It can detect crying and send a notification through the Xiaomi Home app, while also offering 4K video, night vision, two-way audio, wide pan-and-tilt coverage, local microSD recording, and a physical privacy cover. But it is still primarily an indoor security camera—not a medically validated infant-monitoring system or a replacement for safe-sleep practices and physical checks.
Which Xiaomi camera is this?
The headline most likely refers to the Xiaomi Smart Camera C701 Pro, the newer model listed on Xiaomi’s global home-security camera lineup. It includes a baby-crying detection feature.

Xiaomi’s older Smart Camera C500 Pro also offers baby-crying alerts, but it has a 5MP camera, 3K maximum resolution, and less vertical movement. It should not be described as the newest model without specifying the market and publication date.

The C701 Pro is best understood as a connected indoor security camera with baby-monitoring functions added—not as a dedicated baby monitor with its own parent screen, rechargeable receiver, or physiological sensors.

How baby-crying alerts work
The camera listens for an audio pattern that Xiaomi identifies as baby crying. When the feature detects a qualifying sound, Xiaomi Home can send a push notification to the parent’s phone. The user can then open the live view, check the crib, and speak through the camera’s two-way audio.
Baby-crying detection is disabled by default. On the C701 Pro, Xiaomi’s documented setup path is:
- Open the Xiaomi Home app.
- Select the Xiaomi Smart Camera C701 Pro.
- Open AI features.
- Select Baby crying and enable it.
- Allow Xiaomi Home to send notifications.
- Open Home surveillance settings and confirm that baby-crying alerts are included in the event-notification types.
After setup, test the complete chain: make a controlled crying-like sound near the camera, confirm that an event appears, and check that the phone actually displays an alert while Xiaomi Home is running in the background.

Xiaomi says the C701 Pro’s home-surveillance alert interval can be set to 3, 5, 10, or 30 minutes, with 10 minutes as the default. An alert interval is not the same as guaranteed detection latency. Xiaomi does not publish a guaranteed time from a baby’s cry to a phone notification, so parents should not assume that every brief cry will produce an immediate alert. What the C701 Pro offers parents
Wide, adjustable coverage
The C701 Pro has a dual-camera design with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 5MP telephoto lens. It supports video up to 3840 × 2160, marketed as 4K, and up to 9× hybrid zoom.
Its claimed viewing range is 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically. It also supports ceiling mounting and automatic tracking. This is useful for covering a room, but 360-degree movement does not mean every angle is recorded simultaneously. Automatic tracking can also move the lens away from the crib. For sleep monitoring, parents may prefer a fixed position that keeps the crib in view rather than relying entirely on tracking.
Night monitoring
Xiaomi advertises ultra-low-light full-color imaging and infrared night vision using 940nm infrared LEDs designed to avoid a visible red glow. In very dark conditions, the image may become black and white.

Night vision can help a parent see whether a child is awake or has moved, but it cannot see through blankets or other obstructions and does not guarantee a complete view of the crib. Avoid placing the camera directly opposite windows or reflective surfaces, which can cause glare and overexposure.
Two-way audio
The C701 Pro includes a noise-cancelling microphone and larger speaker for two-way communication through Xiaomi Home. A parent may be able to soothe a child or communicate with another caregiver without immediately entering the room.
That is a convenience, not a safety mechanism. Talking through the camera does not resolve a breathing problem, an unsafe sleep position, or any other situation requiring a physical check.
Local recording without mandatory cloud storage
The C701 Pro supports:
- 16GB to 256GB microSD cards
- FAT32 formatting
- Class 10 or higher cards
- NAS storage
- Cloud storage through a paid subscription
The microSD card and NAS hardware are sold separately. A high-endurance card designed for continuous video recording is a better choice than a basic low-cost card.
Local microSD storage means a cloud plan is not inherently required for basic local recording. Cloud-based features and cloud backup may require payment, and Xiaomi says the actual subscription price is the amount shown in the Xiaomi Home app for the user’s country and region. Do not assume that a plan or price available in one market applies elsewhere.
The limitations that matter most
Crying detection is not clinically validated
Xiaomi describes baby-crying detection as an AI feature, but the supplied Xiaomi materials do not establish independent accuracy testing, clinical validation, or a guaranteed false-positive or missed-alert rate. The camera detects an audio signature; it does not understand why a baby is crying or confirm that the baby is safe.
False alerts may be caused by television or phone audio, loud toys, pets, multiple people talking, echoes, or other household noises. Missed or delayed alerts may occur when crying is brief or quiet, when a fan or white-noise machine masks it, or when the camera, router, phone, or app is offline.

It depends on power, Wi-Fi, and phone notifications
The C701 Pro has no built-in battery and requires continuous 5V/2A power. A power outage stops normal operation unless the camera is connected to suitable backup power.
Remote viewing and phone notifications also depend on a working network connection, Xiaomi Home services, and correctly configured phone permissions. If Wi-Fi fails, do not assume that remote alerts will continue. Xiaomi’s documentation does not establish how every local-recording function behaves during an internet outage, so that behavior should not be promised.
This makes the C701 Pro less resilient than a dedicated baby monitor with a direct local parent receiver. A second trusted adult can receive shared-device alerts, but that still does not remove the camera’s dependence on power, connectivity, and app settings.
No Apple HomeKit support
Xiaomi’s C701 Pro FAQ explicitly says that the camera does not support Apple HomeKit. It supports Alexa and Google Assistant where available, but compatibility can vary by country, language, account region, and hardware.
No baby-specific physiological sensors
The C701 Pro does not appear to provide medical or physiological monitoring such as breathing, heart rate, oxygen level, temperature, or humidity measurement. Parents seeking those functions need to assess dedicated products separately—and should also be cautious about treating consumer sensors as medical devices.

The C701 Pro includes a physical lens cover that can block the camera when privacy is needed. Xiaomi also describes encrypted transmission and local processing for baby-crying detection in its IoT privacy white paper.
Xiaomi says event-triggered videos may be uploaded in encrypted form and retained for a limited period. Those are manufacturer-documented privacy and security claims, not an independent security audit.

Before placing a connected camera in a bedroom:
- Use the physical cover when monitoring is unnecessary.
- Review who has access to the Xiaomi Home account and shared device.
- Disable notification previews if sensitive video or audio could appear on a lock screen.
- Review whether cloud recording is enabled and whether it is actually needed.
- Use a strong, unique account password and keep the app and camera firmware updated.
Safe placement for a nursery
- Keep the camera outside the crib and beyond the child’s reach.
- Secure the camera on a stable surface or appropriate wall or ceiling mount.
- Keep the power cable away from the crib so it cannot be pulled into the sleep space.
- Test the viewing angle at night, not only in daylight.
- Keep the microphone close enough to hear the child but away from fans, speakers, and noisy appliances.
- Avoid windows and reflective surfaces.
- Keep the camera on a strong Wi-Fi signal and away from likely interference sources.
The C500 Pro manual specifically warns that reflective surfaces can damage image quality and recommends a strong wireless signal away from interference such as metal objects and microwave ovens. The same practical placement principles apply to a nursery camera.

Choose the C701 Pro if you specifically want its 4K dual-lens system, 9× zoom, Wi-Fi 6, or 180-degree vertical coverage. The C500 Pro may make more sense if it is substantially cheaper or more readily available in your region.

Who should consider the C701 Pro?
It is a reasonable fit for Xiaomi Home users who want one camera for a nursery, pets, and general home security; parents who want remote phone access; and buyers comfortable configuring app permissions and notification intervals. It is also attractive to people who prefer local microSD recording instead of mandatory cloud storage.
A dedicated baby monitor is the better choice for parents who need a local parent-screen receiver, more resilient monitoring during internet failures, baby-specific sensors, or less dependence on smartphone notifications. It is also the safer choice for anyone expecting medically validated or guaranteed cry detection.
Check your region before buying
Xiaomi’s product availability, app labels, cloud plans, assistant compatibility, warranty coverage, and supported features vary by market. Before buying an imported unit, confirm the exact model number, the Xiaomi Home region required for setup, local warranty support, and whether cloud services work in your country. The fact that a product appears on Xiaomi’s global website does not establish U.S. availability or availability in every other market.
Verdict
The C701 Pro’s baby-crying alert is a genuinely useful feature on a versatile indoor camera. Its strong image specifications, wide movement range, night vision, two-way audio, local storage, and physical privacy cover give parents several practical reasons to consider it.
