What happened at the Fairmont Winnipeg construction site
Police responded at about 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, to the hotel construction site in downtown Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Free Press reported. The hotel was closed and operating as an active construction site.

The Free Press, attributing the information to a provincial spokesperson, reported that the worker was employed by Kepsco Construction and was fatally injured when a “portion of an overhead canopy collapsed during asbestos abatement work.” That description is an account attributed to the spokesperson, not a published finding from an investigation.
Global News also published a video item on October 10 describing a worker’s death after a canopy collapsed at the site; its written description provided no further details.

For context only, the Winnipeg Free Press reported, citing Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba data, 15 work-related deaths in Manitoba in 2025 and 22 in 2024. Those province-wide totals do not explain what happened at the Fairmont site.
