A 3-speed single-phase motor cannot be wired from a generic diagram. The correct connection depends on the motor’s exact make and model, its lead or terminal labels, its nameplate, and whether it uses a capacitor, a reversing arrangement, or a voltage speed-control method. The safe route is to identify the motor, obtain the diagram that matches it, and only then make any connection. This article explains why the “three-speed” label alone does not identify a wiring scheme, what to record before you disconnect anything, and when to stop and call a qualified electrician.
Why a generic three-speed wiring diagram does not exist
The phrase “3-speed single-phase motor” describes a performance feature, not a wiring layout. Two motors with the same number of speeds can be built with entirely different internal connections, and a diagram that works for one can damage the other.
Published material shows how easily the label misleads. Moratto’s “Electrical Features” page includes a three-speed connection summary, but that summary is for a three-phase motor. Its single-phase diagrams concern capacitor motor arrangements, which is a different construction (Moratto, “Electrical Features”). A three-speed heading on one page does not transfer to the other.
Cantoni Group’s single-phase catalogue separates connection diagrams into standard capacitor motors, reversible motors, and motors adapted for voltage speed control. Each category has its own diagram logic (Cantoni Group, “General Information — Connection diagrams”). Your motor belongs to one of these families, and only its own diagram tells you which.

Nidec US Motors organises its connection-diagram index by motor type, with separate entries for single-phase and triple-rate motors. Searching by the motor’s actual type, not by speed count, is the practical way to find the right page (Nidec US Motors, “Connection Diagrams”).
What to record before you touch any lead
Gather these details first. Without them, no diagram can be confirmed as correct for your machine.

- Safe & Durable: Tested with CSA certification. A sturdy steel frame, fast heat dissipation and compatible keyed shaft for longtime usage.
- Manufacturer and full model or part number, copied exactly from the nameplate or the motor’s data label.
- Nameplate values: rated voltage, frequency, full-load current, and any rotation or duty marking. Photograph the plate.
- Every terminal and lead label, photographed as found, before anything is disconnected. Colour alone is not a reliable identifier.
- The equipment’s wiring diagram, and whether a control board, selector, or external switch is part of the circuit.
- Capacitor markings, if fitted, together with the capacitor type and ratings the diagram specifies.
Each of these items narrows the diagram search. A nameplate photo alone rarely settles the question, because the wiring is determined by the construction the diagram describes.
Diagram families and what they change
The table below uses the three categories that Cantoni Group identifies. Where the reviewed source does not describe a detail, the cell says so rather than guessing.

| Diagram family (per Cantoni Group) | What the diagram is specific to | What you must confirm before wiring |
|---|---|---|
| Standard capacitor motor | Lead arrangement and capacitor connection for a single-phase capacitor motor. Moratto’s single-phase diagrams fall in this group. | Capacitor type and rating shown on the diagram, and whether your motor has a capacitor at all. |
| Reversible motor | Lead configuration that allows rotation direction to change. The reviewed source does not describe the full layout. | Whether your motor’s leads match the reversible diagram, and that the motor is fully stopped before any direction change (see the reversal section below). |
| Voltage speed-control motor | Motor adapted for speed changes through voltage control. Detailed connection steps are not stated in the reviewed source. | Whether the speed control is a separate controller or built into the equipment, and the controller’s own wiring instructions. |
Speed selection and reversal
Speed selection
Do not assume that low, medium, and high leads are interchangeable taps, and do not substitute a generic selector switch. The three-speed example available from Moratto describes a three-phase motor arrangement, so it cannot be repurposed for a single-phase machine.
Reversal
Reversing depends on the motor’s lead configuration. Oriental Motor gives separate instructions for single-phase induction motors with three leads and those with four leads, and it advises changing direction only after the motor has stopped (Oriental Motor, “I want to run an induction motor in forward and reverse. How should I wire it?”). Those lead-specific instructions apply only to motors that match that lead count. Applying them to an unidentified three-speed motor is not a safe shortcut.

How to get the correct diagram
- Write down the manufacturer, model, and part number from the nameplate, and photograph the plate in full.
- Photograph all terminal and lead labels as found, before disconnecting anything.
- Contact the motor manufacturer or the equipment supplier with the model number and request the wiring diagram for that exact model.
- Check the diagram’s motor type against your nameplate and your lead count. If the type or the number of leads does not match, the diagram is not yours.
- Confirm the capacitor type and rating the diagram specifies, if the motor has a capacitor.
- If any part of the circuit involves a control board or selector that is not described in the diagram, stop and seek the equipment supplier’s guidance.
Safety before any work
Isolate the supply at its source and lock it out before removing covers or disturbing leads. Confirm the circuit is dead with a tested instrument before touching any conductor. These are standard electrical practices, and they apply regardless of which diagram you end up using.
Schneider Electric UK’s FAQ on connecting a direct-on-line starter to a single-phase motor states: “Installation of any moving or motorised industrial equipment should only be carried out by qualified persons familiar with electrical and machine safety requirements.” The same page says the installer remains responsible for applicable safety requirements, local legislation, directives, circuit protection, and personnel protection (Schneider Electric UK, “How do I connect a direct on line (DOL) starter to a single phase motor?”).

When to stop and call a qualified electrician
- The motor has no legible nameplate, or the model cannot be matched to a manufacturer diagram.
- The lead count or lead labels do not match the diagram you have.
- The motor is part of industrial or machine equipment with a control board, selector, or interlock you cannot trace.
- The motor has a capacitor whose markings are missing or do not match the diagram’s specification.
- Any lead is damaged, scorched, or unidentifiable after removal of covers.
Once the motor is identified and its diagram is confirmed, the wiring itself is usually a short job. Getting that identification right is the part that takes care.
