WOOD Magazine describes an 8 × 8 × 12-foot passive-solar lumber kiln and links a four-page plan PDF labeled Issue 70 (June 1994). The magazine’s article page was updated February 27, 2025. The kiln uses sunlight, a clear roof, and fan-driven airflow to dry stacked lumber; capacity and drying time depend on the design, wood, and weather.

What Wood Magazine’s solar kiln is

WOOD Magazine says it constructed an 8 × 8 × 12-foot passive-solar kiln and developed a plan for building one. Its article links to a four-page PDF identified as Issue 70 (June 1994). See the WOOD Magazine article and plan link.

The magazine’s kiln should not be confused with the separate designs in Oregon State University Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension guidance. Those sources explain useful general construction and operating principles, but their capacity figures and details are not specifications for the WOOD Magazine kiln.

How a solar kiln dries lumber

Sunlight enters through a transparent roof and warms a dark interior collector surface. Fans circulate that heated air through the lumber stack, while vents let humid air escape. A baffle helps direct airflow through the stack instead of allowing it to pass over the load. These components work together: the collector supplies heat, circulation carries it through the wood, and ventilation removes moisture-laden air.

Solar Fan, 30W Solar Fan for greenhouses, Small Chicken coops, and pet Houses. IPX7 Waterproof Solar Panel Fan kit
  • Solar Panel Fan Kit-30W features a dual-fan design, requiring no external power source. Driven by solar energy, it actively exhausts hot air and introduces cool air, effectively reducing indoor temperature and humidity, removing dust and odors, and maintaining fresh air. Suitable for various scenarios such as small greenhouses, chicken coops, sheds, pet houses, attics, window ventilation, and camping, it's an ideal solution for ventilation in confined spaces.
  • Solar Exhaust Fan Versatility - The solar fan comes with an 8.2ft foot extension cord and can be installed in greenhouses, chicken coops, sheds, dog houses, window vents, barns, cowsheds, treehouses, attics, and anywhere else, suitable for indoor and outdoor environments.
  • The solar panel fan features a double-layer metal protective mesh design, effectively preventing accidental injury to people, pets, or small animals, while also protecting the fan blades for proper operation. Safety details are carefully considered; even when installed in chicken coops, pet houses, or other areas with human and animal activity, the exhaust fan is designed with safety in mind, giving you peace of mind.
  • Easy Installation – The solar panel and fan are plug-and-play via waterproof connectors. The solar panel has pre-drilled mounting holes for easy mounting on any wall or roof. Only tools are required for installation. All accessories are waterproof, and the fan blades have a metal protective shell, ensuring safe and durable outdoor use.
  • Purchase Notes - This fan has no on/off switch or speed settings—it runs automatically in bright sunlight, with stronger sunlight resulting in a stronger airflow. It has no battery and therefore cannot be used at night or indoors. For best results, place the solar panel in direct sunlight. Suitable for ventilation in small spaces such as greenhouses, chicken coops, pet houses, and window vents.

Capacity and drying time depend on the design

The following figures are estimates for the named extension designs, not guarantees for WOOD Magazine’s kiln or other locations. Oregon State notes that drying time varies with sun intensity, the lumber’s starting moisture, and relative humidity.

Design and source Capacity or drying estimate Important qualification
Oregon State University Extension plan 450 board feet of one-inch hardwood in six weeks or less of good weather; or 600 board feet of two-inch hardwood in 15 weeks. Softwoods typically take half as long. Estimates vary with sun intensity, wood moisture, and relative humidity; these are not predictions for the WOOD Magazine kiln. Oregon State University Extension
Virginia Cooperative Extension / Virginia Tech design 750–1,000 board feet per charge; approximately one month in moderately sunny weather at Blacksburg, Virginia. This is a distinct design and a location-specific weather description, not a general drying-time guarantee. Virginia Cooperative Extension

Plan the collector, roof, and airflow

Set the roof for your location and season

Oregon State recommends a south-facing angled roof and says roof angle is generally tied to local latitude; a steeper angle can improve winter performance. Its sizing heuristic is up to 10 board feet of kiln capacity per square foot of roof area. Virginia Tech’s separate design uses a 45-degree south-facing roof, notes that the optimum angle depends on location and season, and says winter operation may benefit from adding about 10 degrees. Its collector ratio is one square foot of sloped clear roof per 10 board feet of one-inch lumber; the source cautions that this may provide too much heat for thicker oak or too little for fast-drying woods.

  • Easy to Install & Widely Used: No wiring required, just mount the fan on the wall with the included screws and bolts and place the solar panel in direct sunlight. This chicken coop fan can effectively cool down the temperature and can be used in greenhouses, pet houses, sheds, window vents, barns, attics and more.

Choose materials for the design and conditions

The extension guides describe different roof materials for their respective plans: Oregon State lists translucent fiberglass, plastic film, or glass, while Virginia Tech specifies greenhouse-rated corrugated polycarbonate and says two clear roofing layers can help in winter or cool climates. These source-specific options are not interchangeable engineering approvals for every climate or roof load.

Move air through the lumber, not around it

Oregon State’s design uses a plywood baffle and two electric fans near the roof to drive air through the pile; it also recommends raising the kiln off the ground and using screened vents. Virginia Tech’s design likewise uses fan circulation and rear vents. Both approaches depend on directing airflow through the load while allowing humid air to leave.

Load and monitor the lumber to limit defects

  • Use dry stickers between boards, stack boards in uniform layers, and align stickers vertically so the load stays supported while air can move through it.
  • Leave air space around the lumber stack rather than packing boards tightly against the kiln.
  • Select sample boards that represent the wetter or slower-drying material. Weighing samples over time helps track moisture loss; Virginia Tech describes returning weighed samples to the stack.
  • While learning the process or drying lumber thicker than one inch, Oregon State recommends daily monitoring. Follow the safe drying rate appropriate to the species and thickness: drying too quickly can cause checking, splitting, and other defects.

Oregon State’s guide describes estimating moisture content by oven-drying small sample sections at 215°F. That temperature and procedure belong to its instructions; use the monitoring method and rates specified for the particular plan you are following.

Choose a fan for the kiln’s heat

Oregon State warns that its kiln can exceed 150°F and advises against fans with plastic parts that could melt. Select a fan only after checking its materials and specifications for the heat exposure in the design you build. The source supports a heat-tolerant fan category, not a particular brand or model. Virginia Tech notes that powering fans with solar energy increased construction cost by one-half to two-thirds when its described kiln was built; that is a historical, design-specific comparison, not a current cost estimate.

Before choosing between plans

Compare the intended load and wood thickness, collector area, local sun and humidity, seasonal operating conditions, airflow and vent arrangement, and how you will monitor moisture. Also decide whether fans will use grid or solar power. The extension plans illustrate why these choices matter: a collector ratio that suits one lumber load or climate may overheat another or dry it too slowly. Use the construction details and operating rates for the specific plan you adopt rather than combining dimensions or performance estimates from different designs.
