A “wind turbine wall” is best understood today as a building-integrated wind concept, not a proven off-the-shelf product. Designer Joe Doucet’s proposed kinetic wall used about 25 vertical turbines, each paired with a reported 400-watt generator, for a stated 10 kW peak rating. That figure is a design specification—not annual energy, measured site output or a promise of lower bills.
The idea is compelling because it makes generation part of a façade or screen. Whether it works on a real building depends on wind quality, turbulence, structural loads, noise, maintenance and electrical integration, all of which must be demonstrated for the specific site.

What the wind turbine wall concept is
New York designer Joe Doucet presented a “kinetic wall” of closely spaced vertical-axis turbines that turns a normally static façade element into a moving energy feature. New Atlas reported on December 29, 2021 that the proposal was seeking potential partners, so it should be described as a design proposal rather than a commercially available building product.
The reported arrangement contains approximately 25 vertical turbines. Each was described as connected to a 400-watt generator, giving a calculated total peak rating of 10 kW. Peak rating is the maximum nameplate output under suitable conditions; it does not indicate how much electricity the wall would produce over a year.
#1 Best Overall
- NOTE before Purchase: This wind turbine needs to be driven by a fan or blower at a right angle instead of natural wind. Natural wind needs to be relatively large to generate electricity. The greater the wind energy, the greater the power generated by the generator. If the wind is small, the leaves will rotate slowly, although it will generate electricity, but the output voltage and current will be small, and the light bulb will not turn on.(The natural wind is too small to light up the led.)
- Large Fan Blades: Nubuck Process, Fan blade diameter 17.5cm/6.88", a leaf has 11 blades, the wind is very strong, whether it is made of fan blades, the output wind, or electricity used in wind power conversion effect is very good. Note that the target audience for this product is teenagers or adults, this product is not-a-toy, please keep away from children.
- Power Generation Motor: DC 280 motor. 0~36V all can use. 3800rpm@12V, 7600rpm@24V. used with fan blades, the output current, voltage is also high. Under the fan, the maximum output of about 5.5v 80ma current. Actual measurement. If it is blowing in the hair dryer, current and voltage estimates will be higher. (The sunken circle mark on the tail is the positive pole of the motor.)
- 5V 5W LED Light: The led light has a wiring clip, the red clip is the positive pole, and the black clip is the negative pole. The operating voltage is between 2.4v and 6v. The light can be on when 2.4V. Fully brightened at 5v. The power of this led light is 5 watts. So the brightness is very good, much brighter than the average 3w. The quality is very good.
- Widely Application: Good choice for teaching physical DC wind power generation principle, It also a great teaching tool to develop youth hands-on ability and develop interests. Not only for testing and teaching purposes, but also for many practical DIY purposes. Such as bicycle wind power lighting. The delivery kit needs to assemble by yourself, just enjoy the DIY fun. In actual measurement: Wind motor generator can simultaneously power 8pcs 5V 5W LED lamps.
- No independently verified annual energy yield for Doucet’s wall has been established.
- The available report does not establish household bill savings, installed cost, noise levels, safety certification or field performance.
- Wind at a façade is often turbulent and changes with height, nearby buildings and roof geometry, so nameplate arithmetic cannot substitute for a site assessment.
What “10 kW” does—and does not—tell you
The 10 kW figure is simply 25 proposed units multiplied by a 400-watt generator rating. A project’s useful energy would depend on the wind-speed distribution at the wall, turbine efficiency, downtime, controls and losses in wiring and power electronics. A proper feasibility study would therefore report measured or modelled annual energy in kilowatt-hours, the wind conditions used, and the assumptions behind those calculations.
| Reported item | What it means | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| 25 vertical turbines | Approximate count in Doucet’s proposed wall | Final dimensions, spacing, turbine model and installation details |
| 400 W per turbine | Reported generator rating for each proposed unit | Real-world output across the site’s wind speeds |
| 10 kW peak | Reported combined maximum rating | Annual kWh, capacity factor, bill savings and payback |
Why building integration is technically difficult
Wind resource and turbulence
Buildings accelerate, redirect and shed wind. A wall may face useful flow from one direction but turbulence or wake from another. Roof edges and corners can have high speeds as well as rapidly changing loads. Wind measurements or validated computational modelling at the intended height and orientation are essential before selecting turbines.
Structural loads and attachments
Every rotor transfers forces and vibration into its frame and the building or foundation. Engineers must check normal operating loads, gusts, fatigue, resonance, storm survival, water ingress and the load path through façade attachments. A visually light screen can still impose substantial cyclic loads.

Noise, vibration and maintenance
Moving parts can create aerodynamic and mechanical noise, with higher wind speeds often producing the most demanding operating conditions. Access for inspection, bearing or generator replacement, cleaning and safe shutdown must be designed in from the start. Maintenance planning is particularly important when equipment is distributed across a façade.
Electrical connection
A viable installation needs rectifiers or inverters, protection, monitoring and a strategy for onsite use, storage or export. Interconnection requirements vary by utility and jurisdiction. The design must also address isolation during maintenance, emergency shutdown and what happens when the grid is unavailable.
What related studies actually demonstrate
AMPS roof-integrated experiment
A useful but distinct example is the Aerodynamics Mitigation and Power System (AMPS) study by Gan Chowdhury and colleagues. In a 2019 peer-reviewed experiment at Florida International University’s Wall of Wind, researchers placed small horizontal-axis turbines at the edges of a flat-roof, low-rise building model and tested wind directions from 0° to 90°. The paper reports about a 70% reduction in localized pressure coefficients and a 30–44% reduction in the magnitude of area-averaged peak pressure coefficients for two edge-near configurations in the worst tested direction.

Those are aerodynamic pressure results, not electricity results, and they do not validate Doucet’s vertical-turbine wall. The authors state that detailed energy quantification remained future work. They also identify open questions about other roof types, wall-edge integration, loads transferred to structures and attachments, and operating noise at high wind speeds.

Other small-scale evidence
A 2021 undergraduate thesis in the ITS repository tested a two-bladed Savonius turbine beside a building-wall model at wind speeds of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 m/s. It found that wall-model placement affected performance. This is a small experimental analogue, not a field study of a turbine façade. Read the thesis record.

NYC Future Perfect
In a June 2023 report, Pratt Institute described NYC Future Perfect, a research project exploring lightweight modular structures with turbines built into façades. Students produced proof-of-concept models, while project leaders worked toward prototypes for New York waterfront integration. That supports calling it an active design and research direction, not a completed or widely deployed installation.

How to evaluate a proposed installation
- Characterize the site. Measure wind at the proposed height and account for direction, turbulence, wakes, seasonal variation and nearby future construction.
- Define the engineering basis. Obtain rotor thrust, torque, vibration and storm-load data, then have a qualified structural engineer design the frame, anchors and load path.
- Demand energy evidence. Ask for measured power curves, operating wind-speed range, availability assumptions and an annual kWh model using site-specific data.
- Plan neighbors and workers. Set acoustic limits, vibration criteria, visual clearances, fall protection, emergency shutdown and safe access for maintenance.
- Design the electrical system. Specify inverter certification, protection, monitoring, battery or export arrangements and utility-interconnection requirements for the project’s jurisdiction.
- Compare alternatives. Evaluate the wall against rooftop solar, conventional small wind or a non-generating screen on delivered energy, embodied carbon, maintenance, cost and planning constraints.
A small Savonius generator kit can demonstrate vertical-axis operation for education or a prototype display, but no specific kit performance has been verified here and such a device should not be treated as a building-scale power solution.
Is a wind turbine wall practical now?
It can be a promising architectural and research direction where the visual feature has value and a project team is prepared to validate the engineering. The evidence currently supports a concept, prototypes and controlled aerodynamic experiments—not a dependable, universally applicable façade product. A credible proposal should publish site-specific annual energy, structural calculations, acoustic results, maintenance access and costs before anyone treats a 10 kW peak label as a financial or resilience benefit.
