The fastest way to restore a yard after snow, ice, or a winter storm is to deal with hazards first, clear only the debris you can move safely from the ground, make small clean cuts on reachable branches, and hold off on judging hidden plant damage until growth returns. Speed here means avoiding rework and keeping people out of dangerous situations. It does not mean climbing a damaged tree or rushing a heavy limb.
Check for hazards before you touch anything
Before any yard work, walk the property from a safe distance and look for the hazards that cause the most serious injuries after a storm: downed or hidden power lines, gas leaks, flooding, hanging limbs, leaning trees, and unstable debris. Snowmelt flooding and storm damage can conceal serious hazards under snow, slush, or fallen material, so a yard that looks calm may not be safe. Follow current local alerts and utility instructions before going outside.
Ice is the storm hazard most likely to produce heavy, sudden damage. The National Weather Service’s “Ice Storms” guidance states: “Heavy accumulations of ice can bring down trees and topple utility poles and communication towers.” The NWS also notes, in its 2026 guidance, that a quarter-inch of radial ice (ice forming in a layer around an object such as a branch or power line) is enough to snap branches and bring down power lines, and that even less ice is enough in windy conditions. That figure is a general hazard threshold, not a forecast of damage to your yard.
If a line is down, or a tree or branch is touching one, treat the whole area as energized. Keep away, keep others away, and contact the utility. Do not attempt to move the branch or the line yourself.

Decide what you can handle from the ground
Most storm damage falls into two groups: material you can clear at ground level with ordinary care, and material that needs a trained professional. The table below sorts common situations. When a task sits in a higher-risk row, stop and bring in help rather than adapting the method.
| Situation | Safe for homeowner from the ground? | Why | Who should handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loose twigs, leaves, and light debris on lawn or beds | Yes | No elevated work and no loaded wood | Homeowner |
| Small, reachable, broken branch that is not under tension and not touching a line | Usually, with care | Within easy reach and cut with hand tools | Homeowner, using sharp hand pruners |
| Loose or hanging limb overhead | No | It could fall while you work beneath it | Qualified arborist |
| Tree too large to handle from the ground | No | University of New Hampshire Extension advises that trees this size be pruned only by professional arborists | Qualified arborist |
| Leaning, split, or cracked trunk | No | Failure may be sudden and the tree may be unstable | Qualified arborist |
| Heavy limb under tension | No | Releasing a loaded limb can cause it to snap or swing unexpectedly | Qualified arborist |
| Any tree or branch touching a power line | No | Contact with a line is an electrical hazard | Utility company first, then an arborist for the tree |
Restore the yard in order
1. Document damage before moving debris
If an insurance claim may be relevant, photograph the damage before you clear anything. University of New Hampshire Extension advises contacting your insurer and taking pictures. Once the scene is changed, photographs cannot show the original condition.

2. Sort debris by risk
Separate small loose material from tree failures and structural hazards. Clear the small material first, since it is low risk and opens access to the rest of the yard. Leave any fallen limb that is large, split, elevated, or still attached to a tree for the assessment in the table above.
3. Make small pruning cuts correctly
For a reachable small branch, use sharp, clean pruning tools. Bypass pruning shears suit small, reachable branches; they are unsuitable for large or hazardous limbs. Extension guidance supports clean tools but does not rank brands or models.

- 420 CFM Powerful Airflow: Delivers up to 420 CFM of airflow for fast removal of dry leaves, grass clippings, dust, and light debris. Ideal for patios, driveways, garages, sidewalks, decks, and everyday residential yard cleanup
- 150 MPH High-Speed Wind: Produces air speeds up to 150 MPH to quickly clear leaves, dust, and lightweight debris from walkways, porches, garages, and other outdoor spaces with less effort
- 2-Speed Adjustable Airflow: Choose between two airflow settings for greater cleaning flexibility. Low speed is ideal for light dust and routine maintenance, while high speed delivers stronger airflow for leaves, grass clippings, and seasonal outdoor cleanup
- Dual 4.0Ah Batteries for Extended Runtime: Includes two 21V 4.0Ah rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to provide longer working time with fewer interruptions. Built-in battery level indicators let you monitor remaining power at a glance. Charger included
- 21V Cordless Convenience: The battery-powered design eliminates the hassle of extension cords and gasoline, providing reliable performance and the freedom to clean patios, garages, sidewalks, balconies, and other outdoor spaces with ease
- Cut location: start just outside the branch bark ridge, the raised ridge where the branch meets the stem, and angle the cut away from the stem.
- Preserve the branch collar: the swollen tissue at the base of the branch helps the tree seal the wound. Cut outside it, not through it.
- Heavier branches: use a series of cuts instead of one long cut, which helps prevent bark from tearing down the trunk.
- Timing: address loose hazards now, and leave fine pruning and finishing work until late winter or early spring where appropriate.
4. Reassess plants as growth resumes
Snow and ice can bend branches and cause hidden cracks that do not show clearly right away. Subtle injury may become visible only after new growth begins in spring. Remove clearly broken or dead sections where you can reach them safely, and wait to judge ambiguous damage to branches or shrubs. Do not try to reattach a broken woody limb; it will not heal back into place.

The following practices make recovery slower because they damage the tree further or force a second round of cleanup. Extension guidance from the University of New Hampshire and Penn State Extension identifies several of them directly.

- TURBO MODE: Battery powered leaf blower lets you power though wet leaves, caked on grass, rocks, and other debris with up to 530 CFM and air speeds up to 110 MPH.
- UP TO 75 MINUTES OF RUNTIME: A single charge of the included 2.5Ah battery lets you work with the EGO POWER+ battery leaf blower for up to an hour and a quarter.
- VARIABLE SPEED DIAL WITH LOCK ON BUTTON: Pull the trigger to choose blower speeds from 250 to 400 CFM and lock them in for ultimate control on this EGO handheld blower.
- TURBINE FAN ENGINEERING: Inspired by advanced aeronautics technology to give this cordless leaf blower high power and better performance than premium gas blowers.
- FAST CHARGING: The included 2.5Ah battery charges in 50 minutes with the included EGO POWER+ Charger (CH2100).
- Flush cuts that remove the branch collar and leave the wound exposed.
- Topping, which can harm the tree’s structure.
- Wound dressing applied to cuts, which extension guidance says can interfere with the tree’s ability to seal the wound.
- Climbing a ladder or a damaged tree to reach storm-damaged branches.
- Cutting a limb that is under tension without professional rigging, because it can release suddenly.
Hire an arborist for the work that is not safe for you
When a task falls into the professional rows above, choose a provider carefully. University of New Hampshire Extension recommends asking about certification, insurance, local references, and getting more than one estimate. Penn State Extension identifies the ISA Certified Arborist credential as a qualification to look for. Before you sign, confirm that the written scope describes exactly which trees and limbs will be handled and what will be left in place.
What the evidence does not settle
Current guidance does not establish a typical time to finish a storm cleanup, an average cleanup cost, or the share of residential trees that recover from winter damage. Those figures depend on species, local climate, the severity of the damage, and municipal and utility rules, so any estimate you hear should be treated as a local judgment rather than a benchmark.
Many storm-damaged trees look worse than they are. As University of New Hampshire Extension puts it in its guidance on storm damage: “The most important message is trees and forests recover from damage, so don’t panic, be safe and seek professional help.” Patience with the uncertain damage is part of a fast recovery, because it avoids cutting material that would have grown back.
