Yale’s $189.99 Google Home smart lock replaces Nest × Yale—but existing owners may not need to upgrade

Yale’s new $189.99 Smart Lock with Matter is the successor to Nest × Yale, but it requires compatible Google Matter and Thread hardware. Here’s who should buy it—and who should keep the old lock.

Yale’s Smart Lock with Matter is the marketed successor to the Nest × Yale Lock. It launched in the United States at a $189.99 MSRP with Matter-over-Thread connectivity, Google Home integration, and Snow or Matte Black finishes. But the replacement is not mandatory for existing Nest × Yale owners: functioning older locks continue to receive support, while the new model still requires compatible Google Home hardware for full setup and remote control.

What Yale launched

Yale and Google announced the Yale Smart Lock with Matter on June 24, 2025. It is designed for Google Home and carries Google’s Google Home Preferred Product designation, which is positioned above ordinary “Works with Google Home” compatibility.

  • US MSRP: $189.99
  • Connectivity: Matter over Thread
  • Launch finishes: Snow and Matte Black
  • Later finish announced: Ash, subject to current retailer availability
  • Launch availability: Yale’s store, Amazon, and select US retailers

The product is intended to replace the original Nest × Yale collaboration commercially. That does not mean Google has immediately disabled older locks or that every existing owner needs new hardware. Google’s announcement and Yale’s launch release establish the price, positioning, connectivity, and availability claims.

Matter and Thread are the important changes

The Nest × Yale Lock uses Yale’s older Weave architecture and communicates with Google’s services through a Nest Connect bridge. The new lock uses Matter, a smart-home interoperability standard, over Thread, a low-power mesh networking technology.

  • Secure smart lock for your front door; replaces the deadbolt lock you already have
  • Keyless entry on the LED keypad so you can lock and unlock your front door without a key; keypad chimes play sounds to confirm responses, such as locking, unlocking, or turning Privacy Mode on or off
  • Let someone in from anywhere; unlock the door with your phone for easy guest access
  • Give unique passcode to family and guests and set a schedule to control when they work; when you don’t want to be disturbed, Privacy Mode disables the keypad so it can’t be unlocked with a passcode
  • Get alerts when someone locks or unlocks the door or tries to tamper with your smart door lock

For a Google Home installation, the lock needs a compatible device that provides both:

  1. A Matter controller or hub; and
  2. A Thread border router.

A Google Home app on a phone is not enough by itself. Google lists the following examples of compatible hardware:

  • Google TV Streamer (4K)
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Hub, second generation
  • Nest Wifi Pro

Check Google’s current compatible-device directory before buying. Not every Google speaker or display provides the required combination of Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functions.

The price may not be the complete system cost

The $189.99 figure is the lock’s MSRP. If your home does not already have suitable Google hardware, you may also need a compatible controller and Thread border router. Matter reduces dependence on the old Nest Connect architecture; it does not eliminate the need for a smart-home controller.

Nest × Yale versus Yale Smart Lock with Matter

Feature Nest × Yale Lock Yale Smart Lock with Matter
Positioning Original Nest and Yale collaboration Marketed successor to the Nest × Yale line
Smart-home connection Weave through Nest Connect Matter over Thread
Google hardware Nest Connect required for app and Wi-Fi connectivity Compatible Matter controller and Thread border router required
Announced US price Google Store has listed it from $249, although availability can change $189.99 MSRP
Existing-owner status Still supported, with continued security updates and expanded Google Home support New purchase and replacement option

Google’s Nest × Yale support documentation says the older lock requires Nest Connect for app connectivity, has no monthly subscription requirement, and is designed to replace a standard deadbolt. Google has also said that Nest × Yale locks will continue receiving security updates. In March 2026, Google announced expanded Nest × Yale support in the Google Home app.

That makes “replaces Nest × Yale” a product-line statement, not proof of an immediate end of service. Hardware succession and software support are separate issues.

Should existing Nest × Yale owners replace their lock?

Usually, no—not immediately. Keep the existing lock if it operates reliably, your Nest Connect is working, and Google Home provides the features you need. Replacing a functioning lock creates installation work and introduces the possibility that the new model will not fit your door or provide every legacy feature in exactly the same way.

The new Yale becomes more compelling if you want:

  • A Matter-based smart-home architecture
  • Less reliance on legacy Nest Connect hardware
  • A newer lock for a fresh installation or replacement project
  • Potential interoperability with other Matter-supported platforms
  • A new warranty or replacement unit
  • A Google Home installation that already has compatible Thread hardware

Do not assume that Matter means identical features everywhere. Locking, status reporting, guest-code management, schedules, activity history, auto-lock, alerts, and remote access can vary by platform and product implementation. Confirm the feature list for this exact US model before removing an older lock.

What new buyers need before installation

1. Confirm the smart-home hardware

For a Google Home-only setup, plan on the lock, the Google Home app, and a compatible Matter hub/controller with Thread border-router capability. Existing households may already have suitable hardware, such as a Nest Hub Max, second-generation Nest Hub, Nest Wifi Pro, or Google TV Streamer (4K).

Do not assume a Wi-Fi extender, Nest Mini, or ordinary Google speaker can substitute for a Thread border router. Thread and Wi-Fi are different networking technologies.

2. Check the door, not just the ecosystem

Smart locks are mechanical installations as well as connected devices. Before ordering, verify the new Yale model’s own installation guide for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Single-cylinder deadbolt compatibility
  • Door thickness and backset limits
  • Clearance from the handle or knob
  • Deadbolt alignment with the strike plate
  • Weather exposure and the product’s weather-resistance rating
  • Whether your door uses mortise, multipoint, sliding, or glass hardware

Do not transfer the old Nest × Yale dimensions automatically to the new model. For reference, Google lists the older lock for door thicknesses of 1⅜ inches (35 mm), 1¾ inches (44 mm), and 2 to 2¼ inches (51 to 57 mm), with a maximum listed backset of 2¾ inches (70 mm). The older lock is not designed for glass or sliding doors, mortise locks, or multipoint locks. Those figures do not prove compatibility with the new Matter model.

  • Let someone in from anywhere; unlock the door with your phone for easy guest access

  • Get alerts when someone locks or unlocks the door or tries to tamper with your smart door lock

3. Test the mechanical alignment

Before connecting the lock, the bolt should move smoothly by hand with the door closed. A bolt that rubs against the strike plate can cause motor strain, failed locking, and faster battery depletion. Correct the door or strike alignment first; changing Matter settings will not fix a mechanical obstruction.

4. Confirm fallback access

Before installation, read the new lock’s manual to confirm its battery type, battery-life estimate, physical-key or emergency-power method, keypad arrangement, and offline behavior. The currently verified launch material does not establish those specifications for this exact model, so they should not be inferred from the older Nest × Yale Lock.

Common setup problems

No compatible Matter hub

The lock may fit the door but fail to complete Google Home setup if the home lacks a suitable Matter controller and Thread border router. The remedy is to add a supported Google device or use another supported Matter setup verified for this model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thread coverage problems

A working Wi-Fi network does not guarantee a strong Thread network. If the lock appears unavailable, check the location and status of the Thread border router, install available firmware updates, and avoid assuming that a Wi-Fi extender will improve Thread coverage.

Feature mismatch between platforms

Matter can allow a device to appear in more than one supported smart-home ecosystem, but features may not be identical. If you use Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, or SmartThings, check Yale’s documentation for this specific US lock rather than relying on general Matter claims.

Legacy migration confusion

Moving an existing Nest × Yale lock into expanded Google Home support is not the same as replacing it with new Yale hardware. Existing owners should first check whether the updated Google Home controls meet their needs.

Alternatives worth considering

The best alternative depends on the door, preferred entry method, and smart-home platform—not just the advertised price.

  • Yale Assure Lock 2: Consider Yale’s broader range if you want different entry methods or Yale ecosystem options. See Yale’s official store.
  • Schlage smart locks: Worth comparing if keypad choices, physical-key versions, or a security-focused product line are priorities. See Schlage.
  • Aqara smart locks: Relevant to buyers looking at Matter, multi-platform homes, fingerprint entry, or broader automation features. See Aqara.
  • August: Interior retrofit designs may suit renters or homeowners who want to retain the exterior deadbolt hardware. See August.
  • Level: A choice for buyers who prefer less visible smart-lock hardware. See Level.
  • Kwikset: Worth comparing where existing Kwikset hardware, keyways, or keypad options matter. See Kwikset.

For any alternative, compare Matter transport, platform support, keypad or fingerprint access, physical-key and emergency-entry options, bridge requirements, retrofit versus full-deadbolt installation, subscription requirements, security certification, and the availability of guest codes and activity logs.

Bottom line

The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is a genuine next-generation replacement for the Nest × Yale product line, and its $189.99 MSRP is lower than the old Google Store listing. It is most attractive for a new Google Home installation that already has compatible Matter and Thread hardware.

It is a weaker reason to replace a functioning Nest × Yale lock. Google says the older model continues to receive security support and has gained broader Google Home integration. Existing owners should upgrade for Matter, newer hardware, or a specific installation need—not simply because the new Yale has replaced the old model commercially.

Before buying, confirm three things: your door fits the new lock, your home has the required Matter controller and Thread border router, and the new model provides the entry and emergency-access features you expect.
