Wyze Palm Lock brings palm-vein scanning to an affordable smart deadbolt

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Wyze Palm Lock is an available Wi-Fi smart deadbolt that unlocks when you hold an uncovered palm 3–7 inches from its reader. It uses near-infrared scanning to recognize vein patterns beneath the skin, while also offering PIN, app, voice-assistant, and physical-key access. Wyze lists the model at $129.98 as of August 2026.

It is an appealing low-cost way to try contactless biometric entry, but it is not a universal smart-lock upgrade. Check your door dimensions, avoid installations behind a storm door, and note that Apple HomeKit and Matter are not supported according to independent testing.

What is Wyze Palm Lock?

Wyze Palm Lock (model WPLCK1) is a black, Wi-Fi-connected smart deadbolt for most standard U.S. doors with a single-cylinder deadbolt. Wyze lists a September 2025 release date, so in 2026 it should be treated as an existing product rather than a newly launched device. See the official product page for current availability and pricing.

The defining feature is palm-vein recognition. Instead of reading a fingerprint on the surface of a sensor or identifying a face with a camera, the lock uses infrared light to inspect the vein pattern beneath the palm. Wyze says the biometric profile is encrypted and stored locally on the lock rather than uploaded to its cloud.

The exterior assembly measures 6.14 × 2.89 × 1.28 inches, while the interior assembly measures 7.16 × 2.93 × 1.18 inches. The lock weighs about 4 pounds, carries an IP53 weather-resistance rating, and is listed by Wyze with an ANSI/BHMA Grade 3 security rating claim.

How palm-vein unlocking works

During use, open your hand and hold it approximately 3–7 inches from the illuminated reader, centered near the white palm icon. The scanner uses near-infrared light to read the pattern of veins under the skin and compares it with the enrolled profile stored on the device.

Wyze says the system is designed to work with wet, dirty, weathered, or scarred hands. That is a manufacturer claim, not a published independent performance guarantee for every condition. Gloves block the scan, so anyone wearing them must remove them or use a different entry method.

A palm scan is primarily an unlocking action. To lock the door, you can use the interior latch, the app, a voice assistant, or automatic locking after the lock’s gyroscope detects that the door has closed.

How to enroll a palm

  1. Open the Wyze app.
  2. Tap your Wyze Palm Lock.
  3. Go to Settings > Access and Sharing.
  4. Select the user.
  5. Choose Add Left Palm or Add Right Palm.
  6. Hold the open palm 3–7 inches from the screen, centered near the white palm icon.
  7. Wait for the scan to finish. Wyze says enrollment can take up to 30 seconds.

You can enroll both hands if you want a backup. The lock supports up to 50 registered palm scans. To replace one, delete the existing scan and enroll it again. Wyze’s setup article contains a documentation error in its deletion instructions, referring to “Wyze Lock Bolt” instead of Palm Lock; users should follow the Palm Lock controls shown in their current app version.

Entry methods and fallback access

Wyze describes the product using both “five unlocking methods” and “six total entry methods.” The difference appears to be whether the manual interior latch is counted separately. In practical terms, Palm Lock provides these access or locking options:

Wyze Palm Lock, Smart Door Lock with Palm Vein Recognition, Keyless Entry Smart Locks for Front Door, Keypad, Auto Lock, Dual Battery, Wi-Fi, Works with Alexa & Google, BHMA, IP53, Mechanical Key
  • Contactless Palm Vein Recognition — Wyze Palm Lock uses a highly secure biometric technology that reads the unique vein pattern beneath your palm. Simply hover your hand to unlock—no touch needed. Faster and more reliable than fingerprints.
  • Dual-Battery System with Emergency Charging — A 6-month main battery is backed by a 2-week secondary battery. If both drain, use the integrated USB-C port and any power bank for an emergency charge—ensuring you're never locked out.
  • Peace of Mind with Auto Lock — A built-in gyroscope detects the angle and movement of the door in real time. Once it senses the door has closed then it automatically locks, preventing false or jammed locks.
  • Secure & Shareable Access Codes — Create up to 50 unique or one-time guest codes on the illuminated keypad. Our Anti-Peep Technology keeps every code secure, allowing you to add extra digits before or after your real PIN to prevent snooping.
  • Smart Battery Saver — Wyze Palm Lock is equipped with millimeter wave radar, the same used in self-driving cars. It scans for the presence of a person (not just movement) and only “wakes up” the lock when a person is detected.
  • Palm scan: Contactless biometric unlocking with an uncovered hand.
  • Touchscreen PIN: Enter a stored access code on the illuminated keypad.
  • Anti-peep PIN entry: Type extra digits before or after the real code to make it harder for someone nearby to observe the code.
  • Wyze app: Lock or unlock locally or remotely over Wi-Fi.
  • Alexa and Google Assistant: Control the lock through supported voice ecosystems.
  • Mechanical keys: Use the included physical keys if electronic access fails.
  • Interior latch: Operate the lock manually from inside.

Wyze says the lock supports up to 50 access codes, including scheduled and one-time guest codes. Voice unlocking has a practical privacy drawback: a third-party review noted that users must speak the PIN aloud, which may expose it to anyone within earshot. That is a situational security concern, not proof that the lock is inherently insecure.

Installation and door compatibility

Palm Lock is intended to replace an existing single-cylinder deadbolt, but “standard deadbolt replacement” does not mean every door will fit. Before buying, verify:

  • Door thickness.
  • Backset and bore-hole dimensions.
  • Single-cylinder versus double-cylinder deadbolt design.
  • Clearance around the exterior reader and interior housing.
  • Whether a storm door sits close to the lock.
  • That the door already closes, aligns, and latches smoothly.
  • Any landlord, HOA, lease, or local building restrictions.

A deadbolt that binds because of poor alignment can cause unreliable locking, excess motor strain, and faster battery drain. Correct the door fit before blaming the electronics. Wyze specifically discourages storm-door installations because repeated radar wakeups and interference can substantially reduce battery life.

The Wyze app must be version 3.7 or later. Compatible phones include Android 10 or later and iOS 16 or later. Wireless connections include Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi 6. The lock’s size is also a design consideration: Tom’s Guide’s review described it as noticeably bulkier than more premium-looking alternatives.

Battery life and emergency entry

Wyze rates the main battery for up to six months, based on roughly 10–20 lock or unlock events per day. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed service interval. Traffic, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather, storm-door interference, radar wakeups, and frequent app use can change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lock also includes a backup battery. Wyze documentation varies between approximately one to two weeks and two weeks, so treat two weeks as an upper estimate rather than a promise. If both power sources become unavailable, a USB-C emergency power connection can temporarily power the lock from a power bank. The charging cable is not included.

Keep the physical key somewhere accessible outside the home, not inside the locked house. Before leaving for an extended trip, charge the main battery, confirm that the backup battery is installed, and test at least one non-biometric entry method.

Security and biometric privacy

Local storage is the strongest privacy feature in Wyze’s design. Wyze says palm scans, passcodes, and access history are encrypted and stored on the lock, and that it cannot access the palm-vein data. Keeping the biometric template off the cloud reduces the consequences of a remote account breach involving cloud-stored biometric information.

It does not remove every risk. A buyer should still ask what happens to enrolled palm data when the lock is returned, sold, or discarded; whether every scan can be deleted before transfer; what protections apply if someone gains physical access to the device; and how account, app, and firmware security affect remote unlocking.

Wyze uses strong marketing language about biometric security, but the reviewed official material does not publish independently verified false-acceptance or false-rejection rates. Claims such as “cannot be copied” or “more accurate than fingerprints” should therefore be understood as manufacturer claims, not measured universal guarantees.

Smart-home compatibility

Palm Lock works with the Wyze app, Alexa, Google Assistant, Wyze automations, and selected Wyze video doorbells. Wyze lists control from the live view of Video Doorbell v2, Video Doorbell Pro, and Duo Cam Doorbell.

The ecosystem limitation is important: Tom’s Guide reported that the lock does not support Apple HomeKit or Matter. That makes it a weaker fit for Apple Home users or households building around Matter-first interoperability. Remote control also depends on the lock’s network and account connection, while local palm, PIN, and key access provide different fallback paths during an internet outage.

Who should buy Wyze Palm Lock?

  • Wyze users who want lock and camera features in one ecosystem.
  • Households that find fingerprint readers inconvenient or unreliable.
  • Buyers who specifically want contactless palm-vein entry at a relatively low price.
  • Homeowners who want built-in Wi-Fi remote access without a separate bridge.
  • People who value multiple backups, including PINs, keys, a backup battery, and USB-C power.

Who should skip it?

  • Apple HomeKit or Matter users who need native integration.
  • Renters who need an inside-only retrofit that leaves the exterior hardware unchanged.
  • Anyone with a nonstandard, double-cylinder, or poorly aligned deadbolt.
  • Homes with a storm door close to the lock.
  • Buyers uncomfortable storing biometric templates, even locally.
  • Anyone expecting palm recognition to work through gloves.
  • Shoppers who prioritize a compact, discreet, premium-looking design.

Alternatives worth considering

Philips 5000 Series Wi-Fi Palm Recognition Lock

The Philips 5000 Series is the closest conceptual alternative: it also uses near-infrared palm-vein recognition, PIN access, a mechanical key, built-in Wi-Fi, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Its published requirements specify 35–50 mm door thickness, a 38 or 54 mm cross-bore, and a 60 or 70 mm backset. The official page lists four CR123A batteries and no emergency-power option, making Wyze’s backup battery and USB-C charging meaningful advantages for emergency planning. The reviewed Philips page did not provide a reliable current price.

See Philips’ published specifications before comparing fit and power requirements.

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

August takes the opposite approach: it is an inside-mounted retrofit that preserves the existing exterior lock and keys. It supports Apple HomeKit/Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, remote control, guest keys, and optional keypad entry. August lists a starting price of $229.99 and battery life of up to three months on its official page.

It is a better fit for renters with permission to replace the interior hardware or Apple Home households, but it does not provide biometric palm entry. Visit the official August Wi-Fi Smart Lock page for current terms.

Wyze Lock Bolt

Wyze Lock Bolt is the simpler Wyze alternative. It uses fingerprint recognition, claims up to 12 months of battery life, and offers Bluetooth-only app control within roughly 16 feet. Unlike Palm Lock, it does not provide built-in Wi-Fi remote access, palm-vein scanning, or the same advertised voice-assistant functionality. It may be the better choice when long battery life and fingerprint access matter more than remote control.

Wyze compares the two products in its Palm Lock and Lock Bolt support guide.

Verdict

Wyze Palm Lock is best understood as an affordable gateway to palm-vein entry, not as a universally superior smart lock. Its $129.98 listed price, built-in Wi-Fi, multiple fallback methods, backup battery, and USB-C emergency power give it a strong practical case when the door is compatible and the household already uses Wyze.

The compromises are equally clear: a bulky design, conditional battery estimates, biometric privacy questions, storm-door restrictions, and no Apple HomeKit or Matter support. If those limitations fit your home, Palm Lock offers a distinctive feature that conventional fingerprint, keypad, and app-only locks do not. If ecosystem compatibility or discreet installation matters more, an August retrofit or another non-biometric lock may be the better construction and smart-home fit.
