To get rid of fruit flies before Thanksgiving, remove whatever is breeding them, then trap the adults. Overripe produce is only one possibility: wet, fermenting residue in drains, disposals, garbage, recycling, spills, mops and towels can sustain an infestation. University of Maryland Extension says the primary control is sanitation, and a fruit fly can complete its life cycle in about 8–10 days under favorable conditions.
Start with a 15–30-minute source hunt
Do this before relying on a trap. Work methodically so a hidden leak or damp residue does not keep producing new adults.
- Remove produce. Discard overripe, bruised or leaking fruit and vegetables. Refrigerate sound produce, including items sitting in a fruit bowl.
- Check storage areas. Inspect crisper drawers, pantry corners, under and behind appliances, and any leaking bag of potatoes or onions.
- Clean waste containers. Empty the garbage, then wash and dry the can and lid. Rinse bottles and cans before putting them in recycling; inspect the recycling bin for beer, wine, juice or soda residue.
- Wipe hidden spills. Clean sweet, alcoholic or fermented spills on floors, counters and cabinet edges, including under appliances.
- Dry textiles. Hang damp dish towels and wring out mop heads. Do not leave wet cleaning materials in a warm corner.
Fruit flies breed in moist organic material, so a clean-looking counter does not rule out a source elsewhere in the room.
Check the sink, drain and disposal
Fruit flies may appear to come from a sink even when no fruit is nearby. Food film and organic residue inside a drain or disposal can provide the moisture and fermentation they need.

- Clean the disposal and drain using a method suitable for your fixture and the product label. Never mix cleaning chemicals.
- Remove and clean the splash guard if your disposal has one; residue can collect beneath it.
- After cleaning, dry the surrounding sink, strainer and counter.
- To test the drain, cover the opening overnight with a clear food-storage bag or another transparent barrier. Check it the next morning for adults collected beneath the covering. This can indicate emergence from the drain, although it does not identify every possible source.
If flies continue after sanitation and drain checks, a licensed pest professional can investigate inaccessible breeding material or plumbing and building problems.
Set an apple-cider-vinegar trap while you clean
An apple-cider-vinegar trap can reduce adult flies, but it does not eliminate eggs or larvae in the breeding site.

- Pour apple cider vinegar into a small glass.
- Add one or two drops of dish soap. The soap breaks the liquid’s surface tension, making it harder for flies to escape.
- Stretch plastic wrap tightly over the glass.
- Poke several small entry holes in the wrap.
- Place the trap near the sink, fruit bowl, recycling or garbage area, but away from food and food-preparation surfaces. Refresh it when it becomes full, diluted or dirty.
A ready-to-use commercial vinegar fruit-fly trap is a tidier alternative for a visible kitchen. Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry guidance describes Bio-Logic Natural Catch Plus as a commercial, nontoxic, pesticide-free vinegar trap and reports a 70–80% or greater reduction for that named product; treat that as the guidance’s product claim, not a guarantee for every kitchen.

Tonight
- Remove leaking or overripe produce and refrigerate what is sound.
- Wash and dry the garbage can.
- Rinse recyclables and clean the recycling container.
- Wipe spills beneath and behind appliances.
- Dry towels and mop heads.
- Clean the disposal and drain, then set one or more vinegar traps.
Before guests arrive
- Keep produce covered or refrigerated.
- Keep garbage lidded and dry, and take it out before the meal.
- Empty trap contents and wipe preparation surfaces.
- Keep traps and any pesticide products away from food, children and pets.
Food and pet safety
Do not place traps on preparation surfaces or where they could spill into food. If you use a pesticide, read and follow every label, including directions for food-contact areas and ventilation. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension warns that some baits can be toxic to pets or livestock, so keep products inaccessible and use only products labeled for the intended indoor location.

When the flies do not stop
Seeing a few adults immediately after cleaning does not prove the treatment failed; adults already present can continue to emerge. Persistent activity after you have removed produce, cleaned waste areas and checked the drain suggests a missed or inaccessible breeding site. Arrange a licensed pest-control inspection if the problem continues, especially when flies seem tied to a drain, disposal, wall void, cabinet leak or other plumbing/building issue.

Will an apple-cider-vinegar trap get rid of fruit flies?
It traps adult flies and can quickly reduce what you see, but sanitation is essential because eggs and larvae remain in the breeding material.
