The reported starting price was 119 yuan, with sales scheduled for May 15, 2024. However, Xiaomi’s currently indexed global documentation identifies a closely related product as the Xiaomi Motion Sensor 2S and confirms motion, micro-motion, light sensing, Bluetooth and battery specifications without clearly naming millimeter-wave hardware.
That distinction matters. The device is not a standalone Wi-Fi occupancy system, and “three years” is a test-condition estimate rather than a guaranteed replacement interval. Its usefulness depends heavily on gateway compatibility, room layout and the Xiaomi Home/Mi Home region in which it is used.

What Xiaomi launched
Contemporary reports called the product the People Presence Sensor; the Chinese name, 小米人在传感器, translates more literally as Xiaomi human-presence sensor. Chinese launch coverage reported a starting price of 119 yuan, while another retail report listed approximately 129 yuan. The difference may reflect launch pricing, retailer pricing or a later price change.
Xiaomi’s current regional product pages use names such as Xiaomi Motion Sensor 2S, including model XMPIR02SGXS. The available indexed documentation does not conclusively establish whether that product is the same hardware as the 2024 Chinese launch, a regional renaming or a successor. This article therefore uses “2024 human-presence sensor” for the launch announcement and “Motion Sensor 2S” when referring to current official specifications.

As of the latest available information, Xiaomi’s global pages document the related Motion Sensor 2S but do not establish a current U.S. retail price or broad U.S. availability. A China-market device may require a China-region Xiaomi Home/Mi Home account, may not appear in another region’s app and may not carry local warranty support.
Contemporary launch coverage described the device as using low-power millimeter-wave radar. Xiaomi’s currently indexed global pages, however, emphasize “motion and micro-motion detection” rather than publishing a radar frequency, chip or performance data. The millimeter-wave description should therefore be treated as reported launch information, not as a fully documented global specification.
Presence detection is different from ordinary motion detection
A conventional PIR motion sensor usually reacts to changes caused by a moving person. It can turn a light on when someone enters, but it may stop reporting once that person sits still.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A presence sensor attempts to detect a person who remains relatively stationary. Xiaomi’s official Motion Sensor 2S documentation refers to small movements, including actions such as leaning and waving, and says it can report human-body status more accurately. That makes it potentially more useful for lighting and room-occupancy automations than a basic motion-only sensor.
There are important limits. The available Xiaomi documentation does not establish reliable detection of breathing, heartbeat, sleep or occupancy through walls. Nor is there evidence that the device identifies individual people. “Human presence” means detecting occupancy or movement—not recognizing who is in the room.
What millimeter-wave sensing could add
Millimeter-wave radar can, in principle, detect finer movement and stationary human presence than a simple PIR sensor. That is why the technology is often used for occupancy sensing in rooms where people may sit, work or sleep without making large movements.

For Xiaomi’s 2024 launch, that technology claim comes from secondary reporting. The available official global Motion Sensor 2S material does not publish:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- transmit power or radar-chip information;
- radar field-of-view details;

Consequently, buyers should not assume that the sensor provides the same continuous, fine-grained occupancy performance as every mains-powered mmWave sensor. Room geometry, placement and the device’s monitoring settings still matter.

Is the three-year battery claim realistic?
Xiaomi rates the Motion Sensor 2S for approximately three years from one CR2450 battery, but its support documentation gives unusually important assumptions. The estimate is based on:
- an ambient temperature of 25°C;
- 1,600 human-motion triggers per day; and
- 300 light-intensity reports per day.
Xiaomi warns that shortening the monitoring interval or increasing activity can substantially reduce battery life. A busy hallway, frequently occupied office or heavily automated living room may therefore use more power than the test scenario. Cold or hot conditions, repeated communication attempts and a weak Bluetooth connection can also affect service life.

- STHS34PF80 Features: Voltage Range: 1.7 to 3.6V, Current Draw: 10µA, Interfaces: I²C or SPI, Optical wavelength: 5 to 20µm, Range: 4m (objects 70 x 25cm² in size) Built-in Detection Algorithms: Identify stationary objects, Distinguish between stationary and moving objects.
- These features enable the sensor to work as a human presence and motion sensor in different applications such as alarm systems, anti-intruder systems, smart lighting, and room occupancy. The sensor can operate in multiple lighting conditions and is unaffected by visible light or other bands thanks to the 5 to 20µm optical band-pass filter. The STHS34PF80 has output data rates between 0.25 to 30Hz and an available single-shot, accessed through its I2C/SPI interface.
In practical terms, “three years” should be read as an estimated maximum under specified conditions, not as a guaranteed replacement schedule. Xiaomi says the app exposes battery status, with low-battery status indicated below 5% and depleted status below 3%. The official FAQ also confirms the CR2450 requirement and battery-related troubleshooting guidance. See Xiaomi’s battery and gateway FAQ.
Light sensing and smart-home automations
The documented Motion Sensor 2S includes an ambient-light sensor covering approximately 0 to 1,000 lux. That enables rules that consider both occupancy and brightness—for example, switching a light on only when someone enters a dark room.
Potential Xiaomi Home/Mi Home automations include:
- turning lights on when movement or presence is detected;
- turning lights off after departure;
- sending an alert;
- switching off a compatible appliance; and
- using illuminance data to adjust a rule.
Chinese coverage also reported a 24-hour illuminance curve in the Mi Home app. The sensor does not directly control every appliance, however. Each automation requires compatible Xiaomi/Mijia devices, a supported gateway and a rule exposed by the app in the relevant region.
Gateway and connectivity requirements
The sensor uses Bluetooth 5.0/BLE, not direct Wi-Fi. Xiaomi says a compatible Bluetooth gateway or Bluetooth Mesh gateway is required for remote app access and for linking the sensor to other smart-home devices.
Xiaomi’s guidance puts normal gateway operating distance at roughly 10–15 metres, depending on obstacles, and notes that Bluetooth may penetrate only one or two walls in some situations. Another regional page advises keeping the gateway within approximately 10 metres during setup.
This creates an extra buying consideration. Someone who already owns a suitable Xiaomi gateway may find the sensor convenient and inexpensive. Someone starting from scratch must include the gateway, regional app support and compatible automation devices in the total cost.

Placement advice and likely failure points
The advertised seven-metre range and 130-degree angle are manufacturer specifications, not an independent room-coverage test. Furniture, partitions, wall materials, temperature and the subject’s position can change practical performance.
- Place it where the monitored area is visible to the sensor. Use the adjustable mount—up to 90 degrees vertically and 360 degrees horizontally—to aim across the room rather than into a blocked corner.
- Keep important occupancy areas inside the higher-sensitivity zone. Xiaomi describes that zone as approximately three metres, with motion detection extending to about seven metres.
- Check the gateway before blaming the sensor. A distant gateway or multiple walls can cause delayed reports, pairing failures or missed automations.
- Test the exact automation. Confirm whether the rule responds to motion, micro-motion, presence status or departure, since those events are not interchangeable.
If the sensor misses a stationary person, possible causes include poor aiming, furniture obstruction, a long monitoring interval, use outside the higher-sensitivity area or an automation configured for motion only. If the battery drains unusually quickly, check activity levels, reporting frequency, temperature, Bluetooth reliability and the quality and age of the CR2450 cell.
For pairing problems, Xiaomi recommends checking that the battery insulation strip has been removed, the battery is charged, Bluetooth Mesh support is enabled on the gateway, the sensor is close enough and excessive walls are not blocking the signal.

The device is not presented as a camera, so it does not require a camera view of the room. That may appeal to users who want occupancy-triggered lighting without video. It is still not accurate to call it categorically “privacy-safe.” Xiaomi’s Mi Home privacy information says that connected human sensors may involve environmental and sensor-status information, including whether someone has passed by.
Users should review their Xiaomi account, app, cloud and region settings before connecting the sensor to a wider smart-home system. The product detects activity or occupancy; it does not provide evidence that it recognizes a person’s identity.

The 2024 Xiaomi human-presence sensor makes the most sense for an existing Xiaomi/Mijia household that already has a compatible Bluetooth gateway and wants battery-powered lighting or occupancy automations. Its compact size, light sensing and micro-motion claims are useful advantages over a basic PIR sensor.
Best Value
- [Customizable Settings] Adjust the detection distance, ambient light levels, and delay time to suit your needs, ensuring high sensitivity for added convenience.
- [Energy Efficiency] By only turning on lights when necessary, this switch significantly reduces energy consumption, leading to lower electricity bills.
- [Intelligent Light Control] The presence sensor utilizes microwave induction technology to detect human movement, micromovement, and breathing for energy-saving light control.
- [ Design] Made of plastic, this sensor is built to withstand various environments for long-lasting use. easy to install on walls, ceilings, or any space in the house.
- [Wide Application] Ideal for bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, basements, and more, providing convenient and efficient lighting control.
It is a weaker fit when:
- the buyer needs a standalone Wi-Fi device;
- the room requires proven continuous detection of completely motionless occupants;
- there is no compatible Xiaomi gateway nearby;
- the buyer needs local warranty and guaranteed regional app support; or
- a mains-powered sensor would be easier to maintain in a busy room.
Mains-powered mmWave sensors may be better for continuous occupancy detection but require permanent power. PIR sensors are often simpler and cheaper but generally do not handle still occupants as well. Camera-based systems may offer richer monitoring at the cost of greater privacy and network considerations.
Price and availability
Chinese launch reporting placed the price at roughly 119–129 yuan. That is historical China-market pricing, not a current U.S. MSRP. Xiaomi’s indexed global Motion Sensor 2S page documents the product category and specifications but does not establish a current U.S. retail price or broad U.S. availability.
Importing a China-region Xiaomi device can involve region restrictions, account changes, unavailable automations, gateway incompatibility and limited warranty support. Confirm that the sensor appears in the intended Xiaomi Home/Mi Home region and that the gateway and controlled devices are supported before buying.

Verdict
Xiaomi’s People Presence Sensor is an interesting combination of presence-style detection, light sensing, Bluetooth connectivity and coin-cell operation. The strongest headline claims need qualification: millimeter-wave sensing is reported by launch coverage but not clearly detailed in Xiaomi’s indexed global documentation, and the three-year battery figure is a controlled estimate rather than a promise.
For Xiaomi ecosystem users with the right gateway and a suitable room layout, it could be a practical upgrade over a basic motion sensor. For everyone else, region support, gateway cost and the level of stationary-presence performance actually required are more important buying factors than the three-year number.
