A lawn full of fresh holes is not automatically a mole problem. When the damage appears overnight, skunks and raccoons are often the leading suspects because they dig for grubs and earthworms. In the southern United States, larger tapered holes may point to a nine-banded armadillo. The safest and most effective first step is to identify the visitor before applying a treatment.

A lawn covered in fresh, shallow holes is not automatically a mole problem. If the damage appears overnight, the most likely explanation is often a nocturnal animal searching for food in the soil—especially a skunk or raccoon. In the southern United States, several larger, tapered holes may point to a nine-banded armadillo.

The holes are a clue, not a diagnosis. Before applying a repellent, pesticide, or trap, document the damage and identify the visitor by its hole pattern, tracks, food sources, and nighttime activity.

What the holes may reveal

What you see Most likely possibilities What to check next
A few tiny holes with small conical soil mounds Ants or other insects Whether the openings are too small for a mammal; avoid assuming wildlife is responsible
About 2-inch holes Yellowjackets or cicada killers Flying insects entering and leaving the openings; keep children and pets away
Small, shallow, scattered divots that resemble golf-ball marks Skunks, raccoons, or gray squirrels Tracks, odor, season, and whether the damage appeared overnight
Several 3- to 5-inch tapered or cone-shaped holes Nine-banded armadillo, particularly in the southern United States Whether the holes appeared in one night and whether grubs or other soil invertebrates are present
Raised tunnels or a different pattern of soil disturbance Potentially a different lawn or burrowing pest Do not treat until the pattern is identified

Skunks: the classic overnight lawn digger

Skunks are nocturnal and commonly dig in lawns, golf courses, and other sodded areas while searching for white grubs and earthworms. Their work can leave many shallow, random holes that look like someone pressed a golf divot tool into the turf.

A lingering skunk odor strengthens the case, but its absence does not rule skunks out. Odor may dissipate, the animal may not have sprayed, or the wind may carry the smell away from the damaged area.

More holes in fall can also make skunks a stronger possibility, although season alone cannot identify the animal. Confirm the pattern with tracks or a camera before choosing a control method.

Raccoons: look beyond the lawn

Raccoons are also nocturnal and may disturb turf, gardens, and planting beds while searching for food. Their five-toed tracks are a useful clue. Repeated visits are more likely when the property offers an easy meal or drink, such as:

  • Unsecured garbage or food scraps;
  • Pet food left outdoors overnight;
  • Outdoor water bowls, leaking faucets, or other accessible water;
  • Fallen fruit; or
  • A garden or compost area containing edible material.

Raccoon damage may extend beyond isolated lawn divots. Look for tipped containers, disturbed mulch, dug-up garden beds, and tracks near the freshest holes.

Armadillos: a stronger possibility in the South

Nine-banded armadillos are especially relevant in the southern United States. While foraging for insects and other soil invertebrates, they can make shallow holes several inches across. The openings are often tapered or cone-shaped because the animal probes into the soil, and one animal may create many holes in a single night.

Geography matters here: an armadillo is a much more plausible suspect in its established range than in a region where it is not commonly found. A group of larger, tapered holes in a southern yard is worth investigating with a trail camera rather than treating the lawn for insects or mammals at random.

Do not overlook insects and turf problems

Not every opening is made by a mammal. Very small holes with conical mounds can be associated with ants, while holes around two inches across may belong to yellowjackets or cicada killers. Observe from a safe distance before disturbing an active opening.

White grubs can create a two-layer problem

White grubs may damage a lawn directly and indirectly. The larvae feed on turf roots, weakening the grass. Their presence can then attract birds, moles, skunks, raccoons, and armadillos that dig through the turf to eat them. The result is a lawn with both an underlying turf problem and secondary wildlife damage.

Check for grubs instead of immediately applying an insecticide. Lift a small section of sod at the edge of the damaged area and inspect the soil and roots. A lawn that is loose, yellowing, browning, drought-stressed, or spongy may have root damage in addition to the visible holes.

Do not treat solely because an animal is digging. Any grub treatment should be based on confirmed pest presence, the product label, and guidance appropriate to your region. Killing insects without confirming that they are causing the problem may waste money and leave the nighttime visitor looking for food elsewhere in the yard.

How to identify the nighttime visitor

  1. Photograph the damage first

Take close and wide photographs before filling or smoothing the holes. Record the approximate width and depth, whether the opening is round or tapered, whether soil is pushed aside, and whether the holes are randomly scattered or arranged in a line. Place a ruler or another familiar object beside one opening for scale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Search for tracks

Inspect soft soil, damp mulch, and the edges of planting beds. If the ground is hard and prints are not visible, sprinkle a thin band of flour near fresh damage—not a thick pile that could become a food source. Check it the next morning and photograph any prints before they are disturbed. Five-toed tracks support a raccoon identification, but a single unclear print is not conclusive.

    • 2.4" Color Display + User-Friendly Controls – Review footage on the spot with an intuitive menu and easy-access buttons.
  3. Check for scat, odor, and den entrances

Scat, a nearby den entrance, and skunk odor can narrow the possibilities. Do not handle feces, approach a den, or investigate a confined animal casually. Keep children and pets away from these areas.

  4. Remove easy attractants

Secure garbage, bring pet food indoors, remove outdoor water overnight, and collect fallen fruit. These steps can reduce repeat visits while you continue identifying the animal. They will not necessarily stop a visitor that is following a strong grub or earthworm food source, but they eliminate common reasons for raccoons and other wildlife to return.

  5. Use a camera to see what happens after dark

A motion-activated infrared camera is often the quickest way to resolve uncertainty. Mount it to a tree, post, or other stationary object near the freshest damage. Position it close enough to show the animal clearly without pointing it at a busy road or a neighbor’s private area. Night capability, trigger speed, burst mode, and battery life are useful features when comparing models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you expect to monitor the yard for several nights, a motion-activated wildlife trail camera can document whether the visitor is a skunk, raccoon, armadillo, squirrel, or something else. Use the footage to identify the problem before selecting a treatment; a camera is an identification tool, not a repellent or removal device.

A practical decision tree

  • A few tiny holes with soil mounds: Investigate ants or solitary wasps before blaming a mammal. Keep people and pets away if stinging insects are entering the openings.
  • Scattered, shallow divots appearing overnight: Skunk, raccoon, or gray squirrel is more plausible. Check for grubs, tracks, and attractants.
  • Divots plus a persistent odor: Skunk moves higher on the list, although odor is not required. Confirm with tracks or a camera.
  • Large five-toed tracks, tipped trash, or garden disturbance: Raccoon becomes more likely. Remove food and water sources and examine possible entry points around structures.
  • Several 3- to 5-inch tapered holes in a southern yard: Consider a nine-banded armadillo, particularly if soil invertebrates are present.
  • A den or opening beneath a foundation, crawlspace, attic, shed, or other structure: Stop before sealing it. First determine whether an animal—or dependent young—is inside.

What not to do

Do not start with a generic repellent

Repellents vary in effectiveness and may be inappropriate for the species, location, or local regulations. A product aimed at one animal will not necessarily address a grub problem or another species. Identification should come first.

Do not use mothballs or poison outdoors

Mothballs are not a general-purpose wildlife treatment, and poison can create risks for pets, children, scavenging wildlife, and the animal that consumes it. It may also be unlawful or contrary to the product label. Never use a pesticide or toxicant in a way the label does not allow.

Do not trap or relocate casually

Wildlife-control laws, relocation rules, seasons, and acceptable trapping methods vary by state and municipality. Misidentification can result in the wrong trap, an injured animal, continued damage, or a violation of local requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not seal a structural opening too soon

If an animal is using a hole in a foundation, crawlspace, attic, shed, or other outbuilding, sealing it prematurely can trap the animal or dependent young inside. Once occupancy has been assessed and exclusion is appropriate, materials such as galvanized hardware cloth, sheet metal, cement, or bricks may be suitable depending on the opening and species. These are exclusion materials for confirmed structural entry; they are not a treatment for scattered holes across a lawn.

Consider a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional when a den is under a structure, the animal behaves abnormally, young may be present, or local rules make trapping and relocation complicated. Ask what species-specific and humane methods the operator is legally permitted to use.

Wildlife safety: keep your distance

Keep children and pets away from wild animals, dens, and fresh feces. In the United States, the CDC identifies raccoons and skunks among important wildlife rabies hosts. Be especially cautious around animals that appear sick, unusually aggressive, unusually tame, uncoordinated, or active during the day despite normally being nocturnal.

Gloves do not make handling wildlife or feces safe. Do not attempt to catch, corner, hand-feed, or move an animal. If a person or pet is bitten, scratched, or otherwise potentially exposed to saliva from wildlife, wash the wound promptly and contact a healthcare provider and the local health department. Contact a veterinarian promptly for a pet exposure and follow local public-health instructions.

Repair the lawn only after finding the cause

Once the visitor has stopped returning—or the food source and access route have been addressed—rake loose soil back into the holes, replace displaced sod where possible, and reseed or resod bare patches according to the grass type and season. If the turf remains spongy, yellowing, loose, or easy to lift, investigate root damage and grubs rather than treating the holes as a purely cosmetic problem.

Repeated repairs without identification are usually temporary. A skunk may continue following grubs, a raccoon may keep returning to unsecured food, and an armadillo may revisit productive soil. Fixing the attraction or access point is more durable than filling the same holes every morning.

Bottom line

The holes are a clue, not a diagnosis. Check their size and shape, look for tracks and grubs, and use a trail camera to catch the nighttime visitor in the act. Once you know whether the culprit is a skunk, raccoon, armadillo, or something smaller, you can choose a response that addresses the real problem—and avoid making the yard damage worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What animal makes shallow holes in a lawn overnight?

Fresh, shallow holes that appear overnight are commonly caused by nocturnal animals searching for grubs, earthworms, or other soil invertebrates. Skunks and raccoons are common possibilities. In the southern United States, larger tapered holes may indicate a nine-banded armadillo. Tiny holes with soil mounds may instead be caused by ants or other insects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a skunk or raccoon is digging up my yard?

A skunk often leaves scattered, shallow divots and may leave a lingering odor, while a raccoon may leave distinctive five-toed tracks along with tipped trash, disturbed gardens, or other signs of feeding. Neither clue is conclusive by itself; an infrared trail camera can confirm the animal.

Should I treat my lawn for grubs?

Lift a small section of sod at the edge of the damaged area and inspect the soil and roots for white grubs. Do not apply an insecticide solely because an animal is digging. Treatment should be based on confirmed pest presence, the product label, and local extension guidance.

Should I block the hole under my shed or foundation?

Do not seal an opening beneath a structure until you are confident that no animal or dependent young are inside. Wildlife laws and humane-removal requirements vary by location, so a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional may be appropriate.

What should I do if a wild animal seems sick or aggressive?

Keep people and pets away, do not handle the animal or feces, and do not try to trap or move it yourself. After a bite, scratch, or possible saliva exposure, wash the wound and contact a healthcare provider and local health department promptly. Pet exposures should be reported to a veterinarian.

The Bottom Line

Start with identification, not treatment. Overnight shallow divots most often suggest a skunk or raccoon, while larger tapered holes in a southern yard may indicate an armadillo. Check for grubs, tracks, and attractants, and use an infrared trail camera before choosing repellents, pesticides, traps, or exclusion work.
