Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWear a full face shield whenever the lathe is running, start slowly, and stop if the work or machine vibrates. These habits—along with a supported tool, a secure setup, and sharp cutting edges—help make woodturning safer and more controlled. The American Association of Woodturners (AAW) recommends a shield that covers the lower face and jaw.
Set up safely before switching on
Make the safety check part of every start, whether you are turning a spindle or a bowl. AAW advises tying back long hair and avoiding gloves, loose clothing, and jewelry that could catch in rotating parts.
- Secure the work. Check that the workpiece is properly mounted and that the chuck, faceplate, or other mounting hardware is secure.
- Lock the supports. Tighten the tool-rest and tailstock locks where applicable. Remove any chuck key or adjustment bar before starting.
- Check clearance by hand. With the lathe off, turn the workpiece through a full rotation by hand to confirm it clears the tool rest, bed, and other parts of the machine.
- Position yourself out of the red zone. Stand clear of the work’s direct line when switching on, then observe the startup before moving into your working position.
Control speed and respond to vibration
Begin at a low speed, especially with a workpiece that is not yet balanced. Increase speed only when the setup runs smoothly and the work is secure. If the lathe or workpiece vibrates, slow down or stop and investigate rather than trying to work through it.
AAW’s lathe-safety page gives example spindle speeds by stock diameter as a guide, not a universal setting. Follow your lathe manual and qualified instruction; do not apply a spindle-speed chart automatically to bowls or irregular, unbalanced blanks. Workpiece shape, balance, mounting, and the machine all matter.

Keep the tool supported and the rest close
Rest the tool on the tool rest before bringing its edge into contact with the wood. Keep the rest close to the work to provide support, while maintaining enough clearance for the workpiece to rotate freely. Turn the lathe off before repositioning the rest, then rotate the work by hand again to check clearance before restarting.
Wear protection for the hazards in the shop
Eyes and face
Use a full face shield whenever the lathe is on. AAW emphasizes that it should cover the lower face and jaw—not just the eyes. The shield is a basic protective layer, not a reason to stand in the workpiece’s line of travel or to ignore an unstable setup.

- Package Quantity: get ready to experience enhanced safety with 3 pieces of work masks included in one package; For ease of transportation, the product requires installation and the PC panels can be bent in an arc
- Reliable PC Material Construction: quality is an assurance with the anti fog protective full shield on your face; It is made primarily of PC material, known for its outstanding strength, durability, and resistance to impact; This reliable and sturdy material not only ensures the longevity of it but also harnesses its ability to protect you adequately
- Safe and Adjustable Design: the grinding face mask shield offers the advantage of adjusted fitting; Use the ratchet knob on the side of the shield to adjust the headband until it's snug and comfortable; Thanks to the design, your shield will stay in place
- Sweat Absorbent Feature: the inside of the forehead is equipped with a sweat absorbent sponge, which makes the face mask shield for grinding can be worn without stuffiness or tightness on the head while being lifted, and the aluminum wrapped face screen can be freely turned up and down 180°, making it convenient for observation during construction operations; This keeps you comfortable for a longer period, maintaining a dry, clean, and clear vision
- Wide Application: our full face mask shield is not restricted to a particular setting or activity, ideal for grinding, carpentry, DIY tasks, yard work, hedge trimming, car repairs, cutting metal and so on
Dust and noise
Choose respiratory protection and hearing protection according to the task and the hazards present. When turning or sanding produces dust, use respiratory protection alongside dust collection and ventilation; do not treat one measure as a replacement for the others.
Learn sharpening instead of working around a dull tool
Keep cutting tools sharp and learn how to maintain them safely. AAW says sharp tools are safer than dull ones and encourages turners to seek hands-on help from an accomplished turner where possible. Sharpening instruction can help you understand the edge and grind your technique calls for; a jig may assist with a particular setup, but it is not required for every turner or a substitute for learning safe technique.

For structured learning, AAW’s sharpening resources include an “Introduction to Sharpening” identified as appearing in the February 2023 issue of American Woodturner. The AAW Safety Guidebook contents also cover topics such as safe turning speeds, first cuts, dust collection, a first bowl gouge, and sharpening jigs.

AAW’s Getting Started page lists safety resources and notes that a beginner class supplies the lathe and tools. A class offers a practical way to learn setup, tool control, and sharpening with guidance rather than relying on written instructions alone. AAW describes its safety guidebook as free and also identifies a printed safety book.
