Wyze Window Cam watches your yard from inside your home—but glass still has limits

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, Wyze has a camera designed to monitor outdoor areas from inside a window. The Wyze Window Cam attaches to the interior side of window glass, uses a design intended to reduce glare, and can record locally to a microSD card. It is a practical option for renters, apartments, porches, driveways, and other locations where mounting a weather-exposed camera is difficult.

It is not, however, a complete replacement for an exterior security camera. The view still depends on the window, nearby power and Wi-Fi, and conditions such as reflections, screens, condensation, and nighttime lighting.

What is the Wyze Window Cam?

The Wyze Window Cam is a wired security camera that mounts against the inside of a window and points outdoors. Unlike an ordinary indoor camera placed on a sill, it is specifically designed for window-facing monitoring. Its purpose is to let you watch a porch, driveway, walkway, garden, or section of yard without putting the camera body outside.

Wyze introduced the product on November 25, 2025, according to a launch post on the company’s community forum. The camera’s main appeal is installation flexibility: you can keep the device indoors and avoid exterior drilling, outdoor wiring, weather exposure, and some forms of vandalism or theft.

  • No Tools, Just Stick It — The secure hook-and-loop fastener mounting sticker makes installation simple. Just peel, stick, and plug in the camera. We've included an extra-long 10 ft micro USB to USB-A cable with cable clips for tidy mounting.
  • Upgraded Color Night Vision — Our iconic Color Night Vision just leveled up. Powered by an f1.0 aperture lens and an advanced BSI sensor, it delivers day-like clarity from just a whisper of moonlight or starlight.
  • Specialized Design to Reduce Glare — Glare beware. Wyze Window Cam is specially designed to prevent glare on the inside of your window. A bigger mounting sticker removes reflections to give you the clearest footage possible through a window.
  • Motion and Sound Detection — Get instant motion alerts pushed straight to your Wyze app the moment something moves. Want fewer false alarms? Add a Security Plan (Cam Plus from $2.99/mo) for smart detection that tells people, pets, vehicles, and packages apart.
  • 24/7 Local Recording — Record your full timeline around the clock to a microSD card (up to 512GB, sold separately) and scrub back through every minute anytime in the Wyze app. Want event clips backup in the cloud? Add the optional Security Plan (Cam Plus from $2.99/mo) for 14-day people, pets, vehicles, and packages event video history stored in the cloud.

That convenience comes with a compromise. The camera can only see what a suitable window can see, and the glass remains part of the optical path. A window camera is therefore best understood as a window-monitoring solution, not a weatherproof outdoor camera.

Wyze lists these features for the Window Cam:

  • Upgraded color night vision.
  • A design intended to reduce glare when viewing through glass.
  • AI-powered motion detection and alerts.
  • 24/7 local recording to a microSD card.
  • Bluetooth-assisted setup.
  • Time-lapse recording.
  • Support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT.

These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not an independent performance test. In particular, “designed to reduce glare” does not mean that every window will produce a reflection-free image.

How installation works

The Window Cam needs an indoor power outlet and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. It is not a battery-powered camera, so the installation location must be close enough to power and within usable router range.

Wyze’s quick-start guide gives this basic installation sequence:

  1. Clean and dry both the inside and outside of the window glass.
  2. Apply the mounting sticker to the window.
  3. Remove the protective film from the camera lens.
  4. Press the camera firmly onto the sticker.
  5. Keep the camera straight rather than angled.
  6. Connect it to a nearby indoor power outlet.
  7. In the Wyze app, select Add Device > Cameras > Wired Cameras > Wyze Window Cam.

Before applying the adhesive, check the entire intended view. A camera that is slightly too high, low, or far to one side may miss the driveway or walkway you actually need to monitor.

Renters should also check their lease and consider whether adhesive residue or mounting restrictions are an issue. The installation is less permanent than drilling into an exterior wall, but it is not necessarily risk-free for every type of glass or finish.

Read Wyze’s Window Cam quick-start guide.

The biggest issue: glass, reflections, and screens

Placing a camera behind glass creates problems that do not affect a normally mounted outdoor camera. Indoor lamps, ceiling lights, television screens, and other bright objects can reflect off the window and appear in the camera image. Dirt, moisture, condensation, tinted glass, reflective coatings, and storm-window configurations can also reduce clarity.

Traditional infrared night vision can be especially troublesome through glass. Infrared light emitted by a conventional camera may reflect back from the window and produce a bright haze or obscure the outdoor scene. Wyze’s older guidance for ordinary cameras describes this limitation. The Window Cam is purpose-built for window use and advertises upgraded color night vision, but that should not be treated as a guarantee that every nighttime installation will be clear.

For the best chance of a usable image:

  • Keep the lens pressed flush and straight against clean glass.
  • Turn off or move lamps near the window.
  • Keep indoor lights behind the camera as low as practical at night.
  • Clean both sides of the glass before mounting.
  • Test the view after dark, not only during daylight.
  • Check the image after rain, temperature changes, and condensation.

Wyze specifically says not to place the Window Cam behind a screened window because the screen can reduce video quality. A permanent screen is therefore a major reason to choose a different camera location or an exterior model.

Wyze’s guidance on conventional camera night vision through glass.

Does it need a Wyze subscription?

The Window Cam supports local recording to a microSD card, which gives buyers an option besides relying entirely on cloud storage. A compatible card must be purchased and installed, and recording must be configured in the Wyze app.

Local recording does not automatically mean every feature is subscription-free. Wyze also promotes cloud-related capabilities such as full-length recordings and AI detection. The company’s compatibility table lists the Window Cam as compatible with Cam Plus, Cam Unlimited, Cam Unlimited Pro, and Wyze Home Monitoring.

The practical distinction is:

  • Basic camera access: viewing and camera control through the app.
  • Local storage: recording to a separately purchased microSD card.
  • Cloud features: recording history and other functions may depend on the selected Wyze plan.
  • AI detection: do not assume every detection category is included without a subscription.

Wyze’s plan compatibility page confirms that the camera works with those plans, but plan pricing and the exact feature set can change. Check the current terms before treating a subscription as part of the camera’s total cost.

Window Cam versus a normal indoor camera behind glass

You can point many indoor cameras through a window, but an improvised setup often places the lens several inches behind the glass, at an angle, or beside reflective indoor surfaces. That can create more glare, distortion, and obstructions.

The Window Cam’s dedicated mounting arrangement is intended to keep the camera aligned closely with the window. That does not remove every optical problem, but it addresses some of the basic weaknesses of placing a camera on a shelf or windowsill.

Window Cam versus an outdoor Wyze camera

Consideration Wyze Window Cam Wyze Cam Outdoor v2
Placement Inside, attached to window glass Mounted outdoors
Power Indoor wired power Wire-free battery operation
Weather exposure Camera remains indoors IP65 weather-resistant design
Advertised night vision Upgraded color night vision 1080p color night vision
Motion detection AI-powered detection listed by Wyze PIR motion detection
Coverage Limited to what the window can see Can be positioned where coverage is needed
Displayed price $34.98 for one $99.99 add-on camera; $119.99 starter bundle

The Outdoor v2 is the stronger choice when the camera must sit in the yard, cover an area hidden from windows, or operate without a nearby indoor power outlet. Wyze lists a 130-degree field of view, up to six months of battery life, PIR detection, two-way audio, support for up to four cameras per base station, and optional solar-panel charging.

The Window Cam is the more convenient and inexpensive option when a window already provides the right angle and the user wants to avoid exterior installation.

What about Wyze Cam OG?

The Wyze Cam OG is another alternative for users willing to mount a camera outside. Wyze lists it as an indoor/outdoor wired camera with an IP65 rating, 1080p color night vision, a built-in spotlight, and a siren. The displayed prices on the Wyze Global page consulted were $44.99 for one camera and $84.99 for two.

Cam OG can provide stronger physical deterrence and more flexible placement, but it requires an exterior mounting location and an appropriate power arrangement. That makes it less attractive for renters or homes where outdoor wiring is difficult.

Who should consider the Window Cam?

The Window Cam makes the most sense when most of these statements are true:

  • The target area is clearly visible from a window.
  • You mainly need a porch, driveway, walkway, or near-house view.
  • You cannot or do not want to drill into an exterior wall.
  • An indoor power outlet is nearby.
  • The window is unscreened and can stay reasonably clean and dry.
  • You value local microSD recording.
  • You can accept that nighttime performance depends on the specific window and lighting.
  • You want a low-cost camera for temporary or supplemental monitoring.

It is particularly appealing for renters, apartment dwellers, and homeowners who want to monitor an entrance without exposing a camera to rain, snow, extreme temperatures, or easy outdoor tampering.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Who should choose an exterior camera instead?

Choose an exterior model when you need:

  • Coverage of a side yard, rear yard, or area not visible through a window.
  • Perimeter monitoring rather than observation near the house.
  • A camera positioned away from the building.
  • Battery, solar, or otherwise wireless outdoor placement.
  • Reliable outdoor PIR detection.
  • A spotlight, siren, or clearly weather-rated enclosure.
  • Nighttime identification that cannot tolerate reflections or window variables.

A single Window Cam should not be expected to cover an entire yard. Coverage depends on window height, viewing angle, distance, fences, trees, vehicles, and the camera’s field of view. It may be excellent for awareness at a porch or driveway while being unsuitable as the only device protecting a large property.

Common installation problems and fixes

Glare or indoor reflections

Turn off nearby lights, move lamps away from the window, clean both sides of the glass, and confirm that the camera is flush and straight against it.

Wyze Offical: Window Mount for Wyze Cam OG, v3, v3 Pro, v4
  • View through a window without glare or reflection. (Need to set "Night Vision Mode" to "OFF" in camera settings).
  • Turn Wyze Cam OG, v3, v3 Pro or v4 into a window-mounted security camera.
  • Monitor outside without needing to run wiring outdoors.
  • Take advantage of Color Night Vision even through glass.

Poor nighttime video

Test after dark with different indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. Color night vision may improve the image, but it cannot guarantee that reflections, window coatings, or darkness will not affect the result.

A screen appears in the image

Do not mount the camera behind a window screen. Wyze says screens negatively affect video quality.

Condensation or dirty glass

Clean and dry the glass before installation, then check it again when the weather changes. Moisture between panes or frequent condensation may make the location a poor fit.

Weak Wi-Fi

Test the connection at the intended window. If it is unreliable, reposition the router or use a suitable mesh access point rather than assuming the camera itself is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

False motion alerts

Trees, shadows, headlights, pedestrians, and passing vehicles can trigger notifications. Adjust motion zones and sensitivity to concentrate on the area that matters.

No nearby power outlet

Use a safe indoor power arrangement that does not create a trip, pinch, or window-closing hazard. Do not place an indoor power adapter outdoors.

Privacy and security considerations

Keeping the camera indoors can make physical tampering more difficult, but it does not eliminate privacy responsibilities. A window-facing camera may record a public sidewalk, a shared apartment walkway, neighboring property, or people passing by.

Point the camera only at the area you need, use privacy controls or motion zones where available, and avoid unnecessary views into neighboring homes. Local laws regarding recording and audio differ by location, so seek jurisdiction-specific advice if the camera will monitor shared or public areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local microSD recording can reduce reliance on cloud storage, but the camera still connects to a Wyze account and app when network features are enabled. Use a strong unique password, enable two-factor authentication where available, keep the app and firmware current, and review camera-sharing permissions regularly.

Bottom line

The Wyze Window Cam is a smart solution to a specific installation problem: monitoring an outdoor scene while keeping the camera inside. Its low displayed price, indoor installation, local microSD recording, and window-focused design make it attractive for renters, apartments, porches, and driveways.

Its limits are equally important. It needs indoor power and Wi-Fi, cannot see around the building, should not be placed behind a screen, and may still experience reflections or reduced nighttime clarity. Buy it when the window provides a good, unscreened view and you want simple protected installation. Choose a properly positioned outdoor camera when you need broad yard coverage, wireless placement, strong perimeter protection, or truly weather-rated operation.
