Work Sharp’s RMX folding knives use a replaceable pivot cartridge so an owner can set the knife up as either a manual folder or a push-button automatic. The launch lineup included three blade-and-steel combinations, in full-size and compact versions. The announcement dates to 2025; its prices and availability are historical, not confirmation of current stock or offers.
How the RMX interchangeable pivot works
RMX stands for “Replaceable Mechanism Exchange.” Work Sharp’s design centers on a removable pivot cartridge: users can configure the knife for manual opening or push-button automatic operation. The company said the changeover uses an included 2mm hex tool. The American Knife and Tool Institute’s May 29, 2025 article reproduced the launch description.
Work Sharp’s current Reverse Tanto product and manual page lists a manual pivot installed and an automatic pivot cartridge with torsion spring in the box. It also specifies a 2mm hex wrench for the pivot screw and a magnetic key for installing the automatic pivot. That listing is for the Reverse Tanto; included parts may differ on other RMX models, so check the model-specific package details.

The 2025 announcement described three configurations. The differences below are specifications from Work Sharp, not results of comparative testing.

Choosing a configuration: what the specifications do—and don’t—tell you
Manual or push-button automatic
The cartridge makes the opening mechanism configurable. The launch material does not provide an independent test comparing the two setups or establish which is better for a particular job. Automatic-knife rules vary by jurisdiction; check the laws where you live and intend to carry or use one before configuring or carrying the automatic setup.

Full-size or compact
The lineup distinguishes full-size models from the Compact, but the cited launch description gives no dimensions or weight comparison. It supports identifying the Compact as the smaller-positioned option, not quantifying how it differs in pocket space, handling, or cutting performance.
Reverse Tanto or Drop Point; CPM-3V or M390
The announcement pairs the Reverse Tanto with CPM-3V and the Drop Point options with M390; it also calls the full-size M390 Drop Point a saber grind. Those are useful identifiers when comparing product listings, but the announcement supplies no controlled comparison of edge retention, toughness, sharpening ease, or overall performance. There is no evidence here for an objective winner between the models.

Handle, assembly and included service parts
Work Sharp describes the handle as integral magnesium, cast and precision-machined. The company says components are sourced globally, with final assembly, sharpening, tuning, and hand inspection at its Ashland, Oregon headquarters. These are manufacturer descriptions rather than independently verified production or performance findings.
The Reverse Tanto listing additionally names an Oops Kit containing a pivot O-ring, pivot screw, clip screw, lock button spring, extra torsion spring, and pivot bearing. Confirm the contents on the listing for the exact variant you are considering rather than assuming every RMX package includes the same kit.

What Work Sharp announced about price and availability
Work Sharp’s launch release, distributed by EIN Presswire on May 5, 2025, gave a launch price of $139.95 for the full-size RMX and $129.95 for RMX Compact, and said limited availability would begin June 6, 2025 at Blade Show and online. These are dated launch details only; they do not establish today’s price, inventory, or where a particular model can currently be purchased.
