Its cameras, software integration and comparatively large work area make it easier to use than many DIY CO₂ machines. But it is not maintenance-free, apartment-friendly or a universal production tool—and the newer P2S makes the original P2 difficult to recommend at nearly full price.
Buy the P2 when it is substantially cheaper than the P2S and you specifically value its established ecosystem. Otherwise, compare the P2S, a more serviceable CO₂ machine, a diode or fiber laser, or outsourcing the work before spending roughly $4,000 on the machine alone.

What it can cut and engrave
Strong use cases
A CO₂ laser is a strong fit for many nonmetal workshop materials. The P2 is intended for applications including:
- Wood and plywood, depending on species, glue composition and thickness.
- Acrylic.
- Cardboard and paper.
- Leather.
- MDF and felt.
- Laser-safe rubber.
- Glass engraving.
- Some stone and ceramic engraving applications.
xTool says the P2 can cut up to 18 mm black walnut and 20 mm acrylic in one pass under specified conditions. Treat those as upper-bound manufacturer claims, not ordinary guarantees. Results depend on density, color, flatness, moisture, focus, airflow, alignment, optical cleanliness, tube condition and the exact material batch. A material that cuts well in a flat, dry sample may perform very differently in production.
Engraving is not cutting
The P2 can engrave coated metal and anodized aluminum. xTool also identifies anodized titanium steel and treated stainless steel applications, with stainless steel requiring an appropriate marking coating. The machine does not cut bare metal.
That distinction matters. If your business involves steel tags, aluminum parts or brass components, a fiber laser is the more appropriate category. The P2 remains useful for engraving a coating or surface treatment, but it is not a metal-cutting machine. xTool’s support FAQ provides the relevant material qualifications.
Materials to refuse
Never laser an unidentified plastic. PVC, vinyl, chlorine-containing materials, unknown composites and some treated or coated products can release toxic or corrosive fumes and damage the machine. xTool’s troubleshooting documentation identifies glass, ceramics, metal, concrete and similar materials as unsupported for cutting, even though some may be suitable for marking or engraving. Read the material and cutting troubleshooting guidance before testing an unfamiliar stock.
Camera positioning: useful, not magical
The P2’s dual-camera system is one of its most practical features. It can show material inside the bed, help place artwork around existing objects and reduce waste from misaligned stock. That is particularly useful for one-off signs, personalized gifts, irregular blanks and partially used sheets.

Camera distortion, calibration, material height, warped stock and bed configuration can affect the result. For repeat production, use jigs, registration pins, fixed origins or test grids where appropriate. xTool’s stated 0.01 mm precision should not be presented as the real-world accuracy of camera placement or as a guaranteed cut tolerance.
Software: xTool’s ecosystem or LightBurn
xTool software
xTool’s first-party software is the natural starting point for buyers who want the cameras and accessories integrated with minimal setup. Its potential advantages include camera workflows, material libraries, recommended settings and easier onboarding.
The trade-off is ecosystem dependence. Interfaces and supported features can change, and advanced production users may find a proprietary workflow less flexible than a mature, cross-brand laser-control application. Confirm current operating-system support and feature availability for your exact P2 configuration.
LightBurn
The P2 product page advertises LightBurn compatibility. LightBurn is attractive to experienced users, multi-brand workshops and businesses that want advanced layout and production controls. It is separate paid software, however, and its camera and accessory workflow may not expose every xTool-specific feature in the same way as xTool’s own software.

Real workspace requirements
“Desktop” describes the enclosure and footprint, not the infrastructure. The P2 weighs about 45 kg and needs more room than its published dimensions suggest. Before ordering, measure:
- Doorways, stairs, elevators and the route to the installation point.
- Workbench depth and load capacity.
- Clearance to open the lid and reach service areas.
- Exhaust-hose routing and fan placement.
- Room for a riser base or passthrough system, if required.
- Nearby electrical outlets.
- Storage for sheet goods away from heat and ignition sources.
You need a stable, level, nonflammable surface. Add operating clearance, ventilation equipment and space to load material—not merely the 1,000 × 639 × 268 mm machine envelope.
Ventilation, cooling and safety
The P2 requires exhaust ventilation or a compatible filtration system, water cooling, air assist and regular optical maintenance. Outdoor exhaust is often the clearest solution, but local building, fire, workplace, school and landlord rules vary. A room air purifier is not automatically equivalent to exhausting fumes outdoors, and filtration suitability depends on the material, filter condition, room volume and local requirements.
xTool states that the P2 should operate between 5 and 35 °C, with 10–30 °C recommended for optimal performance. It also says processing must not be left unattended and does not recommend continuous cutting for more than four hours. These are important operating constraints, not optional advice. See xTool’s operating and cooling guidance.
A safe installation should include:
- A verified exhaust path or an appropriately specified filtration arrangement.
- Correct coolant and circulation before operation.
- Air assist with adequate airflow.
- Fire detection and suitable fire-response equipment.
- Nonflammable placement and safe material storage.
- Continuous supervision during every job.
- A plan for stopping the machine if smoke, flame, coolant or exhaust problems occur.
If you cannot provide these conditions, do not buy a CO₂ laser for a bedroom, improvised office or poorly ventilated apartment workspace.
Setup is easier than DIY, not plug-and-play
The P2 reduces much of the mechanical work associated with open-frame CO₂ machines, but installation still involves real equipment work:
- Move the approximately 45 kg machine safely.
- Place it on a stable, level, nonflammable surface.
- Connect and route the exhaust system.
- Fill and configure the cooling system correctly.
- Connect air assist.
- Install software and connect by USB, Wi-Fi or Ethernet as supported.
- Calibrate the camera and material height.
- Run a low-risk test cut.
- Check focus, alignment, airflow and exhaust before production.
The first successful cut is not the end of setup. You still need material-specific settings, test pieces and a maintenance routine.
Maintenance and common failures
xTool lists an estimated CO₂ tube life of approximately 6,000–8,000 hours. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed production period. Laser output can decline before complete failure, and service life depends on operating conditions and maintenance. Tube replacement is a significant service event involving high voltage, downtime and safe handling; it is not equivalent to changing a diode-laser lens.
Routine ownership includes cleaning mirrors and the focal lens, checking alignment, maintaining coolant, inspecting air assist, cleaning the exhaust path and watching for changes in cut quality. If the P2 stops cutting through, xTool’s documented diagnostic sequence is:
- Calibrate the laser path.
- Confirm speed and power settings.
- Verify the actual material thickness and distance settings.
- Inspect and clean the mirrors and focal lens.
- Check for laser-tube degradation.
- Set cut-mode airflow to 100%.
- Confirm that the focal lens is installed correctly, with the convex side facing up.
- Confirm that the material is compatible.
Uneven cutting can also result from warped stock, incorrect focus, mechanical alignment problems, optical contamination, airflow variation or an aging tube. Increasing power immediately is not always the right answer and may increase heat and tube wear.

P2 versus P2S in 2026
As of August 18, 2026, xTool presents the P2 and P2S together in the same product family, with the P2S positioned as the newer model. The official product page does not, in the supplied evidence, establish a complete hardware-by-hardware comparison covering airflow, maintenance, cameras, software parity, accessory interchangeability and safety features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat limits what can responsibly be claimed. The P2S should not be treated as a cosmetic refresh without verified specifications, but the original P2 should not be bought at near-full price simply because it has a mature user base. Before ordering, confirm:
- Which model the page or bundle actually contains.
- The current delivered price after shipping, tax and promotions.
- Whether the warranty applies in your country.
- Whether refurbished or remaining P2 stock receives the same coverage.
- Compatibility of passthrough, rotary and other accessories.
- Whether the P2S offers a meaningful workflow or maintenance improvement for your work.
The US product page displayed $3,999 for a selected standalone configuration when the supplied research was retrieved. Prices, stock, taxes, bundles and model selection change, so treat that as a dated buying signal rather than a permanent MSRP. Check the current product page immediately before purchase.
What the P2 really costs
The machine price is only the starting point. A realistic ownership budget must account for:
- The P2 or P2S itself.
- A stand, riser or suitable load-bearing workbench.
- Exhaust fan, ducting and installation.
- Air assist and cooling supplies.
- Optional filtration where legally and technically appropriate.
- Rotary and passthrough accessories.
- Spare mirrors, lens and other consumables.
- Coolant or approved antifreeze.
- Fire detection and response equipment.
- LightBurn, if selected.
- Shipping, tax and installation.
- Future tube replacement and repair downtime.
- Warranty extension or service coverage.
xTool’s P2 support and service pages also list xToolCare options, including a displayed basic service fee of $299.99 in the supplied research. Coverage, exclusions, eligibility and regional terms must be confirmed for the exact machine at checkout; do not assume a service plan makes every repair free. See xToolCare for P2.
Recommended Free Tools
Alternatives by need
- Lower-cost CO₂ machine: potentially better wattage or bed size per dollar, but often with more alignment, ventilation, setup and third-party-support work.
- High-power diode laser: cheaper and useful for many thin materials, but generally not equivalent to a 55 W CO₂ laser for clear acrylic and thicker nonmetal cutting.
- Fiber laser: the better category for bare-metal marking and engraving, not a replacement for the P2’s wood and acrylic cutting role.
- More open or serviceable CO₂ system: attractive if you prioritize third-party parts and repairability over polished integration.
- Local makerspace or laser service bureau: sensible for occasional projects when ownership, ventilation, maintenance and fire safety cannot be justified.
Final recommendation
Buy the P2 if you need an enclosed CO₂ workflow, work mainly with wood and acrylic, value camera-assisted placement, have proper facilities and can buy the P2 at a clear discount with acceptable regional support.
Buy the P2S instead when it is similarly priced and its verified improvements address your priorities. The P2S is the newer model in xTool’s current product presentation, so the original P2 needs a meaningful price or availability advantage.
Choose another CO₂ machine if you need larger production capacity, industrial duty cycles, easier third-party repair or a different price-to-bed-size balance.
Choose a fiber laser for bare-metal work, a diode laser for a lower-cost entry into lighter-duty engraving and cutting, or a service bureau if your use is occasional.

The P2 is a substantial and convenient desktop CO₂ laser. It can be the last CO₂ machine a particular owner needs—but only when its work area, material range, service model and infrastructure match the owner’s actual operation. That conclusion cannot be guaranteed by the “last one you’ll own” slogan alone.
