A good all-in-order storage bin system is not just a row of boxes. It is a small piece of built-in carpentry: a rigid carcass, repeatable cubbies, removable bins that do not bind, safe anchoring, durable edges, and enough strength for the actual contents. Built right, it can organize toys, shoes, pantry overflow, craft supplies, sports gear, garage tools, or workshop offcuts for years.

For most homeowners, the best version is a 3- to 6-bin plywood cubby unit, 36 to 72 inches wide, 16 to 18 inches deep, and 18 to 42 inches tall depending on whether it will act as a bench, wall rack, or storage tower. In 2026, a basic DIY 3-bin plywood organizer typically lands around $90 to $180. A larger 6- to 9-bin cubby unit usually runs $175 to $350 in materials. A heavier garage or shop rack can run $150 to $500 depending on plywood thickness, 2x framing, casters, and anchoring hardware.

On our job sites, we treat storage like finish carpentry with structural consequences. The unit has to look clean, but it also has to survive being pulled, kicked, loaded unevenly, cleaned, and occasionally climbed by a child who should not be climbing it. That means heavy bins go low, tall units get anchored to studs, plywood edges get sealed, and garage installations respect fire-separation walls.

Start With the Storage, Not the Box

The most common mistake is building attractive bins before measuring what they need to hold. Shoes, toys, canned goods, paint supplies, hand tools, and lumber scraps all behave differently. A bin for kids’ blocks can be light and shallow. A bin for cordless tools needs a thicker bottom, lower placement, and easier hand clearance.

Criusia Storage Cubes - 11 Inch Heavy Duty Fabric Closet Bins for Shelves, Cube Organizer - 8 Pack Collapsible Decorative Storage Bins Baskets for Organizing Clothes Blankets Toys (Grey)
  • 【QUALITY STRUCTURE】These cubby storage bins are made from tough non-woven fabric with excellent sewing to make them last, heavy cardboards added at the sides and bottom to make this storage bins rigid enough to hold a heavy load.
  • 【FIT WITH MOST OF FURNISHING】Measuring 11x11x11 inches, our 8 pack grey clothes storage bins could fit perfectly with most of cube organizer, shelf, closet, from bedroom to playroom to laundry room, to store clothes, linens, toyes, books etc.
  • 【EASY GRIP】These fabric storage cubes have two sewn-in handles on the sides for easy room-to-room carrying or removing on a shelf. With the reinfored handles, they could work well as drawers, open-top bins, or storage baskets for shelves.
  • 【COLLAPSIBLE DESIGN】These cube storage bins could be fold flat for compact use when not in use.
  • 【SPACE SAVING】These square storage bin is dorm room essentials and apartment essentials for closet storage and organization, making all rooms neat and clean.

For everyday household storage, 12 to 18 inches of depth is usually better than 24 inches. Deep bins become clutter traps and get heavy fast. A 16-inch-deep mudroom bin is easy to pull out and scan. A 24-inch-deep bin under a bench can work for bulky seasonal gear, but it should not be the default for daily-use items.

Before cutting plywood, measure the whole operating area: baseboard projection, door swing, closet trim, outlet locations, floor slope, vent covers, return air grilles, cleanouts, water shutoffs, and the space needed to pull a bin out fully. For a hallway or mudroom, leave at least 36 inches of walking clearance where possible. In a garage, do not block electrical panels, appliance service clearances, or mechanical equipment access.

Recommended Bin Sizes

For a reliable modular plan, repeat one bin width wherever possible. Replacement bins are easier to build later, and sheet goods yield more cleanly. A practical starting point is a cubby opening 15 inches wide by 13 inches high by 16 inches deep. Build the removable bin about 14 3/4 inches wide by 12 3/4 inches high by 15 1/2 inches deep, leaving a 1/8-inch to 3/16-inch reveal around the front so paint buildup, seasonal movement, and slight wall irregularities do not cause binding.

For shoes, use lower bins around 8 to 10 inches tall. For toys and sports gear, 12 to 14 inches tall works well. For pantry overflow, keep bins shallower, often 10 to 14 inches deep, because dense food storage gets heavy quickly. For shop scraps, use open-top bins with 3/4-inch sides and a supported bottom, and keep them low.

2026 Cost Guide for Wood Storage Bins

Material pricing is still worth checking before you buy. Lumber and plywood remain price-sensitive in 2026. NAHB reported framing lumber prices up 1.4% week over week on July 24, 2026, up 3.1% from one month earlier, and nearly flat year over year. FRED’s Producer Price Index for plywood was 290.979 in June 2026, up from 272.226 in February 2026, showing a meaningful rise earlier in the year.

Retail sheet-good prices vary widely by region and grade. Home-center examples show 4×8 OSB around $12, 15/32 sheathing around $26, and 23/32 cabinet-grade plywood around $45 before local taxes and regional pricing. For furniture-like bins, avoid using OSB as the visible finished material. It is useful in construction, but it is rough on hands, edges, and painted finishes. Cabinet-grade plywood costs more, but it is usually the better value for indoor storage.

Project Type Typical Size DIY Material Range, 2026 Best Use
Basic 3-bin organizer 36-48 in. wide, 16-18 in. deep $90-$180 Toys, shoes, pantry overflow, craft supplies
6- to 9-bin cubby unit 48-72 in. wide, 16-18 in. deep $175-$350 Mudroom, playroom, laundry room, closet
Heavy-duty garage rack 48-96 in. wide, 18-24 in. deep $150-$500 Tools, paint, sports gear, shop supplies
Custom carpenter-built storage Site-fitted built-in Low hundreds to $2,500-$6,000+ Finished built-ins, trim tie-ins, irregular walls

Plastic bins often cost $8 to $25 each for small to medium lidded bins. Wood bins cost more in time and material, but they can be sized exactly to the opening, repaired, refinished, labeled cleanly, and built to match the room.

Materials and Tools

For a dependable household unit, use 3/4-inch plywood for the outer carcass, fixed shelves, vertical dividers, and any high-load bins. For small light-duty bins, 1/2-inch plywood can work. Use 1/4-inch plywood or hardboard only for light-duty bottoms captured in grooves or supported by cleats. A 1/4-inch panel nailed to the underside of a bin is not enough for heavy tools, canned goods, or hardware.

If the project is indoors and uses plywood, MDF, or particleboard, buy TSCA Title VI compliant material. EPA rules require hardwood plywood, MDF, and particleboard sold in the United States to be labeled compliant for formaldehyde emissions. This matters most in bedrooms, playrooms, closets, nurseries, and other enclosed spaces.

A solid material list for a 6-bin unit includes two sheets of 3/4-inch plywood, one sheet of 1/2-inch plywood for bin sides if you want lighter removable bins, wood glue, #8 or #10 wood screws, brad nails or pin nails for assembly help, edge banding or solid wood edging, 120- and 180-grit sandpaper, primer, paint or clear finish, labels or pulls, and anchoring hardware. For wall attachment, use a ledger strip, French cleat, L-brackets, or anti-tip straps fastened into studs or blocking.

Essential tools include a circular saw with a straightedge guide or table saw, drill/driver, countersink bit, square, clamps, tape measure, sander, stud finder, level, and a brad nailer if available. A pocket-hole jig is useful but not required. If you do not own a table saw, use project panels or have the home center make rough sheet cuts, then trim final dimensions at home with a guided circular saw.

Plan Dimensions for a 6-Bin Unit

This plan builds a practical 6-bin organizer about 49 1/2 inches wide, 33 inches tall, and 17 inches deep. It works well in a mudroom, playroom, laundry room, pantry wall, or garage. The layout uses two rows of three cubbies. Each opening is roughly 15 inches wide by 14 inches high by 16 inches deep after allowing for plywood thickness and assembly tolerances.

Use 3/4-inch plywood for the carcass. Cut two side panels at 33 by 17 inches, a top and bottom at 48 by 17 inches, one center horizontal shelf at 48 by 16 1/4 inches, and four vertical dividers at about 15 3/8 by 16 1/4 inches, adjusting for your exact layout and joinery. Add a 1/4-inch plywood back if the unit is freestanding or needs racking resistance. If the unit will be permanently attached to a wall, a full back is optional, but a top rear cleat is still useful.

For each removable bin, target an outside size around 14 3/4 inches wide, 13 1/2 inches tall, and 15 1/2 inches deep. Use 1/2-inch plywood for lighter bins or 3/4-inch plywood for heavy-duty bins. A good bin is slightly smaller than the cubby, has a durable front edge, and includes either a routed hand pull, a metal pull, or a simple finger notch.

Bottom Thickness

For toys, hats, gloves, and light craft supplies, a 1/4-inch bottom captured in a groove can work. For shoes, pantry goods, pet supplies, or hardware, step up to 1/2-inch plywood. For tools, paint supplies, fasteners, or lumber scraps, use 3/4-inch plywood or support the bottom with cleats on all four sides. On our crews, we do not trust a thin bottom for anything dense. The repair is always more annoying than the small material savings.

Step-by-Step Build Sequence

First, break down the plywood with the cleanest face oriented outward. Label each part as you cut it. Keep matching dividers stacked together so small measurement differences do not multiply across the unit. Sand exposed faces to 120 grit before assembly; it is faster and cleaner than sanding inside cubbies later.

Second, assemble the outer box. Glue and screw the sides to the top and bottom, checking for square before the glue sets. Use clamps or temporary brad nails to hold alignment while driving screws. Pre-drill and countersink screw locations to avoid splitting plywood edges.

Third, install the center shelf and dividers. A story stick helps here: mark the repeated cubby widths once on scrap and transfer those marks instead of remeasuring each opening. Keep the openings consistent, but do not fight over a 1/32-inch difference that will be hidden by the reveal around the bins.

  • Easy to clean: you can use a wet cloth to clean the fabric and the bins will always keep the shape.

Fourth, add the back panel or rear cleats. A 1/4-inch plywood back glued and nailed around the perimeter makes the unit much more resistant to racking. If you are building a wall-anchored unit, install a 3/4-inch plywood cleat behind the top rail so screws can hit studs cleanly.

Fifth, build the bins. Glue the sides to the front and back, then install the bottom in grooves or on cleats. Do a dry fit before finish. A good bin should slide in with light hand pressure and sit with a clean, even shadow line around the face.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sixth, break sharp edges. Storage bins get handled constantly, so ease every exposed edge with sandpaper or a small roundover bit. Seal all exposed plywood edges, especially end grain and MDF edges. Raw edges absorb moisture and paint unevenly, and they wear out faster in mudrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and garages.

Anchoring, Safety, and Load Planning

Any tall, narrow, or top-heavy storage unit should be anchored to studs. That includes mudroom towers, kids’ cubbies, garage racks, and any unit with pull-out bins that shift weight forward. CPSC clothing storage rules are written for dressers and similar furniture, but the practical hazard is the same: a child can pull, climb, or overload the front of a unit. Keep heavy contents low and avoid ladder-like layouts in children’s areas.

Do not rely on drywall anchors for heavy garage storage. Fasten ledgers, cleats, or brackets into studs or structural blocking. For a typical 16-inch-deep cubby unit, use at least two stud connections near the top, with #10 or structural screws long enough to penetrate framing after passing through the cleat and drywall. For heavy garage racks, use a continuous ledger and multiple stud connections.

Load capacity depends on plywood thickness, shelf span, fastener type, support spacing, and how the weight is distributed. A 3/4-inch plywood shelf spanning 15 inches between dividers is much stronger than the same shelf spanning 36 inches unsupported. Keep dense loads in smaller cubbies and avoid wide, unsupported shelves for paint cans, books, fasteners, or power tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Garage and Permit Notes

Most small freestanding storage bins do not require a permit. Simple wall-mounted garage shelves often do not require one either, but local rules control. A permit question becomes more likely when storage is built in as part of a larger remodel, affects framing, changes electrical or mechanical access, supports unusual loads, or is attached to a garage-to-house separation wall in a way that compromises required protection.

In attached garages, be careful with penetrations in the wall or ceiling separating the garage from the house or attic. If you fasten through drywall into studs, use proper fasteners and seal penetrations where required by local code. Do not cut large openings, remove rated drywall, bury junction boxes, block panels, or cover required access points. If the project is in a jurisdiction with specific garage separation requirements, confirm the local interpretation before building a permanent rack.

For sheds and detached accessory structures, permit thresholds vary by city and county. A bin rack inside an existing shed is usually different from building a new shed or adding structural storage lofts. When in doubt, call the local permit counter with dimensions, attachment method, and location. A five-minute check can prevent a bad surprise during a sale or insurance claim.

Finish Choices That Hold Up

Painted plywood is the most forgiving finish for a utility storage system. Use primer on raw plywood edges, sand between coats, and apply a durable enamel or cabinet-grade waterborne finish. For clear finishes, use a water-based polyurethane or hardwax-style finish suited to the room. Kids’ toy storage should use fully cured, low-odor finishes and smooth edges with no sharp pulls or snag points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In damp garages, basements, laundry rooms, and mudrooms, seal all faces and edges before final assembly when possible. Plywood can tolerate normal humidity swings, but raw edges wick moisture. Add plastic glides, leveling feet, or a sealed base if the unit sits on concrete. For garage units, consider leaving a 1/2-inch air gap at the floor or setting the unit on treated sleepers where moisture is a concern.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense when the unit is freestanding or lightly built in, the wall is reasonably straight, the storage loads are ordinary, and you can work safely with sheet goods. A careful homeowner can build a 3-bin organizer in a weekend. A 6- to 9-bin unit usually takes one to two weekends once sanding, finishing, and installation are included.

Hire a pro when the storage ties into existing trim, must fit between uneven walls, needs a painted built-in finish, carries heavy garage loads, requires blocking, affects fire separation, or is part of a larger mudroom or laundry renovation. Custom carpenter-built storage can start in the low hundreds for simple utility shelving, but larger built-ins commonly run $2,500 to $6,000 or more because of site fitting, finish carpentry, painting, trim integration, and local labor rates.

The practical middle ground is to DIY the bins and hire out the permanent built-in carcass or wall anchoring. That keeps the visible structure straight and safe while still saving money on repeatable box construction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not build the bins before confirming the finished cubby openings. Paint, edge banding, and slightly out-of-square assembly can steal the clearance you thought you had. Keep a 1/8-inch to 3/16-inch reveal around removable bins.

Do not put heavy items in high bins. The unit becomes less stable, and daily use becomes harder. Dense items belong at knee height or below.

Do not use thin unsupported bottoms for heavy contents. A 1/4-inch bottom is for light-duty storage only unless it is captured in grooves and properly supported.

Do not skip edge sealing. Plywood edges and MDF edges take the most abuse. Seal them before they become dirty, swollen, or chipped.

Do not cut or sand composite panels indoors without dust collection, ventilation, and PPE. Sheet goods create fine dust, and clean job habits matter even on small projects.

Final Builder’s Take

A well-built storage bin system is simple carpentry done carefully. Size the openings around the contents, use repeatable dimensions, choose compliant indoor materials, build with real reveals, seal the edges, and anchor anything that can tip. For most homes, a 3/4-inch plywood carcass with removable wood bins is the best balance of cost, durability, and repairability.

If you want the strongest result for the money in 2026, spend less energy chasing the cheapest sheet goods and more energy getting the layout right. A storage unit that fits the room, clears the doors, holds the right weight, and stays fastened to the wall will outperform a prettier box that was never planned for real use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build wooden storage bins in 2026?

A basic 3-bin plywood organizer usually costs about $90 to $180 in DIY materials. A larger 6- to 9-bin cubby unit typically costs $175 to $350. Heavy-duty garage storage can run $150 to $500 depending on plywood thickness, framing, casters, and anchoring hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What plywood thickness is best for DIY storage bins?

Use 3/4-inch plywood for the main carcass, shelves, dividers, and heavy-load bins. Use 1/2-inch plywood for smaller light-duty bins. Use 1/4-inch plywood only for light bottoms captured in grooves or supported by cleats.

Do I need a permit to build garage storage shelves or bins?

Most small freestanding storage bins do not need a permit, but local rules vary. Check with your building department if the unit is permanently built in, affects framing, blocks required access, supports unusual loads, or penetrates garage-to-house separation assemblies.

How do you anchor a wood storage bin unit to the wall?

Fasten a rear cleat, French cleat, ledger, L-bracket, or anti-tip strap into wall studs or structural blocking. Do not rely on drywall anchors for heavy storage. Tall units, kids’ storage, and garage racks should be anchored even if they feel stable when empty.

Are MDF or plywood storage bins better for indoor use?

Plywood is usually better for handled bins because it is stronger at edges and fasteners. MDF can work for painted built-in parts, but edges must be sealed carefully. For indoor composite wood products, use TSCA Title VI compliant material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What size should storage bins be for cubbies?

For general household storage, 12 to 18 inches deep is usually most usable. A good modular cubby opening is about 15 inches wide, 13 to 14 inches high, and 16 inches deep, with the removable bin built 1/8 to 3/16 inch smaller around the front reveal.
