The right choice depends on your home’s architecture, the amount of detail you want, the finish and material, and how the trim relates to nearby doors and baseboards.
These 21 ideas are design directions, not a universal list of standardized styles. Some are recognized profile families; others combine finishes, materials, or components. Match the choice to the room rather than assuming one trim treatment works everywhere.
Profile and layering ideas
1. Crisp flat casing
Use a simple, smooth profile for an understated frame that keeps attention on the window. Flat casing can suit a restrained contemporary look, but it is a design option rather than a single standardized style.
2. Ranch-style casing
Choose Ranch-style casing for a low-profile, streamlined transition around the opening. It is one of the interior trim families identified by Pella.

3. Colonial casing
Colonial casing uses a traditional profile for a classic, symmetrical look. Consider it when it fits the surrounding millwork and the character of the home.
4. Craftsman casing
A Craftsman profile gives the window a more substantial, architectural frame. Select a profile that works with the rest of the room rather than relying on one prescribed build-up.
5. Provincial profile
A Provincial profile offers a softer, more curved look than a plain square-edged surround. Pella lists Provincial among its available profile families.
6. Single-layer casing
Keep the surround to one casing layer for a clean, edited finish. Fine Homebuilding describes single-layer casing as one approach; its simplicity can help the window sit quietly within the room.
7. Stacked molding
Layer molding elements to create more decorative depth around the opening. Fine Homebuilding describes stacked-molding casings; coordinate the added detail with the home’s architecture.

8. Wider Craftsman surround
Wider casing boards can give a window greater visual presence. Proportion the surround to the actual opening and nearby trim: the research does not establish one universally correct width.
Color and wood-finish ideas
9. Painted white casing
A light painted finish gives the window a bright, clean frame. Choose a white that works with the wall, sash, and other finishes; Pella offers prefinished white shades and primed wood.
10. Soft off-white casing
Try a warmer or softer white if stark contrast would feel too sharp in the room. Coordinate the tone with the broader palette rather than treating one white as universally best.
11. Wall-color casing
Paint the casing to blend with the wall for a quieter, more continuous look. Sherwin-Williams discusses coordinating trim color with a room scheme, including blending trim into it.
12. Contrasting painted casing
Use a deliberate color contrast when you want the window surround to stand out. Treat the contrast as a palette choice and consider how it relates to the room’s other finishes.

13. Stained pine casing
Choose pine when you want visible wood grain and a natural finish. Pella offers unfinished pine and stained choices; confirm the selected stock is suitable for the finish you plan to use.
14. Stained oak casing
Oak offers a pronounced natural-wood direction. Pella offers oak trim, and Sherwin-Williams identifies oak among hardwoods suited to clear-finished trim.

Consider MDF for a smooth painted finish. Pella identifies MDF as a cost-effective paintable option, and Sherwin-Williams describes a smooth, pre-primed surface. Check the specific product guidance and room conditions before choosing it.
16. Moisture-conscious PVC casing
PVC may be worth considering in moisture-prone interior areas where its moisture resistance is relevant. Follow the product maker’s installation and finishing directions for the specific material.
Ideas for coordinating the opening
17. Coordinated window and door trim
Repeat a compatible casing profile at windows and doors to make the room feel considered. Fine Homebuilding recommends fitting casing to the home’s architectural style, while Sherwin-Williams discusses trim-color coordination.

18. Casing coordinated with baseboards
Echo the baseboards’ profile or finish in the window frame. Pella recommends considering how window trim relates to other woodwork, including baseboards.
19. A finished stool and apron
Give the bottom of the window its own treatment. The stool is the interior ledge, while the apron is the trim below it; Pella’s glossary distinguishes these components.
20. Curved-profile trim
For a curved or special-shaped opening, investigate trim made for that geometry instead of assuming straight stock will fit. Pella notes that curved trim is available for special shapes.
21. Traditional layered surround with a restrained finish
Pair a more detailed profile with a quiet paint color, or keep the profile simple and let visible wood grain provide character. This is a design combination, not a standardized style. Match its level of detail to the home’s existing architecture.

Compare options by architectural fit, the amount of layering, paint versus visible wood grain, material, and coordination with nearby doors and baseboards. There is no single best trim for every home. A simpler surround may suit a quiet room; a layered or profiled treatment may better fit a more traditional interior.

What window trim does—and what it does not do
HUD’s Casing & Trim reference explains: “Trim is used to conceal construction, to provide a finished appearance at gaps and joints between materials, and to accommodate slight variations between surfaces.” Interior casing finishes the transition between the window frame and wall; a stool is the interior ledge, and the apron sits below it.
Keep interior casing distinct from exterior brick mould and water-management parts. Decorative casing by itself does not fix drafts, waterproof a window, or replace proper installation details. Pella’s glossary distinguishes casing and brick mould, while HUD describes the water-shedding roles of sills and drip caps.
