1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes, the HomePod mini really can measure temperature and humidity. But it is not a new August 2026 feature: Apple enabled the dormant sensor with HomePod Software 16.3 in January 2023. Apple’s current documentation supports temperature and humidity sensing on the HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) running HomePod software 26 or later.
The sensor is useful for checking conditions in the room where the speaker sits and for triggering compatible Apple Home accessories. It is not a weather station, a whole-home monitor, or a substitute for every dedicated environmental sensor.

What the HomePod mini’s sensor measures
Apple lists temperature and humidity among the HomePod mini’s sensors in its technical specifications. The sensor measures the environment around the speaker, associated with the room where the HomePod is installed.

That means it can tell you about conditions near the speaker. It does not measure the temperature inside the HomePod, report outdoor weather, or automatically represent every room in the house. Apple’s current HomePod guide identifies the HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) as the supported models; the original HomePod is not listed for this feature.

Apple did not just switch it on in 2026
The “secret sensor” description comes from the fact that the hardware was present before Apple exposed it to users. The HomePod mini launched in 2020, but Apple activated temperature and humidity sensing through HomePod Software 16.3, released in January 2023.
So the accurate version of the story is: the sensor was once dormant, then became user-accessible in 2023. Apple now openly documents it rather than treating it as a hidden capability. Current support information refers to HomePod software 26 or later, so an up-to-date HomePod remains important even though the feature itself is not new.
How to check the temperature or humidity
The simplest method is Siri. Ask the HomePod a room-specific question such as:

- “What’s the temperature in here?”
- “What’s the humidity in the basement?”
Use the name of the room where the HomePod is located when necessary. The result is intended to describe that speaker’s local environment, not a different room elsewhere in the property.
How to update a HomePod mini
HomePod devices normally install software updates automatically. To check manually:
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used to manage the HomePod.
- Open the Home app.
- Tap or click More.
- Choose Home Settings.
- Select Software Update.
- If an update is available, choose Update.
Keep the HomePod connected to power while it updates. A white spinning light appears on top during installation. Apple’s update instructions are available at Apple Support.

Why a reading may not appear immediately
A newly installed, restarted, or reset HomePod may need time to calibrate before it provides a result. Apple also warns that accuracy can decrease after audio has played at high volume for an extended period.
For the most representative reading, place the speaker:
- In an open area rather than inside a cabinet.
- Away from direct sunlight.
- Away from radiators and other heat sources.
- Away from heating or cooling vents.
- Where the surrounding conditions are typical for the room.
These are sensible placement practices, not a promise of laboratory-grade measurement. Apple says the sensor is optimized for approximately 15–30°C (59–86°F) and 30–70% relative humidity. Conditions outside those ranges may produce less useful results. See Apple’s HomePod user guide for the documented limitations.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Can it control a fan, thermostat, or blinds?
Yes, the reading can participate in Apple Home automations when the relevant setup and accessories support them. For example, a temperature threshold could trigger a compatible fan, or a humidity condition could be used in a broader smart-home routine.
The important distinction is that the HomePod mini supplies the measurement or trigger. It does not cool a room, operate HVAC equipment by itself, or physically move blinds. A compatible fan, thermostat, blind controller, or other smart-home accessory performs the action. Apple describes examples of this type of automation in its HomePod announcement.
HomePod mini sensor versus a dedicated thermometer
The built-in sensor is a convenient choice if you already own a HomePod mini and want a general room reading, Siri access, or a basic climate trigger without adding another device.

A dedicated sensor is a better fit when you need:
- Readings away from the speaker.
- Several rooms monitored at once.
- Battery-powered placement.
- Historical charts or more detailed logging.
- Monitoring inside a nursery, cabinet, greenhouse, garage, or other unsuitable HomePod location.
- Greater confidence while the HomePod is regularly playing loud audio.
For example, Eve Weather is a dedicated temperature-and-humidity sensor designed to work with a compatible Apple Home hub, including a HomePod mini; its official support page explains the requirements. Other ecosystems, including Aqara’s, may offer climate automation but can require checking model compatibility, a bridge, or an additional hub. Aqara outlines its Apple Home integration at aqara.com.
Troubleshooting: Siri is not giving a reading
- Check the model. The documented feature applies to HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation), not every HomePod.
- Check the software. In the Home app, go to More → Home Settings → Software Update.
- Update the controlling Apple device. Apple recommends using the latest compatible iOS, iPadOS, or macOS.
- Allow calibration time. Wait after setup, a restart, or a reset.
- Pause loud playback. Extended high-volume audio can affect accuracy.
- Ask about the correct room. The sensor reports the area around its own HomePod.
- Restart the speaker. Unplug it, wait briefly, reconnect it, and allow it to recalibrate.
If the number seems wrong, also look for nearby sunlight, vents, radiators, appliances, or other sources of heat and airflow. Treat the result as a convenient room estimate rather than precision environmental instrumentation.
The practical verdict
The HomePod mini’s temperature and humidity sensor is real and useful, especially for Siri queries and straightforward Apple Home automations. However, the claim that Apple “just switched it on” is historically misleading: the user-facing feature dates to January 2023, when HomePod Software 16.3 enabled it.

If you already have a HomePod mini, update it and try the sensor before buying anything else. If you need measurements in multiple rooms, battery operation, detailed history, or a carefully chosen measurement point, a dedicated Apple Home-, Matter-, or Thread-compatible sensor is the more appropriate tool.
