Preparatory work for the future Yuma Arizona Temple is expected to begin soon after City of Yuma approvals. The work will include grading and installing underground water, sewer and electrical connections. It is not the temple’s formal construction groundbreaking: as of the Church’s October 5, 2026 announcement, no groundbreaking date or construction timeline had been announced.
What work is starting at the Yuma temple site?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says initial site preparation will follow approvals from the City of Yuma. The announced work includes grading and underground connections for water, sewer and electrical service to existing city systems. The Church describes this as preliminary utility and infrastructure work, not the start of the temple’s formal construction phase. Church Newsroom, October 5, 2026
Has the temple’s groundbreaking date been announced?
No. In its October 5, 2026 release, the Church said design work continues and that it had not announced a date for the official groundbreaking ceremony. It also said it would provide further details on groundbreaking, construction timelines and future milestones when available. The release does not establish when construction will begin or when the temple will be completed.
Where is the temple site, and what is planned?
The nearly seven-acre site is at the corner of East 36th Street and South 8 East Avenue in Yuma, Arizona. Current plans call for a single-story temple of around 18,500 square feet and an accompanying ancillary building. These are plans, not final construction specifications, because design work remains underway. Church Newsroom and Church News

When was the Yuma Arizona Temple announced?
President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple on April 7, 2024, during the Sunday afternoon session of general conference. At that time, Church News reported approximately 442,000 Latter-day Saints in Arizona across 924 congregations. The Church’s October 2026 release gives a later figure: nearly 450,000 members across more than 900 congregations. These are figures from separate publications and dates, not a like-for-like project update. Church News; Church Newsroom

What the temple could mean for the region
In 2024, Church News said the nearest temple to Yuma was the San Diego California Temple, about 150 miles away, and that it was then closed for renovations. The report said many Yuma members were attending the Phoenix Arizona Temple, a similar distance away. That is historical context from the announcement period, not current travel guidance. Yuma Church member Jennifer Wilhelm told Church News, “This will bless the Saints in the whole region.” Church News
