To fix winter water problems in a yard, first trace the water to its source and identify a safe place for it to go. Roof runoff from a downspout, surface water flowing across the lawn, and groundwater collecting in saturated soil call for different solutions. Start by checking downspouts, grading, pooling spots, and existing drains; do not install a French drain until you know it fits the problem and has a viable outlet.
Trace where the water comes from—and where it can go
Rain, snowmelt, saturated soil, and frozen ground can make drainage problems more visible in winter. Watch where water first appears and how it moves. A drain that collects water but has nowhere suitable to discharge it will not solve the underlying problem.
- Roof runoff: Water appears at or below a downspout, or flows toward the house after falling from the roof.
- Surface runoff: Water travels over the ground in a broad sheet, follows a channel, or gathers in a low spot.
- Saturated ground or groundwater: Soil remains wet or water appears without an obvious surface-flow path. Foundation water may involve a separate, deeper drainage issue.
Identify a safe outlet before choosing a system. Local rules may restrict where water can be discharged, and redirecting it from one area can worsen conditions elsewhere or affect a neighboring property. Government of Canada homeowner guidance emphasizes managing runoff away from the home and checking applicable requirements: Floods: How to protect your home.
Start with low-disruption checks
- Inspect downspouts. Check whether each one is blocked, disconnected, or releasing water beside the foundation. Note where the water flows after it leaves the outlet.
- Look for surface-flow paths. After rain or snowmelt, observe whether water moves toward the house, crosses the yard, or follows an existing swale. Check whether debris, sediment, or landscaping changes have obstructed that route.
- Mark pooling locations. A defined low point differs from broad sheet flow; record where water gathers and whether it has a path out.
- Check existing outlets and inlets. Clear accessible grates and openings of leaves or debris if it is safe to do so. Follow the system to understand where it discharges.
- Assess winter conditions. Frozen soil can limit infiltration and make excavation impractical. Inspection and clearing accessible drainage points may still be useful when conditions are safe.
Match the fix to the water source
| What you observe | Possible approach | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Runoff begins at a downspout | Use a downspout extension or solid pipe to carry roof water away from the foundation. | The route needs a suitable discharge point and must comply with local rules; no single extension distance fits every property. |
| Water flows broadly across the surface | Correct the surface grading where appropriate, or use a swale to convey runoff. | Water should move away from the home toward an appropriate outlet without creating erosion or transferring the problem. |
| Water pools in a defined low spot | A yard catch basin with a grate and compatible outlet pipe can collect surface water there. | The basin still needs a properly routed outlet; collecting water alone does not remove it from the property. |
| Ground remains saturated or groundwater is suspected | A French drain may collect and convey underground water. | It needs suitable site conditions and an outlet. A foundation perimeter drain, sometimes called weeping tile, is a distinct, deeper system. |
| No suitable outlet is available, or water enters a basement | Have a qualified local drainage or foundation professional assess the property. | A generic drain cannot be assumed to solve the problem; local regulations and foundation conditions matter. |
When grading or a swale fits
Proper grading is a first-line way to keep surface runoff moving away from a home. A swale is a wide, shallow channel that conveys surface water to an appropriate outlet. It may be vegetated or protected with stone where erosion is a concern. Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District describes runoff-control approaches including grading and swales in its local guidance: Drainage problem guidance. Conditions and regulations vary by location.

When a catch basin fits
A catch basin is intended to collect surface water at a low point. It is not a substitute for a discharge route: the compatible outlet pipe must carry the collected water somewhere suitable. Keep the grate and inlet free of debris when accessible, and consider whether leaves or sediment are likely to accumulate there.
When a French drain fits
A French drain generally uses a gravel-filled trench, porous or perforated pipe, and filter fabric to collect and convey water underground. It may suit a groundwater or saturated-soil problem when the site allows the system to intercept the water and discharge it safely. It is not interchangeable with a downspout extension, swale, or catch basin, and a product kit alone does not establish the right design.

Government of Canada guidance describes French drains and notes that professional installation can occur when the ground is not frozen: Floods: How to protect your home. That does not mean every winter repair must wait; feasibility depends on soil, weather, site safety, and the work required.
What to do in winter—and what to defer
Use winter water as evidence of where runoff travels, but do not assume frozen soil will absorb or accept it as it would under different conditions. Prioritize safe observation and clearing of accessible existing inlets or outlets. Defer excavation when ground is frozen or conditions make the work unsafe. Government of Canada guidance specifically states that professional French-drain installation can take place when the ground is not frozen; it does not establish one timing rule for every repair or climate.

Before excavation, call 811 in the United States to have underground utility lines marked, as Clemson University Cooperative Extension advises. Follow the applicable local utility-location process if you are elsewhere. Clemson’s installation guidance also says to maintain a 1% slope along the trench; that figure applies to the described trench installation and is not a universal yard-grading specification. See Landscape Drainage (Drew Jeffers, Clemson University Cooperative Extension, February 24, 2020).

Get qualified local help when water enters a basement, the source is unclear, a suitable outlet is uncertain, or the work requires deep excavation or foundation drainage. A professional can assess how soil, slope, foundation conditions, and local discharge requirements affect the design. Check permit and discharge rules before routing runoff, and do not direct it toward another part of the property or a neighbor without confirming the route is appropriate.
