Xiaomi’s Smart Fish Tank Can Feed Fish Remotely—but Does It Really Go Six Months Without a Water Change?

Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Fish Tank can feed fish remotely, but its six-month water-change claim is conditional. Here is what the 20-liter tank actually requires, including testing, filter care, stocking and heating limits.

Yes, Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Fish Tank can feed fish remotely—but no, “six months without changing water” should not be read as “leave the aquarium unattended for six months.” The 20-liter freshwater tank automates feeding and some controls, while its five-stage filtration may lengthen the interval between water changes in a lightly stocked, established aquarium. Water testing, pump cleaning, filter replacement and emergency care remain necessary.

The short answer

Yes, Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Fish Tank can automate feeding and let you control some aquarium functions remotely. But the “six months without changing water” claim is not a guarantee that every owner can leave a 20-liter aquarium unattended for half a year.

The six-month figure is best understood as a conditional filtration claim for a lightly stocked, established, properly maintained freshwater aquarium. You still need to test the water, clean the pump, replace filter modules, control feeding and stocking, and perform a partial water change whenever ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature or the fish’s condition indicates that one is necessary.

The Mi Home app is intended to control the smart food hopper and can also control functions such as lighting and water flow, according to Xiaomi’s launch material. The feeder has two documented portion settings of approximately 0.05 g and 0.17 g. Xiaomi’s documentation says the hopper can provide at least 45 feedings; at one feeding every two days, that works out to roughly 90 days of feeding capacity, not six months.

Remote control is useful, but it is not the same as remote supervision. The tank does not provide camera-equivalent visual monitoring or automatically diagnose a leaking aquarium, a dead fish, a failed pump, a blocked intake, a power outage or dangerous water chemistry.

Where the six-month water-change claim comes from

Xiaomi’s launch coverage says the tank can support six months without a water change. The claim is associated with the five-stage rear filter and a self-cleaning, clog-resistant pump design. [c001][c004]

That is a product claim under suitable conditions—not a universal aquarium-care rule. Xiaomi’s own documentation still calls for ongoing maintenance:

  • Replace the physical filter module approximately every three months.
  • Replace biological filter modules approximately every six months.
  • Clean the pump and its intake filter approximately monthly, or sooner if flow weakens.
  • Adjust maintenance frequency for fish size, stocking density and feeding quantity.

A filter can remove particles and support the biological processes that convert toxic waste, but it does not make waste disappear. Fish continue to produce ammonia. Uneaten food and decaying plant material add more organic waste. Water also accumulates dissolved substances that filtration alone may not remove in the same way as a partial water change.

Independent aquarium-care guidance is more conservative. PetMD gives general baseline examples of a 10% weekly or 25% biweekly water change and recommends letting water chemistry determine the schedule. It identifies ammonia above 0.25 mg/L, any detectable nitrite, or nitrate above 20 mg/L as reasons to change water. [c005] The RSPCA emphasizes that clear water is not necessarily safe and identifies 0 mg/L ammonia and 0 mg/L nitrite as safe targets. [c006]

Those thresholds and schedules are general guidance, not a substitute for species-specific advice or a veterinarian. The practical point is straightforward: do not wait six months merely because the water looks clear or the app reports that the pump is running.

Why a 20-liter tank needs conservative care

Small aquariums are less forgiving than large ones. In 20 liters, a small amount of excess food, one dead fish, a clogged intake or a failed pump can change conditions quickly. There is less water to dilute waste, less oxygen reserve and less thermal stability. The RSPCA specifically warns that small volumes can experience faster temperature changes and provide less room for efficient filtration. [c006]

Xiaomi launch coverage reported stocking guidance of:

  • 10–15 fish at an adult size of 5–6 cm;
  • 6–9 fish at an adult size of 6–8 cm; or
  • 3–5 fish at an adult size of 8–12 cm.

These should be treated as Xiaomi’s reported figures, not as a universal stocking standard. Species behavior, adult size, activity level, oxygen demand, temperature, planting, feeding and water chemistry all matter. A cautious owner should stock below the maximum, choose species genuinely suited to a small freshwater aquarium and confirm adult—not juvenile—size before buying fish.

Goldfish and other fish that become large or produce substantial waste are poor choices for this tank. Marine species are unsuitable: the Mijia tank is a freshwater product and does not provide marine-aquarium equipment such as salinity management or protein skimming.

What you still need to maintain it

The tank is low-maintenance, not maintenance-free. A practical setup should include the following:

1. Cycle the aquarium before adding fish

Do not fill the tank and immediately add a full population. The biological filter needs time to mature and establish bacteria that process fish waste. Test the water during setup and follow a fishless cycling method or other responsible cycling plan before stocking. The RSPCA stresses the importance of establishing the aquarium and monitoring its chemistry before and after fish are introduced. [c002][c006]

2. Test the water rather than judging it by appearance

Use a freshwater aquarium water test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and, where appropriate, temperature. Clear water can still contain toxic ammonia or nitrite. Test more frequently during cycling, after adding fish, after illness or death, after a filter problem and whenever fish behave abnormally.

If ammonia or nitrite is detectable, or nitrate is rising beyond the level appropriate for the inhabitants, reduce or stop feeding temporarily as appropriate, identify the cause and perform a properly prepared partial water change. Do not treat the six-month claim as permission to ignore a failed test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Clean the pump and intake

Inspect the pump approximately monthly and sooner if the flow becomes weak or noisy. Waste, plant debris and uneaten food can restrict flow, increase noise, raise operating temperature or stop the pump. Follow Xiaomi’s instructions for removing and cleaning the pump; do not use soap or household cleaners in aquarium equipment.

4. Replace the filter media on schedule

The documentation recommends replacing the physical filter module about every three months and biological modules about every six months, with adjustments for the aquarium’s actual load. Check the exact MYG100 or MYG100U model before buying a compatible MYG100 replacement filter. Generic media should not be assumed to fit, seal correctly or provide the intended flow path.

5. Prepare replacement water correctly

When a water change is needed, use a freshwater aquarium water conditioner or dechlorinator suitable for the replacement water. Match the new water as closely as practical to the aquarium’s temperature and avoid abrupt changes in water chemistry. A small aquarium gravel vacuum can help remove waste from the substrate during maintenance, provided the tool is suitable for the tank’s compact layout.

Petbank Automatic Fish Feeder for Aquarium - 0.1-2g Precise Portion Control
  • Friendly Reminder Before Purchasing: INSTALL THE FEEDER ON THE AQUARIUM FIRST, THEN ADD DRY FISH FOOD. (Do not add food before installation, or the portion size may not be accurate.)
  • Precise Portion Control for Healthier Feeding: This automatic fish feeder features a built-in high-precision weighing component, allowing you to set each feeding portion from 0.1 g to 2 g with an accuracy of about +/-0.1-0.2 g. Whether you keep small tropical fish or other aquarium fish with different feeding needs, you can better control daily portions, help reduce overfeeding, and make feeding routines more consistent and reliable
  • Programmable Timer with Flexible Daily Feeding Plans: Schedule up to 5 feeding periods per day, with 1 to 3 feedings in each period for a more customized feeding routine. This is especially useful for fish that do better with smaller, more frequent meals. It also includes a manual feeding function, so you can feed anytime based on your preset amount without affecting the next scheduled automatic feeding
  • Detachable 230/510 ML Hopper with Low-Food Reminder: The removable food container offers 230 ml and 510 ml capacity options, giving you more flexibility based on your tank setup and feeding schedule. This design gives you more choice for everyday use or short trips away from home. When food runs low, the screen will display "EPY" and flash alternately with the time as a reminder to refill, helping you avoid missed feedings caused by an empty hopper
  • Moisture-Resistant Design Helps Keep Food Dry: This fish feeder automatic dispenser is designed with an auto-opening and auto-closing food door. After feeding is finished, the opening closes automatically to reduce long exposure to humid air, helping keep fish food drier inside the hopper. It works with most pellets, granules, and powder food. For strip food, grinding before use is recommended

6. Control algae and visible waste

Remove algae and accumulated debris when necessary. Xiaomi’s documentation mentions a professional algae scraper or biological algae-control methods. Avoid treatments that could harm fish, plants, beneficial bacteria or invertebrates, and never add a chemical simply because the aquarium looks untidy without checking whether it is appropriate for the inhabitants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature: the important feature the tank does not have

The tank can sense temperature, but it does not heat or regulate the water. That distinction matters for tropical fish. If the selected species requires warmer, stable water, the owner needs a properly sized small aquarium heater with thermostat and must verify that the heater is safe for the tank’s water volume and configuration.

Do not choose heater wattage solely from a generic recommendation. Room temperature, desired water temperature, tank placement, manufacturer instructions and the fish species all affect the choice. Use an independent thermometer to confirm the actual water temperature. Cold-water species may not need a heater, but they still need a stable temperature appropriate to the species.

Can it safely feed fish while you are away?

For short absences, the automated feeder is the product’s most convincing convenience feature. Owners can schedule feeding through Mi Home and, according to Xiaomi’s launch material, adjust feeding remotely. The hopper’s documented portion settings and stated capacity make it possible to automate a modest feeding routine for an extended period.

There are important limits:

  • A programmed feeder can dispense food, but it cannot tell whether fish are eating normally.
  • Too much food can quickly damage water quality in a 20-liter aquarium.
  • The approximately 90-day calculation assumes one feeding every two days and does not mean the fish can be left without other care.
  • The app cannot physically repair a jammed feeder, blocked pump or power failure.
  • A person should check the aquarium during any trip long enough for a fault to become dangerous.

Before relying on the feeder, test it for several days. Confirm that the selected amount is appropriate for the species, that food stays dry and that no food accumulates on the substrate. Arrange for someone to inspect the tank, verify water level and confirm that the pump and fish are behaving normally.

Buying and regional cautions

The tank launched in China in March 2023 at a reported standard retail price of 399 yuan after a 349-yuan crowdfunding price. [c001] That launch price should not be treated as a current worldwide price.

For U.S. buyers, availability is a particular concern. The available research did not verify a current official U.S. Xiaomi retail listing, a reliable U.S. Amazon listing, authorized warranty coverage or region-compatible power accessories. Imported units may involve:

  • different plugs, voltage or adapter requirements;
  • limited local warranty and repair support;
  • shipping damage or difficult returns;
  • Mi Home app-region restrictions; and
  • replacement filter availability problems.

User reports have described China-region configuration requirements, but those reports are anecdotal and should not be presented as a universal rule. Before buying, confirm the exact model number, seller, return policy, power requirements, app compatibility, language support, filter availability and warranty coverage for your country. If a listing does not identify the model as MYG100 or MYG100U, do not assume it is the same tank.

Who should—and should not—buy it?

It may suit:

  • Someone who wants automated feeding and app-based control of lighting or water flow;
  • a freshwater hobbyist keeping a carefully selected, lightly stocked population;
  • an owner willing to test water and perform maintenance despite the smart features; or
  • someone who values a compact, integrated design and can obtain compatible replacement parts.

It is a poor fit for:

  • Anyone seeking a truly maintenance-free aquarium;
  • owners who want to leave fish entirely unattended for six months;
  • large, messy or fast-growing fish such as goldfish;
  • marine-aquarium keepers;
  • tropical fish owners unwilling to install a separate heater; or
  • buyers who cannot verify imported-unit power, app and warranty compatibility.

A safer interpretation of the headline

The headline gets the remote-feeding part substantially right. Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Fish Tank can schedule and remotely trigger feeding and control selected aquarium functions through the Mi Home ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It overstates the water-change part if it implies that the owner can fill the tank, add fish and ignore it for six months. The filtration system may extend the interval between water changes in a suitable, lightly stocked and well-maintained aquarium. It does not eliminate water testing, pump cleaning, filter replacement, responsible stocking or emergency care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Fish Tank really go six months without a water change?

Yes, but only under suitable conditions. The six-month statement is a conditional filtration claim, not a guarantee. Water testing and maintenance may require earlier changes, especially in a small, heavily stocked or overfed tank.

Does Xiaomi’s smart fish tank heat the water?

No. The tank has temperature sensing but no built-in heater or temperature-control function. Tropical species may require a separate thermostatically controlled aquarium heater.

Can you keep saltwater fish in the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Fish Tank?

It is designed for freshwater use. It is not a marine aquarium and lacks equipment for salinity management and other marine-aquarium requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Fish Tank available in the United States?

The model is generally listed as MYG100 or MYG100U. Imported availability, app-region behavior, power compatibility, warranty coverage and replacement-filter availability should be verified before purchase.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Fish Tank is a compact freshwater aquarium with useful automation, not a self-sufficient pet-care system. Buy it for scheduled feeding and reduced routine work—not for the promise of six months without checking water quality or caring for the fish.
