Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A wireless home theater removes most long speaker and signal runs, but it is not cable-free. The TV normally connects to a soundbar or hub by HDMI ARC/eARC (or optical), every powered speaker still needs an AC outlet, and wireless rear speakers and subwoofers usually communicate through a proprietary radio link or Wi-Fi. Choose a soundbar package for the simplest installation, a modular ecosystem for gradual expansion, WiSA for separate wireless speakers, or a wired AV receiver when maximum flexibility and upgradeability matter.
What “wireless home theater” actually means
A wireless home theater sends television and movie audio to some or all speakers without running speaker cable across the room. It can mean a soundbar with a wireless subwoofer, a complete soundbar/rear-speaker package, a networked ecosystem such as Sonos, a WiSA transmitter with separate speakers, or an AV receiver that supports wireless endpoints.
It does not normally mean Bluetooth speakers scattered around the room. Bluetooth is useful for casual music and sometimes basic TV audio, but purpose-built systems use synchronized proprietary links, Wi-Fi, or WiSA for multichannel playback.
The cable and power reality
TV HDMI eARC/ARC → soundbar or wireless hub → wireless rears and subwoofer
↘ AC outlets required
- AC power remains necessary for the soundbar, subwoofer, and each rear speaker.
- The TV usually needs an HDMI ARC/eARC or optical cable.
- Ethernet may be useful during setup or as a fallback on networked systems.
Which type should you buy?
| System | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Soundbar only | Small rooms and dialogue improvement | Virtual surround, limited bass and height |
| Soundbar + wireless subwoofer | More impact without rear speakers | No discrete rear-channel envelopment |
| Soundbar + subwoofer + wireless rears | Most buyers seeking cinema-like surround | Rear outlets and manufacturer lock-in |
| Modular ecosystem | Gradual expansion and multiroom music | Higher total cost, app and network dependence |
| WiSA system | Separate speakers without long signal cables | Compatibility and availability require careful checking |
| Wired AVR | Enthusiasts, many sources and long-term upgrades | Speaker-wire installation |

Expandable ecosystems
Sonos can begin with a Beam (Gen 2) at an observed US price of $499 or Arc Ultra at $1,099 (prices checked August 18, 2026), then add a Sub Mini ($499), Sub 4 ($899), and compatible Era 100 or Era 300 rears. Complete bundles observed on Sonos’s US site ranged from about $2,806 to $3,185. Prices and promotions change; review the current lineup and bundle page. Sonos is attractive for multiroom music and staged purchases, but components are model-specific and network-dependent.
LG Sound Suite
LG’s H7 soundbar, M5/M7 wireless speakers and W7 subwoofer use a modular approach that can scale toward a stated 13.1.7-channel Dolby Atmos FlexConnect configuration. Support depends on the exact speaker combination and LG TV year/model; verify the compatibility requirements before buying. LG’s availability announcement does not establish a universal package price.

Sony and WiSA
Sony’s BRAVIA Theater range spans soundbars, subwoofers and wireless rears, so confirm the exact package contents and HDMI features. WiSA is designed for high-definition multichannel links between compatible transmitters and speakers; consult its speaker directory and verify current transmitter compatibility rather than assuming every TV supports it.
Checks before you order
TV and HDMI
- Locate the television’s single HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC; other HDMI ports may not return audio.
- Prefer eARC for higher-bandwidth and lossless formats when the TV, soundbar and source all support them.
- Inventory consoles, disc players, streamers and PCs. A soundbar may have only one HDMI input.
- For gaming, verify HDMI 2.1, 4K/120, VRR, ALLM and required HDR passthrough; Atmos support does not guarantee 4K/120. See comparison context from TechRadar.
Atmos, DTS:X and placement
Check whether Atmos arrives as Dolby Digital Plus from streaming or lossless Dolby TrueHD through eARC, and whether DTS:X is supported. Physical rear speakers are discrete channels; up-firing drivers depend on ceiling height and reflectivity; virtual modes use processing. Center the soundbar under the screen with driver clearance, place the subwoofer near the front wall and experiment, and position rears behind or slightly beside the seating with nearby outlets. Vaulted ceilings, highly absorbent surfaces, seating against the rear wall and open-plan rooms can weaken reflected-height and surround effects.

Network and software
Determine whether speakers use your Wi-Fi or a dedicated link, whether Ethernet is available, which 2.4/5 GHz bands are supported, and whether an account or app is required. Mesh band steering, congestion, firmware changes and dense walls can cause dropouts even when synchronization is otherwise good.
Wireless versus wired
| Factor | Wireless | Wired AVR |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Fewer signal cables and app setup | More cable routing and manual setup |
| Expansion | Usually ecosystem-limited | Mix brands and replace individual parts |
| Inputs | Often limited | Typically more extensive |
| Sound-quality ceiling | Strong in premium packages | Generally higher potential |
| Software dependence | Higher | Lower |
Choose wired equipment when you need many HDMI sources, high-output speakers for a large room, independent amplification, multiple zones, or unrestricted future upgrades. Wireless is usually better for rentals and rooms where routing cable is the dominant problem.

Installation sequence
- Confirm the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the system’s supported formats.
- Connect HDMI to that labeled port; use optical only when necessary.
- Place and power the subwoofer, then place and power the rear speakers.
- Install the manufacturer app, pair components and apply firmware updates.
- Run room calibration and verify dialogue, bass, surround, Atmos and gaming sources.
- Move the subwoofer or rears and retest before wall-mounting anything permanently.
Troubleshooting common failures
No sound
Set TV output to HDMI ARC/eARC, select the soundbar’s TV input, enable CEC if required, choose passthrough/bitstream where appropriate, and power-cycle both devices. Optical works on compatible products but supports fewer formats; Sonos documents an adapter path at its Arc support page.
Pairing and dropouts
Power every rear, move it temporarily closer to the hub, remove duplicate app entries, update firmware and reboot the router. Try Ethernet for the main unit, reduce 2.4 GHz congestion and keep wireless equipment away from metal cabinets and dense obstructions.

Atmos, lip-sync or bass problems
- Confirm the title and subscription include Atmos and that the TV is not converting output to PCM stereo.
- Use audio-delay controls, disable unnecessary TV processing and compare console-to-TV with console-to-soundbar routing.
- Reposition the subwoofer, run calibration and check that night mode or reduced-bass settings are off.
- For weak surround, raise rear levels, confirm a multichannel input and correct the seating-side placement.
The Bottom Line
Buy the complete wireless package if you want surround with minimal cable routing; choose an expandable ecosystem when multiroom music and staged upgrades matter; choose WiSA for carefully verified separate speakers; and choose a wired AVR when connectivity, power, mixing brands and long-term upgradeability outweigh installation convenience.
