When large steel sections are delayed, Zekelman Industries is promoting other steel products and construction methods for data centers, including hollow structural sections (HSS), pipe piling, electrical conduit and factory-built modules. These options serve different engineering roles; none is a universal substitute for a delayed structural section. The campaign’s potential benefits are company and executive claims, not independently verified project results.
What Zekelman is promoting
In an October 8, 2026 report, Engineering News-Record (ENR) reported that Zekelman launched a nationwide marketing campaign focused on steel forms for mission-critical projects, including data centers, semiconductor fabs, life-sciences complexes and pharmaceutical facilities. The company’s data-center page lists several products and methods, while its September 9, 2026 campaign announcement describes a broader package of structural steel, electrical raceways, mechanical piping, engineering support, skid fabrication and nationwide distribution.

The phrase “alternatives to large steel forms on back order” describes the campaign’s supply-chain context, not a claim that every product below can replace a large beam or column. Selection depends on the component’s job, the project design and applicable requirements.

The descriptions in the table reflect Zekelman’s data-center product information; they are not independent performance findings. HSS may be considered as a structural option when a specified large section is delayed, but an engineer must determine whether a particular member can perform the required function. Pipe piling addresses foundations, while conduit and mechanical piping serve other systems.

How prefabrication fits into the pitch
Zekelman promotes factory prefabrication as another way to approach mission-critical construction. Its data-center page says modular units can be outfitted to be “95%+ complete” before leaving the factory. That is a company claim, not an independently measured completion rate for data-center projects.
ENR quoted Jim Marsh, Zekelman’s executive director for digital and mission-critical infrastructure, saying prefabrication can reduce field labor and improve efficiency, quality control and documentation. He also said, “The smartest thing that can happen from a process standpoint [is prefabrication],” expressing his view of the process rather than reporting independently verified project outcomes. Whether factory work helps a particular job depends on its design, logistics and site integration.

What the supply-chain claim does—and does not—show
Marsh told ENR: “The relationship with the supply chain being as stressed as it is, the demand being five times what it was two years ago for everything there have to be new ways of looking at sourcing,” The “five times” figure is his description of demand, not an independently established industry statistic: ENR’s report does not define a measured market, dataset or calculation behind it.

How to assess an alternative on a live project
Treat a proposed alternative as a project-specific procurement and engineering decision, not a simple material swap. Before changing a specification or construction method, the project team should:
- Define the function. Identify whether the delay concerns structural framing, foundation support, electrical raceways, mechanical piping or another system.
- Obtain engineering review. Have the responsible design professionals confirm that the proposed product or assembly meets design loads, connections, code requirements and other project criteria.
- Confirm actual supply. Ask for product specifications, quantities, lead times and delivery commitments for the project’s location and schedule; a nationwide campaign alone does not establish stock or timing.
- Check prefabrication logistics. Evaluate what work can be completed off-site, how assemblies will be transported and lifted, and how they will connect with site-built systems.
- Compare project-specific impacts. Assess total cost, schedule, site labor, quality controls and documentation on a consistent basis. The cited materials do not supply a comparative ranking for these factors.
The practical takeaway is that HSS, pipe piling, conduit, piping and modular construction may broaden the options a project team investigates during supply constraints, but their uses differ. Suitability, availability and any claimed savings must be established for the specific project.
