WOHN A/S, a Danish startup, is developing modular tiny homes made with 3D-printed material that the company describes as upcycled waste plastic and wood. Its current website lists 20 m² and 40 m² homes and sets out plans for student and holiday-home availability from 2027; those dates are company expectations, not confirmed delivery records.
What WOHN is building
WOHN’s approach is to use waste-derived material in modular housing components rather than print a conventional house in place on a building lot. A Technical University of Denmark (DTU) report published on 10 October 2022 described a 20 m² design printed in three sections: a front, a back, and a shell incorporating the roof, floor and walls. DTU reported that printing those modules took less than two days at that stage of development. The company’s current site describes 20 m² and 40 m² homes, but does not establish that every current or future unit follows the 2022 design or production schedule. DTU’s 2022 account provides the dated production details.
Materials in the reported 2022 design
DTU said the printing material combined recycled plastic and sawdust. Wood-wool made from wood waste was used for insulation. The report also describes development changes as WOHN gained experience, including measures to protect the material from ultraviolet exposure, such as a possible roof cover and UV coating on the front and back. These are details of the reported design, not a specification for all homes now offered.
When WOHN says homes may be available
WOHN’s current website says discussions are ongoing with Danish campuses and expects its first student homes to be ready for tenants by spring 2027. The company says preorders for holiday homes have started, with delivery expected from late 2027 onward. These are the company’s stated plans, not independently confirmed opening or delivery dates. The site positions student and holiday homes as initial uses within a broader flexible-housing approach. WOHN’s current site is the source for its sizes and availability plans.

What the environmental and cost claims establish
WOHN’s site claims a construction CO₂ footprint more than 90% lower than that of conventional concrete-and-wood homes, and says each 20 m² home binds four tonnes of waste material. The site also presents a 15-tonne CO₂-savings figure per 20 m² home. DTU’s 2022 report quoted founder Morten Bove making the 15-tonne claim. The reviewed pages do not provide a lifecycle-assessment method or enough detail to independently verify these figures, so they should be understood as company claims rather than established comparative results.
DTU also reported in 2022 that WOHN then expected its homes to cost approximately one-third less than an equivalent conventional home. That was a development-stage expectation, not a current quote, published price or verified cost comparison.

Material testing and building approval
DTU said it helped test WOHN’s plastic-based building material, including its mechanical strength. Researcher Yang Zhang explained that heating and reprocessing plastic can shorten polymer chains and affect strength; additives may help compensate. A change to a locally sourced additive would require new testing, according to the report. DTU described testing as intended to establish whether the material and construction methods met relevant standards, but its 2022 account does not establish current certification, code approval or the results of later tests.
That qualification matters for construction: recycled feedstock and additives can vary, and performance demonstrated for one composite should not be assumed for another. The destination country’s building requirements and the specific material formulation also matter. A project team would need to establish applicable approvals and test evidence for the unit and location being considered.

How WOHN compares with another recycled-plastic housing approach
Australia’s Jindi 3D illustrates a different system, not a WOHN variant or commercial partner. Its site describes a 32 m² modular home with a printed form made from recycled plastic, coated with fiber-reinforced high-performance cement, and a vermiculite-filled wall cavity. The distinction is important: WOHN’s 2022 account describes a plastic-and-wood composite and wood-wool insulation, while Jindi’s published description includes a cement-coated printed form. Jindi 3D’s site describes that Australian project.

For a real project, the relevant questions include the full wall build-up, weather and UV protection, insulation performance, local code compliance, module expansion options and whether performance claims have a published assessment method.
