmer than expected, so it is not the obvious choice for someone whose first priority is heat management. Organic cotton can be appealing for its natural-fiber feel, but it is still important to check the exact certification and care information attached to the current product.

1. Measure the entire mattress setup
Measure the mattress itself and any topper that will remain underneath the pad. The relevant figure is the total height, not just the mattress manufacturer’s advertised thickness. Compare that number with the pad’s stated pocket depth or maximum mattress height.
Deep-pocket capacity is a recurring difference among these products: the SlumberCloud, Wamsutta, and Cozy Earth models are listed for mattresses up to 20 inches, while Avocado is listed up to 15 inches and Sijo up to 16 inches. Those figures can vary by size, so check the exact listing. A pad that is too small may pop off or bunch; one that is too loose may shift.
2. Decide whether you need waterproofing
Choose a model with a documented waterproof inner layer if you are protecting against urine, drinks, sweat, or other liquid exposure. In this group, The Company Store, Sijo, Wamsutta, and Serta are the waterproof options identified by the research. SlumberCloud, Bedsure, Parachute, and Avocado are not waterproof.

3. Treat cooling as a system, not a guarantee
Cooling performance depends on the mattress, sheets, blankets, bedroom temperature, humidity, and sleeper. Moisture-wicking or temperature-regulating fibers may make the surface feel drier or less clammy, while waterproof barriers can change airflow and feel.
Among these picks, SlumberCloud emphasizes Outlast temperature regulation, Sijo combines CLIMA fibers with a waterproof layer, Wamsutta uses a lyocell outer material, and Cozy Earth uses bamboo-derived viscose and fiber fill. These features explain the products’ positioning; they do not guarantee the same result for every hot sleeper.
4. Match the fill to the feel you want
