The best free construction project management software depends on what you need to manage. Choose Fieldwire Basic for plan sheets and punch lists, OpenProject Community for a complete self-hosted project system, or Zoho Projects Free for a hosted Gantt schedule. For offline scheduling, ProjectLibre and GanttProject are the strongest options.
These are genuinely free editions—not short trials—reviewed against their current limits through August 2026. Free software can coordinate tasks and schedules, but most options do not replace paid construction platforms for RFIs, submittals, change orders, budgets, plan markup, or field reporting.

1. Fieldwire Basic: best free construction-specific option
Fieldwire Basic is the best free choice when your team works from drawings and needs to track field issues. It combines plan viewing, task management, and instant messaging in a construction-oriented interface.
The free account allows up to 5 users, 3 projects, and 100 plan sheets total. These are account-wide limits, not allowances that reset for every project. Fieldwire says Basic can be used indefinitely, so it is different from a time-limited trial.

Useful workflows include punch lists, inspections, QA/QC observations, safety issues, and tasks pinned directly to a drawing. To create a field task, open Plans, open a sheet, and select the pin icon on the markup toolbar. Use Tasks in the upper-left navigation bar to view My Tasks, All Tasks, or Watched Tasks. The Plans area also provides thumbnail and list views, filtering, collections, folders, and plan-upload history through Version Control.
The free plan does not include custom reports, custom forms, sheet comparison, 3D models, RFIs, submittals, change orders, or budgets. Custom task statuses also require a paid plan.

2. OpenProject Community: best free full project-management system
OpenProject Community is the most capable free option for teams that can host their own software. It is open-source, self-hosted, and available with unlimited users and projects. It is not the same as OpenProject’s hosted cloud service.
The Community edition includes work packages, work breakdown structures, Gantt charts, timelines, milestones, dashboards, basic boards, scheduling, documentation, and time tracking. That makes it suitable for a detailed construction schedule with phases such as procurement, earthwork, foundations, structure, MEP, finishes, inspections, and closeout.
To enable functions, open a project, select Project settings, choose Modules, and check the required module. Create work packages through Work packages → + Create, or use the green + button in the header. In the Gantt view, right-click a work package and choose Add predecessor or Add successor.

Scheduling has important behavior to understand. A follower cannot be moved before its predecessor, and moving a predecessor beyond the follower’s start date can push the follower forward. The Gantt chart displays predecessor/follower and parent/child relations, but not every relation type, such as “blocked by,” “duplicates,” or “related to.”
3. ClickUp Free Forever: best flexible task system
ClickUp Free Forever works well for a small contractor that wants to configure its own workflows for estimating, procurement, inspections, closeout, RFIs, or punch lists.
The free plan includes unlimited free-plan members and tasks, collaborative Docs, Kanban boards, calendar view, sprint management, basic custom fields, two-factor authentication, and one form. Its most important constraint is 60 MB of storage. Gantt charts, native time tracking, unlimited integrations, unlimited storage, and resource-management features are paid.
You can structure a workspace as project → phase → task → checklist, then use custom statuses for stages such as Not started, Ready, In progress, Waiting on material, Inspection required, and Complete. This is a configurable task system, not a construction platform: the free tier does not provide Fieldwire-style plan-sheet management or native construction modules.
4. Zoho Projects Free: best free cloud Gantt option
Zoho Projects Free is the strongest hosted choice when a small team needs a real Gantt view without installing software. The current free plan supports 5 users, 3 projects, and 5 GB of storage.
It includes subtasks, Gantt charts, project timelines, mobile apps, whiteboards, Google and Microsoft Office 365 integrations, and workflow actions limited to 50 executions per month. Free dependency support is limited to finish-to-start relationships within a project; other dependency types and cross-project dependencies require a paid plan.
Open a project’s Gantt view from Projects and the view-selection dropdown. You can also use Projects → Gantt → New Project. In a task Gantt chart, draw a connection between the ends of two task or subtask bars to create a dependency. Dependency behavior is configured through the settings icon → Portal Configuration → Task & Timesheet → Task Settings.

Only projects with both start and end dates appear in the Project Gantt view. Budgets and earned-value-style project controls are not free. Also note that some older Zoho help content says the free plan has two projects; the current pricing page lists three.
5. Trello Free: best simple visual workflow
Trello Free is a practical choice for small jobs, procurement follow-ups, subcontractor coordination, and punch lists where a visual board is more useful than a formal schedule.
The free plan includes up to 10 collaborators per Workspace, 10 boards per Workspace, unlimited cards, unlimited Power-Ups per board, 10 MB attachments, due dates, assigned members, mobile apps, and 250 automation runs per month.
A useful board might have lists for New, Assigned, In progress, Waiting for information, Ready for inspection, and Complete. Open Automation in the board header to use suggestions or create rules. For example:
when a card is moved into list "In progress", post comment "started on {date}"The 10-person limit applies to the entire Workspace, not each board. If the Workspace exceeds 10 collaborators, boards become view-only, new collaborators cannot be added, and automations stop running. The 250 automation runs are pooled across the Workspace and reset on the first day of each month at midnight GMT.
Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard, and Map views are not included in Free. Free Workspace members are also admins by default, so permission control is limited.
6. ProjectLibre Desktop: best traditional construction scheduler
ProjectLibre Desktop is the best free option for estimators, schedulers, and project managers who need a Microsoft Project-style schedule. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Its features include Gantt charts, network diagrams, WBS, resource management, earned-value management, cost tracking, baselines, critical-path scheduling, and Microsoft Project file compatibility. ProjectLibre identifies version 1.9.8, released April 28, 2025, as its current desktop release. The separate ProjectLibre Cloud product is subscription-based.

7. GanttProject: best lightweight offline Gantt scheduler
GanttProject is a free, open-source desktop scheduler for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The vendor currently displays release 3.3.3316. It requires no account or subscription and stores plans locally in .gan files.
It provides Gantt charts, task dependencies, milestones, resources, offline operation, and PDF or image export. It is a good fit for a small contractor who needs a straightforward schedule without cloud storage.
GanttProject is not field-management software. It has no native plan markup, punch-list collaboration, RFI, submittal, change-order, or jobsite messaging workflow. Because files are local, collaboration requires manually exchanging files or creating a separate shared-storage process; there is no native live multi-user workspace.

8. Freedcamp Free: best for unlimited basic collaboration
Freedcamp Free includes unlimited tasks, projects, and storage, with core applications for Tasks, Discussions, Calendar, Files, Milestones, Time, and Passwords. It can suit a small construction office that prioritizes basic collaboration over advanced scheduling.
The important file limitation is a 10 MB maximum per upload, despite the plan’s unlimited total storage. The current free plan excludes start dates, Gantt view, table view, custom fields, custom statuses, recurring tasks, multiple assignees, and advanced subtasks.

Older reviews often describe Gantt as free, but current pricing and help documentation place it on Business and Enterprise plans. Public projects can expose project content to search engines, so confidential drawings, contracts, and client documents should not be placed in a public project.
9. Asana Personal: best for a two-person operation
Asana Personal is suitable for an owner-builder, small general contractor, or two-person office managing tasks, deadlines, approvals, and lightweight project files.
The free plan supports 2 users, unlimited tasks and projects, list, board, and calendar views, status updates, mobile apps, more than 100 integrations, and unlimited file storage subject to a 100 MB maximum per file.
Timeline and Gantt views are paid, as are forms, custom fields, reporting dashboards, automations, and workload features. Asana has no native free plan-sheet, RFI, submittal, or change-order module. The commonly quoted older limit of 10 or 15 free users is outdated; the current Personal plan is limited to two users.
10. monday.com Free: best for a solo contractor or tiny office
monday.com Free is useful for a simple project register, bid follow-up list, procurement tracker, or task board. It supports 2 seats, 3 boards, up to 3 Docs, 200-plus templates, eight column types, and mobile apps.
Timeline and Gantt views are not included. Automations, integrations, calendar view, and guest access are also paid. A monday.com product article identifies a 1,000-item limit across the three free boards, which can become restrictive if you record daily logs, punch items, or procurement records as individual items.

What free construction software usually cannot do
Free tools are useful, but most have one or more important gaps:
- Native plan-sheet markup, sheet comparison, and revision workflows.
- RFIs, submittals, change orders, and construction budgets.
- Critical-path and baseline management in hosted task tools.
- Resource loading, cost tracking, and earned-value controls.
- Custom forms, field reports, and inspection templates.
- Large files without upload or storage limits.
- Granular permissions, audit controls, and portfolio reporting.
- Vendor-managed backups and support when the software is self-hosted or desktop-based.
OpenProject Community is the main free exception for broad scheduling and collaboration, but you must operate the server. ProjectLibre Desktop and GanttProject offer stronger traditional scheduling, but they are local applications rather than shared field platforms.
