The IQAir AirVisual Pro is the best general-purpose indoor air-quality monitor in this tested group. Its large, readable display shows PM2.5, carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, and outdoor comparison data without requiring you to open an app. But the right monitor depends on what you need to measure: PurpleAir is stronger for localized outdoor particulate data, Airthings is the choice for radon, and less expensive models can be useful for basic trend tracking.

Air-quality monitors are most valuable when they answer a specific question: Is cooking sending particulate levels sharply upward? Is a bedroom poorly ventilated? Is wildfire smoke entering the house? Is an air purifier reducing PM2.5? They are not laboratory instruments, and a green light or proprietary score is not a medical or regulatory determination. Use the readings to identify patterns, compare rooms and events, and decide when ventilation or filtration needs attention.

The 10 best air-quality monitors

1. IQAir AirVisual Pro Indoor Monitor: best overall

What it measures: PM2.5, CO2, temperature, and humidity. Its five-inch LCD also presents indoor and outdoor data.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor, Detects temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, PM2.5 and VOCs, Get notifications when air quality drops, Works with Alexa
  • Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
  • Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
  • Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
  • Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
  • Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.

The AirVisual Pro is the easiest recommendation for a household that wants an immediately understandable reading. The large screen is visible across a room, so family members can check conditions without a phone, account, or web portal. That is particularly useful during wildfire smoke, cooking, or other short-lived particulate events.

It can also help compare indoor readings with outdoor conditions supplied through IQAir’s network. That external outdoor reading is useful context, but it is not the same as measuring the air immediately outside your home. The cited testing also found that app data could be stored for a year.

Buy it if: You want a premium indoor monitor with a strong display, PM2.5 and CO2 readings, and outdoor comparison data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: You need dedicated local outdoor measurement, radon detection, or a less expensive device.

See the AirVisual Pro at IQAir.

2. PurpleAir Zen: best indoor/outdoor option

What it measures: PM2.5, with a color indicator based on the U.S. AQI scale.

The PurpleAir Zen is unusually flexible: it can be used indoors or outdoors, placed on its stand, or pole- or wall-mounted. It connects to the PurpleAir map, giving you access to crowdsourced particulate readings from nearby monitors. The cited testing found it remained operational through hot, humid conditions and nights reaching 0°F.

The trade-off is a less conventional software experience. It does not use a typical dedicated app, and configuring the map can be awkward. The device is also focused on particulate matter rather than CO2, VOCs, or radon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: You want PM2.5 data from your property and access to a broader local sensor network.

Skip it if: You want broad indoor sensing or a polished phone app.

See the PurpleAir Zen.

3. IQAir Outdoor Air Quality Monitor: best mounted outdoor monitor

What it measures: PM2.5, CO2, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure.

This is the better IQAir choice when the question is specifically what is happening outdoors at your home, rather than what a nearby network station reports. It integrates with an IQAir indoor display and can provide useful context for wildfire smoke, neighborhood pollution, and decisions about opening windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation is the important caveat. The monitor is designed to be mounted rather than placed on a windowsill, and its power adapter must be protected from rain and snow. It also needs suitable airflow. In the cited testing, IQAir rejected one attempted outdoor-data submission because the installation did not provide adequate airflow.

Buy it if: You own or control a suitable mounting location and protected outdoor power.

Skip it if: You rent, cannot mount equipment, or need a portable monitor.

See the IQAir Outdoor Monitor.

4. Airthings View Plus: best for radon

What it measures: Radon, PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, temperature, humidity, and air pressure.

The View Plus is the obvious choice in this group for readers who specifically need radon monitoring. A general-purpose PM2.5 or VOC monitor cannot detect radon, so extra sensor breadth elsewhere does not compensate for its absence.

It also covers the main readings useful for general indoor monitoring. However, it requires Wi-Fi and internet access for normal use according to the cited testing, and some CO2 and VOC readings can take days to calibrate. Radon should be interpreted over the device’s recommended testing period, not from a first-day fluctuation.

Buy it if: Radon is a priority and you can provide reliable Wi-Fi.

Skip it if: You need offline operation, immediate setup, or have no reason to monitor radon.

5. PurpleAir Touch: best simple PM2.5 display

What it measures: PM2.5.

The Touch is designed around a simple visual signal: a color-changing light ring indicates AQI categories. That makes it useful for quickly checking conditions during wildfire smoke or other particulate events without studying several metrics.

Detailed readings are accessed through PurpleAir’s web interface and map rather than a conventional mobile app. It does not measure CO2, VOCs, or radon, so it is a focused tool rather than a complete indoor monitor.

Buy it if: You want a straightforward PM2.5 warning display.

Skip it if: You need ventilation, gas, or radon information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See the PurpleAir Touch.

6. Govee Smart Air Quality Monitor: best budget option

What it measures: PM2.5, temperature, and humidity.

Govee provides an inexpensive entry point for users who want to observe basic particulate trends and connect the monitor to an app. It can also work with Govee air purifiers.

In the cited testing, it was less sensitive than more expensive monitors, although it still responded to cooking and toaster events. That makes it better suited to broad before-and-after comparisons than to treating every displayed number as precise. It does not measure CO2, VOCs, or radon and is not an outdoor monitor.

Buy it if: You want low-cost PM2.5 trend tracking.

Skip it if: You need maximum sensitivity, radon, outdoor deployment, or professional-level measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Govee’s air-quality monitors.

7. IKEA Vindstyrka: best inexpensive PM2.5/VOC monitor

What it measures: PM2.5, a VOC trend, temperature, and humidity.

Vindstyrka makes sense for homes already using IKEA’s smart-home products. It can work with IKEA’s Starkvind purifier and, for full smart-home integration, the Dirigera hub. The monitor adds a broad VOC trend to its particulate reading, which is useful when comparing cleaning, furnishing, fragrance, or other indoor activities.

The display is small and difficult to read from a distance. Its VOC reading is a trend, not an identification of a particular compound, and the device is not a radon monitor.

8. Awair Element: best composite indoor-air score

What it measures: PM2.5, VOCs, CO2, temperature, and humidity.

Awair Element combines several readings into a proprietary score from 1 to 100. That can be approachable for someone who wants a single dashboard rather than a collection of numbers.

Its central weakness is also that composite score: it can be counterintuitive when one measurement worsens the result. The cited testing found that high humidity could make the score and indicator light suggest poorer air even when PM2.5 was low. The VOC sensor also does not identify individual chemicals. For diagnosis, inspect the underlying measurements rather than relying only on the score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: You prefer a broad dashboard and understand that its score is not the EPA AQI.

Skip it if: You want raw readings with minimal algorithmic interpretation.

9. Qingping Air Monitor (QP Pro): best desk monitor

What it measures: PM2.5, VOCs, CO2, temperature, and humidity.

The Qingping QP Pro packs a useful range of readings into a compact desk or bedside device. Its touchscreen is convenient at close range, and the cited testing found approximately four hours of battery backup.

Its small display is not intended to be read from across a room. Battery backup is also better understood as a temporary convenience than as long-term portable operation.

Buy it if: You want many measurements in a compact office, desk, or bedside monitor.

Skip it if: You need a room-scale display, long battery life, or outdoor use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Qingping Lite is the most practical option here for hotel rooms, rentals, cabins, and temporary room-to-room comparisons. It has an OLED display and battery operation; the cited testing measured approximately 6.5 hours of battery life.

It does not measure VOCs, and its battery life is not suitable for unattended continuous monitoring over several days. Like the other consumer models, it is most useful for identifying changes and patterns rather than establishing laboratory-grade absolute values.

Choose by the pollutant you actually need to measure

For wildfire smoke: prioritize PM2.5

PM2.5 is the key reading for smoke from wildfires, cooking, candles, fireplaces, and other combustion sources. A useful smoke monitor should show the number clearly, respond when conditions change, and ideally provide outdoor context.

The AirVisual Pro is the strongest indoor choice because of its large display and indoor/outdoor comparison. PurpleAir Zen or the IQAir Outdoor Monitor make more sense when you need localized outdoor measurement. PurpleAir Touch is a simpler visual-only option.

For cooking and gas-stove emissions: watch changes in PM2.5

Cooking produced the worst air readings in the cited testing environments, which included a gas stove in a Brooklyn apartment and an electric stove in a Maine cabin. Those conditions are not universal, but they illustrate how useful a monitor can be for testing a kitchen strategy.

Place the monitor in the room’s breathing zone, then observe what happens when frying, searing, broiling, or using a toaster. Compare readings with the range hood running, windows open or closed, and an air purifier operating. A monitor shows measured changes; it does not prove that a gas stove is safe or unsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ventilation: choose CO2

CO2 is primarily a ventilation indicator. A rising reading in an occupied room generally means outdoor-air exchange is inadequate for the current occupancy and conditions. It does not prove that PM2.5, VOCs, or radon are elevated.

Good choices include Airthings View Plus, IQAir AirVisual Pro, Qingping Air Monitor, Qingping Lite, and Awair Element.

For VOCs: interpret trends, not chemical identities

Consumer VOC sensors usually respond to a broad mixture of gases. They may help reveal changes after painting, cleaning, furnishing, applying adhesives, or using fragrances, but they generally cannot tell you whether the gas is formaldehyde, benzene, or another specific compound.

For radon: buy a radon-capable device

Among these products, Airthings View Plus is the relevant choice because it includes a dedicated radon sensor. A monitor that measures PM2.5, VOCs, or “air quality” without a radon sensor cannot detect radon. Follow the device’s placement and testing protocol and local public-health guidance; do not make major decisions from an early reading.

Indoor versus outdoor placement

Indoor placement

For a representative room reading, place the monitor about 3 to 6 feet above the floor, roughly in the breathing zone. Keep it away from direct drafts, HVAC vents, windows, bathrooms, obstructed corners, and the immediate plume from a stove, candle, spray, or air freshener.

When diagnosing a source, temporarily place the monitor near—but not directly beside—the activity. Afterward, return it to a representative location. A device next to a cooking surface measures the source, not the room as a whole.

Outdoor placement

Outdoor monitors need free airflow, appropriate mounting, correct orientation, weather-suitable power, and protection from direct obstruction. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than improvising a windowsill installation.

The IQAir Outdoor Monitor is designed for mounting and requires its power adapter to be protected from rain and snow. A dedicated outdoor sensor also measures local conditions more directly than an indoor monitor displaying data from a nearby external station.

  • App-based monitoring: Apps are better for notifications, historical trends, remote checks, multiple rooms, and sometimes data export.
  • Web-map access: PurpleAir products expose detailed readings through the PurpleAir map and web interface, which is different from having a conventional dedicated app.
  • Internet dependence: The cited testing reports that Airthings View Plus requires Wi-Fi and internet. That may rule it out for cabins, second homes, unreliable connections, or users who want local-only operation.

Before buying, check whether the device requires an account, stores data in the cloud, needs a hub, supports offline display, or participates in a public map. Cloud history and remote access can be useful, but they are not automatically benefits for every household.

How accurate are consumer air-quality monitors?

Use these products primarily for trend detection and relative comparison: comparing a room before and after cooking, checking whether smoke entered the house, or seeing whether an air purifier reduced PM2.5.

Two monitors may disagree because of sensor design, calibration, placement, airflow, humidity, averaging periods, sensor age, or different AQI algorithms. A low-cost sensor may also be less sensitive. The cited testing notes that consumer devices can be useful while remaining less accurate and less readily calibrated than professional equipment, particularly at lower price points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If two devices disagree, place them together temporarily under the same conditions and compare their response over time. Check for blocked inlets, dust buildup, unusual placement, and delayed or smoothed displays. For a specific health, regulatory, or building investigation, use appropriate professional or certified testing instead of treating a consumer display as definitive.

How to respond when readings are poor

If PM2.5 rises

  1. Stop or reduce the suspected source.
  2. Use a kitchen hood that exhausts outdoors, if available.
  3. Run a suitably sized air purifier.
  4. Close windows when outdoor air is worse; open them only when outdoor conditions support ventilation.
  5. Check the reading again after the source stops.
  6. Inspect the monitor for obstruction, contamination, or poor placement.

If CO2 rises

  1. Increase outdoor-air ventilation when outdoor conditions permit.
  2. Open a window or use mechanical ventilation.
  3. Reduce occupancy or move to a better-ventilated room.
  4. Recheck after several minutes.

If VOC readings rise

Consider recent cleaning, painting, furniture, adhesives, fragrances, or sprays. Ventilate if outdoor air is suitable and isolate the suspected source. Do not assume the reading identifies a particular chemical.

If radon appears elevated

Follow the monitor’s testing protocol and seek qualified local guidance. Short-term fluctuations are not a diagnosis, and a general air-quality score cannot replace radon-specific testing.

How we evaluated these monitors

The cited editorial testing used a more-than-130-year-old Brooklyn apartment and a cabin in Maine. The environments included a gas stove, an electric stove, two people, two cats, a dog, and air purifiers. Neither location had central air or an HVAC system with MERV filters, and neither stove had an over-range exhaust fan venting fumes outdoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cooking produced the most significant pollution readings in those environments. The comparisons considered the measurements offered, display readability, app and account requirements, Wi-Fi dependence, data history, battery operation, indoor/outdoor suitability, installation, response to cooking and smoke events, and calibration behavior. This was editorial product testing, not a universal laboratory certification of every device.

What an air-quality monitor cannot replace

Official local AQI services such as AirNow can provide outdoor conditions, but they do not measure the air inside your home. An air purifier can reduce particulate levels, but its built-in sensor should not automatically be treated as equivalent to an independent monitor. Radon concerns may require a dedicated test or qualified testing service. Ventilation, source control, filtration, and professional investigation remain the remedies; a monitor tells you whether conditions appear to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are air-quality monitors worth it?

They are worthwhile when you have a specific question—such as whether cooking raises PM2.5, whether ventilation is adequate, or whether an air purifier changes readings. They are less useful when treated as laboratory or medical instruments.

Can an air-quality monitor detect mold?

These monitors do not directly identify mold. Humidity and particulate changes may provide context, but suspected mold requires inspection and, when appropriate, qualified testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an air-quality monitor detect carbon monoxide?

The models covered here are not presented as carbon-monoxide alarms. Use dedicated, code-compliant carbon-monoxide alarms for that hazard.

Should a monitor stay on all the time?

Continuous operation is useful for trends and intermittent events, provided the device is designed for it and remains correctly placed. Battery models may be better for temporary comparisons.

Can a monitor tell me whether my air purifier works?

Yes, it can help compare PM2.5 before and after the purifier runs. Keep the monitor away from the purifier’s immediate exhaust stream and compare repeated events under similar conditions.
