MagicMirror Alarm Clock: How to Add Alarms to MagicMirror2

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MagicMirror2 does not include a built-in alarm-clock feature. Its standard clock module displays the time and date, but recurring alarms, audio playback, pop-up alerts, and touch dismissal require a community module. For most Raspberry Pi mirror projects, the most direct option is MMM-AlarmClock.

This guide explains how to install it, configure weekday and weekend alarms, add sounds, test the system, and handle a separate display power schedule.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What “MagicMirror Alarm Clock” means

MagicMirror2 is an open-source, modular smart-mirror platform. Modules provide features such as the clock, calendar, weather, alerts, and third-party integrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These components are easy to confuse:

  • MagicMirror2: the platform running on the computer, commonly a Raspberry Pi.
  • clock: the built-in date-and-time display.
  • alert: the built-in visual notification module.
  • MMM-AlarmClock: a third-party module that schedules and plays alarms.
  • MMM-ModuleScheduler: a third-party scheduling tool for notifications, module visibility, and automation.

The official Clock documentation describes time and date display, timezone settings, and clock notifications. It does not document alarm creation, alarm persistence, sound playback, or snooze controls. In practical terms, MagicMirror supplies the clock display; an alarm requires additional software.

Amazon Basics Small Digital Oval Alarm Clock with LED Display, Nightlight, Snooze Function & Battery Backup, Black, 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 Inches
  • Digital alarm clock with a 0.7-inch green LED display for easily checking the time at a glance
  • Built-in nightlight gently illuminates a dark room
  • Repeating snooze function makes it possible to sleep a little longer
  • AC powered with integrated power supply. Batteries may be used as a backup power source to ensure time and alarms are retained in memory for 8 hours (refer to User Manual for details)
  • Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 inches (LxWxH); weighs 0.4 pounds (6.6 oz) Note: Batteries are not included

The best starting point: MMM-AlarmClock

MMM-AlarmClock is designed specifically for recurring MagicMirror alarms. Its repository documents support for:

  • 24-hour alarm times;
  • selected days of the week;
  • alarm titles and messages;
  • local MP3 files or HTTP/HTTPS audio streams;
  • volume from 0.0 to 1.0;
  • visual pop-up alerts;
  • gradual audio fade-in;
  • automatic stopping after a timer; and
  • touchscreen dismissal.

There is an important compatibility qualification. The MagicMirror core repository lists version 2.36.0, released April 30, 2026, while the visible update history for MMM-AlarmClock shows an October 18, 2023 update. That does not establish that the module is incompatible, but it means the combination should be tested on your installation rather than described as officially supported.

Hardware and software prerequisites

You will need:

  • a working MagicMirror2 installation;
  • a Linux-based computer, preferably a Raspberry Pi for a dedicated mirror;
  • access to the MagicMirror installation directory;
  • a display that remains on when the alarm fires;
  • working speakers or another audio output;
  • a local MP3 file or reachable audio stream; and
  • optionally, a touchscreen for press-to-dismiss behavior.

MagicMirror’s official installation documentation covers the supported manual setup, including installing the required Node.js version, cloning MagicMirror, running node --run install-mm, copying the sample configuration, and starting the application with node --run start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MagicMirror is designed primarily for Linux, and the project warns that some third-party modules may not work on Windows. Do not assume that a module tested on one Raspberry Pi, operating system, or MagicMirror version will behave identically on every installation.

Install MMM-AlarmClock

Stop MagicMirror before changing its configuration, then clone the module into the installation’s modules directory:

cd ~/MagicMirror/modules
git clone https://github.com/fewieden/MMM-AlarmClock.git

The resulting directory should be exactly:

~/MagicMirror/modules/MMM-AlarmClock

Place custom MP3 files in:

~/MagicMirror/modules/MMM-AlarmClock/sounds

The repository includes sounds named alarm.mp3 and blackforest.mp3. Start with one of those or another known-good local MP3 before troubleshooting an online stream.

Add a basic alarm

Open ~/MagicMirror/config/config.js and add the module inside the existing modules array:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
{
  module: "MMM-AlarmClock",
  position: "top_right",
  config: {
    alarms: [
      {
        time: "07:00",
        days: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5],
        title: "Wake up",
        message: "Good morning!",
        sound: "alarm.mp3"
      }
    ],
    volume: 1.0,
    popup: true,
    touch: false,
    timer: 60000
  }
}

Use 24-hour notation: "07:00" means 7:00 a.m., while "18:30" means 6:30 p.m. The alarms array is required, and recurring alarms are defined by a time plus selected weekdays.

Configure weekday and weekend alarms

The module uses numeric weekday values:

Number Day
0 Sunday
1 Monday
2 Tuesday
3 Wednesday
4 Thursday
5 Friday
6 Saturday

A weekday alarm can be written as:

{
  time: "06:30",
  days: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5],
  title: "Weekday alarm",
  message: "Time to get ready",
  sound: "alarm.mp3"
}

A weekend alarm can use:

{
  time: "08:00",
  days: [0, 6],
  title: "Weekend alarm",
  message: "Sleep-in alarm",
  sound: "blackforest.mp3"
}

The documented configuration is based on recurring days of the week. Do not assume it provides date-specific alarms, holiday exclusions, calendar rules, or a one-time alarm system. Those requirements may call for a custom module or a different integration.

Choose and test an alarm sound

For a local file, set:

sound: "alarm.mp3"

The module documentation also permits an HTTP or HTTPS audio URL. A local MP3 is usually the more dependable choice because it avoids buffering, authentication, changed URLs, network outages, and remote-server limits.

Online streams are convenient, but they add dependencies that are especially undesirable for an alarm. A stream may be reachable during setup and unavailable at the scheduled time. Test the complete system, not just the URL in a browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The repository attributes its bundled sounds to Orange Free Sounds under a CC BY-NC 4.0 licence. Preserve that attribution and do not assume the sounds are suitable for commercial redistribution or monetised content.

Meanwhile it can save the time setting, which can save the trouble of reset the clock. (Notice: Battery only operates alarm, not time display. The batteries are not included)

Popup alerts, timers, touch, and fade-in

The main options documented by the module include:

Option Purpose Documented default
volume Audio level from 0.0 to 1.0 1.0
popup Shows a visual alert true
touch Requires touch interaction to dismiss false
timer Alarm duration in milliseconds 60000
fade Gradually increases volume false
fadeTimer Fade period 60000
fadeStep Volume increase per second 0.005

With touch: true, the alarm requires a button press on a touch-capable display:

config: {
  alarms: [
    {
      time: "07:00",
      days: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5],
      title: "Wake up",
      message: "Dismiss the alarm",
      sound: "alarm.mp3"
    }
  ],
  touch: true,
  timer: 300000
}

Touch dismissal is not automatically the same as snooze. The documented module options cover dismissal and timed stopping, not a clearly documented snooze feature.

A conventional two-way mirror surface is not normally touch-capable. Touch behind mirror glass may require a compatible display, touch overlay, suitable glass or acrylic, and a physically accessible control. If the monitor is powered off, an on-screen dismissal button will not be available until the display is restored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The popup option and audio are separate. A popup can appear while the speakers are muted, and sound can play while the popup is disabled. MagicMirror’s built-in alert module displays notifications sent by other modules, while the notification system provides the integration mechanism described in the official notification documentation.

Turn the display on and off separately

An alarm module does not automatically power on a monitor. If you want the mirror visible only during certain hours, consider MMM-ModuleScheduler.

Install it with:

cd ~/MagicMirror/modules
git clone https://github.com/ianperrin/MMM-ModuleScheduler.git
cd MMM-ModuleScheduler
npm install --omit=dev

Then add:

{
  module: "MMM-ModuleScheduler"
}

The scheduler can send cron-style notifications, show or hide modules, dim them, and apply schedules globally or to selected groups. For example, this displays all modules at 6:00 and hides them at 22:00:

With a compatible remote-control module, it can also send monitor actions such as:

{
  notification: "REMOTE_ACTION",
  schedule: "30 7 * * *",
  payload: {
    action: "MONITORON"
  }
}

And:

{
  notification: "REMOTE_ACTION",
  schedule: "30 22 * * *",
  payload: {
    action: "MONITOROFF"
  }
}

This is a separate chain of functions: MMM-AlarmClock handles alarm timing and sound; MMM-ModuleScheduler handles schedules and notifications; and a remote-control module may handle display or Raspberry Pi actions. HDMI-CEC, monitor power management, and Raspberry Pi display behaviour vary by hardware, so software cannot guarantee that every monitor will wake reliably.

Test the alarm before relying on it

  1. Start MagicMirror and confirm it loads normally.
  2. Confirm the alarm module is in the correct directory and uses the exact module name.
  3. Copy a known-good local MP3 into the module’s sounds directory.
  4. Set an alarm two or three minutes in the future.
  5. Check that the selected weekday number is correct.
  6. Keep the Raspberry Pi awake and the display powered on.
  7. Check both operating-system volume and the speaker’s physical volume.
  8. Verify the sound, popup, timer, fade behaviour, and touch dismissal if enabled.
  9. Reboot and confirm MagicMirror starts automatically and the system clock is correct.
  10. Only then replace the test time with the intended recurring schedule.

Testing with a local MP3 first isolates scheduling and audio problems. Test a web stream separately after the local alarm works.

Validate the configuration and recover from startup failures

After editing config.js, run MagicMirror’s configuration check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
cd ~/MagicMirror
node --run config:check

If MagicMirror will not start, look for missing commas, smart quotes copied from a web page, malformed alarms arrays, incorrect file names, or a module directory that does not match the configured module name. Also check for unsupported dependencies and Node.js or MagicMirror version mismatches.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
MagicMirror will not start Syntax error or malformed module configuration Run the configuration check, remove the alarm block, and re-add it incrementally.
Module is not visible Wrong directory, module name, position, or layout issue Confirm the directory and exact name; try a standard position such as top_right.
Alarm appears but no sound plays Wrong file, wrong folder, muted system, or incorrect audio device Test the bundled sound, verify the local path, and check the Raspberry Pi audio output.
Popup does not appear popup is false or alert integration is unavailable Enable popup and confirm the default alert module is configured.
Touch dismissal fails Touch is disabled, unavailable, or obscured Set touch: true and verify that the display and mirror assembly support accessible touch.
Alarm fires on the wrong day Incorrect numeric mapping Remember Sunday is 0, Monday is 1, and Saturday is 6.
Stream alarm fails Network outage, buffering, authentication, or changed URL Use a local MP3 for dependable alarms.
Monitor is blank Monitor is off or display power management failed Keep it on while testing and treat monitor power as a separate automation problem.
Alarm works once but not after reboot MagicMirror autostart, time sync, or startup failure Test reboot recovery and verify the system time and timezone.
Module breaks after an update Third-party compatibility issue Check the module repository and test the installed version before upgrading a production mirror.

Which approach should you use?

Choose MMM-AlarmClock when

  • you want a straightforward recurring alarm;
  • weekday and weekend schedules are sufficient;
  • local sound, a popup, and optional touch dismissal matter; and
  • you accept the maintenance and compatibility risk of community software.

Choose MMM-ModuleScheduler when

  • the main requirement is scheduling notifications or module visibility;
  • the mirror should change modes overnight;
  • you want to coordinate display or monitor actions; or
  • you are comfortable combining several modules.

Use a custom module when

You need date-specific alarms, holidays, snooze, escalating volume, sunrise-aware behaviour, calendar integration, sensor-based dismissal, or external hardware such as a buzzer, relay, vibration motor, or smart-home scene.

Keep a conventional alarm as backup

Raspberry Pi power loss, operating-system crashes, SD-card corruption, incorrect time, audio-routing errors, display failures, and third-party incompatibilities can all defeat a smart-mirror alarm. If missing the alarm would have serious consequences, use a phone or conventional alarm clock as a backup.

Hardware checklist for a construction project

The software is free, but a useful alarm mirror depends on the physical build:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Computer: a Raspberry Pi or similar Linux computer capable of running MagicMirror2.
  • Power supply: a properly rated, stable supply for the exact computer and connected peripherals.
  • Storage: reliable microSD or alternative storage, with configuration backups.
  • Display: an HDMI monitor or compatible panel sized for the mirror frame.
  • Audio: wired or USB-powered speakers are generally easier to troubleshoot than Bluetooth speakers that may sleep or disconnect.
  • Mirror material: two-way mirror glass or acrylic with suitable brightness, viewing angle, thickness, and mounting.
  • Optional touchscreen: only if the display and mirror assembly allow the dismissal control to be reached.

Touch adds cost and installation complexity. A non-touch display is simpler and works with timed dismissal. Likewise, a bright display behind unsuitable mirror material can undermine the entire project regardless of how well the alarm module is configured.

Sources and compatibility notes

Use the MMM-AlarmClock repository for its current configuration details, the official MagicMirror documentation for core installation and module behaviour, and the MMM-ModuleScheduler repository for scheduler syntax and remote-control examples.

The core release evidence available for this guide identifies MagicMirror2 v2.36.0, released April 30, 2026. Because third-party modules can lag behind core releases, test the exact versions used in your mirror and avoid upgrading immediately before depending on the alarm.
