The setup and fit differ for each joint, so check your saw and blade manuals before installing or using a dado set. The techniques below are summarized from WOOD Magazine’s “1 Dado Set, 4 Easy Joints,” updated December 18, 2024.
What you need to know before making these joints
A stacked dado set is made from outer blades and intermediate chippers or spacers, with shims used on some sets to adjust the cutting width. It is not automatically compatible with every table saw. Before buying or installing one, confirm the saw manufacturer permits dado cutting and check the supported blade diameter, arbor, maximum stack width, saw power requirements, and throat plate or insert clearance. Follow the instructions for your exact saw and blade set for installation, guarding, workpiece support, and operation.
As a product example—not a universal fit recommendation—the DEWALT DW7670 is listed as an 8-inch, 24-tooth set with two outer blades, three chippers, three spacers, and seven shims. DEWALT states that it adjusts to groove widths from 1/4 inch to 7/8 inch. Check its specifications against your saw before considering it: DEWALT 8-Inch 24T Dado Blade Set.
WOOD Magazine’s December 18, 2024 update gave a price range of $80 to $270 for a good stacked dado set. That is the article’s dated figure, not a current price estimate.

1. Cut a dado or groove
A dado is a channel cut across the grain; a groove runs with the grain. Both can receive another board or panel. Their side walls also add glue surface to a butt joint, according to WOOD Magazine.
Set the stack to the width required by the mating piece and make a test cut in scrap of the same thickness. Check both width and depth against the actual fit you need before cutting project parts. Use the saw and dado-set manuals for the safe setup and operating details; the cited article does not replace model-specific instructions.

- Carbide tooth blades and chippers feature negative hook angles to make flat bottom grooves that are smooth and virtually splinter-free
2. Cut a rabbet
A rabbet is a partial channel cut along an edge or end. It can let a cabinet top, bottom, or back attach flush to the adjoining piece.
WOOD Magazine describes using an auxiliary fence for the cut and adjusting the fence to refine the rabbet’s width. Make a test cut in scrap, then check that the resulting shoulder and recess suit the mating part before cutting the finished workpiece.

3. Make a tongue-and-groove joint
In a tongue-and-groove joint, a centered tongue on one board fits into a groove in the other. The article describes a tongue about one-third the board thickness; the fitted joint helps align boards and creates a mechanical connection. Treat that proportion as a starting point, then test the actual fit with your stock.
Cut and refine the groove
To center a groove, WOOD Magazine’s method is to cut from one face, rotate the stock 180 degrees, and cut again from the opposite face. The paired cuts form a centered groove. Make a test piece first and verify that the groove is centered and sized for the intended tongue.

Form the tongue
Cut the tongue slightly oversize, test it in the groove, and refine it until the fit is suitable. Fence adjustments affect both faces of the tongue, so check the result after each change rather than assuming a setting alters only one side.
4. Cut a half-lap
A half-lap joint is made by removing part of each of two overlapping pieces so they can meet in a lap. The target is to remove about half the thickness from each piece, leaving the joined surfaces approximately flush.

WOOD Magazine advises setting the cut slightly shallower than half the stock thickness, cutting the mating pieces, checking the fit, and refining as needed. Make test cuts in matching scrap. Changes to depth or fence position can affect both mating sides, so verify the fit again after an adjustment.
Use test cuts to protect the fit
For all four joints, establish the final width and depth on scrap before cutting project parts. Stock thickness, the intended mating piece, and the saw’s setup determine the dimensions that will work; the cited article provides techniques, not universal settings. Use the instructions supplied with your saw and dado set for all machine-specific setup and safety requirements.
