Wing’s Castle is a handmade home in Millbrook, New York, built by Peter and Toni Ann Wing beginning in 1971. Both were 23 when they broke ground. Peter designed and built it over an initial 23-year period, using salvaged materials that included parts from 11 Hudson Valley barns. Today, the property advertises year-round bed-and-breakfast stays with a guided castle tour; it does not allow general public access to the grounds.
Who built Wing’s Castle?
Peter and Toni Ann Wing began the project about a month after marrying in June 1971. They first pictured a home shaped like an old barn with two silos. When they laid out the silos at a size that could provide living space, the forms looked like castle towers. The Wings decided to follow that unexpected design direction. Peter worked from sketches rather than a conventional set of architectural plans described in the available account. Architectural Digest reported that the couple initially expected a two-year project; Toni Ann recalled, “We thought it was a two-year project.”

For the first three years, the couple lived beneath the unfinished structure under a tarp. They moved inside once the frame was ready. Architectural Digest describes Peter’s initial castle-building period as 23 years, but that figure should not be read as the date when every part of the family home and later guest spaces was complete. Guest rooms were added later, after the Wings decided to run a bed and breakfast.
How did salvaged materials shape the construction?
The castle was assembled from materials the Wings found or bought around the Hudson Valley. They dismantled 11 barns and reused elements including stone foundations, floorboards, beams and nails. They also bought bricks reported at five cents apiece and incorporated pieces from an old railroad bridge. The result reflects a long-running, resourceful personal building project rather than a documented construction system intended for others to reproduce.

Architectural Digest’s gallery captions add details about the finish work: Peter made the roof, including hand-cut cedar shingles and handcrafted copperwork, and the exterior stonework took 22 years. These figures describe particular parts of an evolving home; they are distinct from the 23-year initial construction period.
Can you visit or stay overnight at Wing’s Castle?
According to the property’s official website, Wing’s Castle’s bed and breakfast is open year-round, and an overnight reservation includes a 45-minute guided castle tour. The grounds are not open to the general public, so a daytime visitor cannot simply arrive for a tour without staying at the B&B.
