The project team treated the lift as part of the interior architecture: a glass cab, glass doors, glass hoistway, raw-steel framing and a coordinated operating panel allow the access route to read as a deliberate design feature rather than a back-of-house addition.
The account comes from Building Design + Construction’s sponsored case study published March 10, 2026. It identifies GKV Architects as the renovation and adaptive-reuse architect and Mobility Elevator & Lift as the Savaria dealer that installed the elevator. Product capacities, dimensions and compliance statements below are attributed to that case study and should be verified against current manufacturer data and the project’s own code review.
The accessibility problem in a two-story restaurant
Zuma occupied a former office and retail property in Manhattan’s Garment District. GKV Architects led an adaptive-reuse renovation in which all three floors, including the basement, were fully gutted to make room for restaurant infrastructure. The result is described as a 24,000-square-foot, two-story dining room containing private rooms, bar lounges, private dining rooms and custom finishes.

That arrangement creates a practical access question: how can a guest using a wheelchair reach tables on the second floor without being diverted through a service area or confronted with equipment that conflicts with an upscale dining environment? The case study’s answer was a dedicated LU/LA elevator placed in a visible, guest-facing location. The installation connects the dining levels while allowing the restaurant to keep its visual language intact.
Because the source is a sponsored project account rather than an independent accessibility audit, it documents the design intent and reported product details, not a comparative test of elevator types or a universal solution for every existing building.
What elevator Zuma selected
Model and installer
The case identifies the equipment as a Savaria Orion LU/LA elevator. Mobility Elevator & Lift, a Savaria dealer, installed it. The article describes the elevator as wheelchair accessible and says it serves diners traveling to second-floor tables.

“LU/LA” means the project used a limited-use/limited-application elevator category. The designation is important for a renovation because the system is being selected for a defined circulation need rather than as a generic passenger lift. The exact permitted use, travel, dimensions and safeguards still depend on the adopted code, the authority having jurisdiction and the approved design.

Location within the dining experience
The elevator sits beside Zuma’s wine display. That placement makes the vertical route easy for guests and staff to identify while tying it to a prominent hospitality feature. It also means the cab, doors and hoistway are seen by diners, so exposed equipment could not be treated as an afterthought. The design response was to make the elevator’s finishes part of the restaurant’s composition.
How the elevator was made to look custom
Transparent cab and hoistway
The reported customization includes a glass cab, glass doors and a glass hoistway. Transparency keeps sightlines open around the wine display and lets the elevator occupy a relatively compact visual footprint. It also gives the lift a showroom quality that suits a restaurant where guests encounter the vertical circulation in public space.
Mike Dolan, director of project management at Mobility Elevator & Lift, described the installation this way: “This project was really special because of how upscale absolutely everything had to be.” In the same sponsored case study, he called it “a custom glass cab, with glass doors, in a custom glass hoistway.” Those are vendor-side observations about this project, not an independent assessment of the product.
Structural and control details
The case study reports a raw-steel frame and operating panel. The two-story configuration uses straight-through entry and exit, a full-length operating panel and square buttons. Pedestal call stations are positioned outside the car. Together, these details show that customization extended beyond decorative glazing: the frame, user interface and landing controls were specified to fit the architecture.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
A full-length panel can be coordinated with the cab’s proportions instead of appearing as a small, unrelated fixture. Square buttons and pedestal stations likewise give the access equipment a consistent visual vocabulary. The project team would still need to verify button placement, tactile information, illumination, clearances and other accessibility details in the approved drawings.
Entry and exit flexibility
The case says the Orion can be configured for same-side, straight-through or 90-degree entry and exit. Zuma used straight-through movement, which allows a passenger to enter at one side and leave at the opposite side without turning the wheelchair inside the car. A different floor plan might require same-side or 90-degree circulation; the appropriate arrangement should be chosen from the actual corridor, landing and table layout rather than assumed from the product name.
“It’s a very urban elevator. Very New York. And very chic. It came out just perfect for the Zuma environment.”

A practical workflow for an adaptive-reuse project
Zuma’s installation illustrates a sequence that other restaurant and hospitality teams can use when evaluating a second-floor access route. The steps below are planning guidance, not a claim that every item was performed exactly this way at Zuma.
- Map the guest route first. Draw the accessible path from the public entrance to every level, dining room, restroom and private room that guests are expected to use. Identify where a lift can be visible and convenient without narrowing queues, bar circulation or egress paths.
- Survey the existing structure. Record floor-to-floor heights, available overhead, possible pit locations, slab thickness, foundations, utilities and fire-rated separations. In an adaptive reuse, the existing building may not match the dimensions of a new-build product assumption. The 134-inch overhead and 17-inch pit figures reported for the Orion should therefore be checked against current site measurements, not copied into a permit set.
- Choose the landing arrangement. Decide whether guests need same-side, straight-through or 90-degree entry and exit at each level. Straight-through travel can simplify wheelchair movement, as at Zuma, but it may require openings on opposite sides of the hoistway and enough landing space for both approaches.
- Coordinate the elevator with the interior concept. Select glazing, frame finish, door treatment, panel proportions and call-station locations while the interior designer is still developing the room. A visible elevator should align with adjacent displays, lighting and circulation. Zuma’s glass cab and hoistway show how the access element can be made intentionally prominent.
- Resolve structure and building services. Coordinate the pit, overhead, supports, electrical service, fire protection, ventilation and any required rated construction with the architect, structural engineer and elevator contractor. Machine-roomless equipment can reduce the need for a separate machine room, but it does not eliminate the need to verify every building interface.
- Design the user interface as part of the cab. Confirm operating-panel reach, button identification, call-station visibility, door operation and signage in the shop drawings. The reported full-length panel and square buttons were aesthetic choices as well as functional components; accessibility review should determine their final location and details.
- Complete the code and permit review. Establish which accessibility, elevator, building, fire and local requirements apply in the project’s jurisdiction and edition. Obtain the authority having jurisdiction’s approvals and schedule required inspections. A product description alone cannot establish compliance for a particular installation.
- Plan operation before opening. Decide who responds if the elevator is out of service, how staff communicate an alternate accessible route, how doors and finishes are protected during service, and how preventive maintenance is scheduled. A guest-facing lift needs an operating plan as well as an attractive enclosure.
What the ADA statement does—and does not—establish
The case study states that the Orion complies with ADA requirements. That is an attributed product claim. It does not identify the applicable ADA edition, list the project’s approved dimensions, provide inspection records or show an independent compliance review.
For a real project, the architect and accessibility consultant should review the complete path of travel, not only the elevator. That review should include approaches and landings, door clearances, controls, notification features, signage, lighting, finishes and the relationship to dining tables and public amenities. The elevator contractor’s data should be reconciled with the adopted elevator and building codes, local amendments, permit drawings and field inspection results. Teams should not treat the case-study statement as a substitute for those approvals.
Design lessons for high-end hospitality
Make access visible without making it feel separate
Placing the lift next to the wine display turns an access requirement into a legible part of the arrival and dining sequence. Guests can find it without staff escort, while the glass construction keeps the route visually connected to the room. The lesson is not that every restaurant needs a glass elevator; it is that the accessible route should be located and detailed with the same care as the bar, stair or host stand.

Specify the whole assembly
Cab finishes alone do not create a coherent result. Zuma’s reported package includes the cab, doors, hoistway, raw-steel frame, operating panel and pedestal call stations. Treating those pieces as one design assembly reduces the risk that a polished interior will be interrupted by generic controls or an unfinished shaft.
Let circulation drive the configuration
The Orion’s reported ability to use three entry-and-exit arrangements gives a design team options, but flexibility is useful only when tied to actual movement. Furniture plans, queueing, service routes and emergency circulation should be tested around each landing before the final configuration is selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capacity, maintenance and operating reality
The case study reports that the elevator can provide up to 200 trips a day. That figure can help a team think about expected demand, but it is not a promise that a particular restaurant will move that many passengers without delay. Actual performance will depend on trip length, door dwell time, loading patterns, staff use, maintenance status and the final equipment specification.
Because Zuma’s lift is in a public dining area, maintenance planning must protect both availability and appearance. Specify who holds service responsibility, how outages are communicated, where technicians work, and how glass, steel and controls are cleaned or protected. Include a contingency for guests who need the second floor if the elevator is temporarily unavailable, subject to the approved accessibility plan and applicable law.

Where this approach fits—and where verification is essential
A custom LU/LA elevator can be a strong fit when an adaptive-reuse project needs a direct connection to an upper dining level and wants the equipment integrated into a premium interior. The Zuma example is especially relevant to urban renovations with limited room for conventional elevator architecture and a strong emphasis on visible finishes.
It should not be copied by dimension alone. Existing slabs, foundations, ceiling heights, utilities, fire separations, landing geometry, operating demand and local approvals can change the feasible solution. The case study does not compare the Orion with other elevator categories or vendors, so selecting an alternative requires a separate technical and code evaluation.

Zuma New York’s solution demonstrates that accessibility and a high-design hospitality interior can be planned as one architectural problem. The useful takeaway is the integration strategy: select the right vertical-transport category for the site, verify every dimension and code requirement, and design the cab, hoistway and controls with the same precision as the rest of the dining room.
