Yes. Milwaukee states that every M18 battery is compatible with M18 tools and M18 chargers. That means an authentic M18 pack can power an M18 drill, saw, light, or other M18 product, provided you follow the instructions for that specific tool and battery.
Compatibility is not the same as identical performance. M18 packs differ in size, weight, capacity, power tier, runtime, and charging speed. M18 also is a separate platform from Milwaukee M12 and MX FUEL, so an M18 battery should not be treated as a universal Milwaukee battery.

The direct compatibility answer
Milwaukee’s M18 battery FAQ states: “All M18™ Batteries are compatible with M18™ tools & chargers.” Its system-level battery information gives the same guidance. In practical terms, an M18 battery can be used in an M18 cordless tool regardless of whether the pack is a compact CP model, an XC model, an HD model, a standard REDLITHIUM pack, a HIGH OUTPUT pack, or a FORGE pack.
The battery still has to be a genuine M18 product, and it should be used with a Milwaukee M18 charger. Compatibility does not promise that every pack will deliver the same working time, balance, temperature, output, or charge time in every tool. Those differences matter when you are choosing a pack for construction work.

What “M18 compatible” includes—and what it does not
Within the M18 platform
M18 is Milwaukee’s 18-volt cordless platform. The manufacturer’s compatibility statement covers M18 tools and M18 chargers as a system. A battery’s marketing tier or capacity does not remove it from that system: a HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE battery remains an M18 battery and is intended for M18 equipment.
Some tools may draw more current than others, and a larger pack may be physically heavier or change the tool’s balance. Those are application and ergonomics differences, not evidence that the pack has stopped being M18-compatible.
Outside the M18 platform
Milwaukee separately identifies M12 and MX FUEL systems. The fact that all M18 batteries work with M18 tools does not establish that an M18 pack fits an M12 tool, an MX FUEL product, or a charger from either of those systems. Check the platform marking on the tool, battery, and charger before connecting anything. Milwaukee’s system overview lists these families separately: Power Tool Batteries: M12, M18, MX FUEL, Power Supplies.
Choose the pack by size, runtime and demand
Once the basic fit is settled, the useful question is which M18 pack suits the job. Milwaukee groups its packs into CP, XC and HD form factors. These labels describe a design emphasis rather than a guaranteed number of hours in a particular tool.

| M18 pack category | Milwaukee’s description | Best selection logic |
|---|---|---|
| CP | Compact | Choose when low weight, a smaller profile and easier handling matter most. |
| XC | A balance of size, weight, power and runtime | Choose for general-purpose work where you want a compromise between portability and endurance. |
| HD | Larger packs for high-demand applications | Choose when the tool and task place sustained demands on the battery and the extra size is acceptable. |
A category does not guarantee a particular runtime. Runtime changes with the tool, material, accessory, load, operating technique and battery capacity. For example, a compact pack can be entirely suitable for a drill used intermittently, while a high-demand cutting or demolition task may justify a larger pack even though it adds weight.
Capacity is not the only specification
Two M18 batteries can both fit the same tool while feeling very different in use. Capacity affects how long the tool can run before a recharge, but the pack’s physical size and weight affect overhead work, ladders, tight spaces and repeated handling. Compare the capacity and the pack’s CP, XC or HD designation instead of assuming that the newest or largest battery is always the best choice.

Understand the three M18 REDLITHIUM tiers
Milwaukee identifies three broad M18 REDLITHIUM tiers: standard REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE. All remain part of the M18 system, but Milwaukee positions them differently.
| Tier | Milwaukee’s stated positioning | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard REDLITHIUM | Base M18 battery family | A normal M18 option for tools and tasks that do not require the additional features claimed for the higher tiers. |
| HIGH OUTPUT | Milwaukee says it delivers 50% more power and runs 50% cooler than standard REDLITHIUM batteries. | Milwaukee’s comparison is a manufacturer claim; do not treat it as an independent test result. It can be relevant for demanding M18 tools, but it does not make every tool perform 50% better. |
| FORGE | Milwaukee says it provides its most power, fastest charging and longest life. | Consider it when the stated charging and power characteristics justify its price, size or weight for your work. |
The 50% figures and the FORGE positioning come from Milwaukee’s own battery information, not from an independent laboratory study. Tool output and runtime still depend on the individual tool and job conditions.
A concrete example: FORGE XC6.0
The M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0 battery pack, model 48-11-1861, is listed by Milwaukee as compatible with M18 tools and M18 chargers. Its product information references REDLINK intelligence and distinguishes the pack from the larger HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0. Milwaukee specifically notes that the two products do not have the same runtime, so an XC6.0 should not be represented as an equivalent substitute for an HD12.0 simply because both fit M18 tools. Check the current specifications and availability on the FORGE XC6.0 product page before making a purchase.

Can a high-output or FORGE battery be used in an older M18 tool?
Milwaukee’s system statement covers M18 batteries and M18 tools, so a HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE pack is still an M18-compatible battery for an M18 tool. The compatibility statement does not promise that an older tool will use every newer battery feature or deliver the newer battery’s headline performance. The tool’s electronics, motor, load and operating conditions determine what you actually experience.
Use the exact tool manual for restrictions, operating instructions and approved accessories. If the tool is marked M18, the battery is marked M18, and the connection is clean and undamaged, the products belong to the same stated system; do not infer identical runtime or output from the shared label.
Charging: which M18 charger should you use?
Milwaukee says authentic M18 batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers and advises against third-party batteries or chargers. Follow that manufacturer guidance rather than trying to match a battery to a charger by voltage alone. A charger from another Milwaukee platform is not established as compatible merely because it is made by Milwaukee.
Insert the pack according to the charger’s instructions, keep the contacts clean and dry, and follow the temperature and storage directions in the battery and charger manuals. If a charger reports a fault, remove the battery and use the troubleshooting procedure for that model instead of repeatedly forcing the connection.
Milwaukee-published charging examples
The following figures come from Milwaukee’s M18 Super Charger information. Milwaukee says the tests were performed at room temperature and that actual results vary with the battery, charger and surrounding environment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to pair an M18 battery with a tool safely
- Confirm the platform. Look for the M18 marking on both the tool and battery. Do not substitute an M12 or MX FUEL pack.
- Inspect the pack and tool. Do not use a battery with a cracked housing, damaged contacts, corrosion, swelling or other visible damage. Check the tool’s manual for model-specific requirements.
- Use the correct charger. Charge an authentic M18 battery with a Milwaukee M18 charger, as Milwaukee recommends.
- Seat the battery fully. Slide it into the tool’s rails until the locking mechanism engages. A loose pack should not be operated.
- Select the pack for the work. Use CP for minimum bulk, XC for a general balance, or HD for high-demand applications when the added size and weight are acceptable.
- Monitor operating conditions. Excessive heat, unusual behavior or a fault indication calls for stopping work and following the tool and battery manuals.
- Remove the pack before service or storage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for changing accessories, clearing a jam and storing the battery.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming every Milwaukee battery is interchangeable
The M18 statement applies to the M18 platform. It does not cover M12 or MX FUEL equipment. Correct the mistake by matching the platform name on the tool, battery and charger before purchase or use.
Choosing the largest pack for every job
A larger HD battery may be useful for sustained, high-demand work, but its additional weight can make a drill, impact driver or overhead tool harder to control. Start with the task, working position and required endurance, then select CP, XC or HD.
Expecting a battery label to guarantee runtime
Runtime is affected by capacity, tool design, load, material, accessory and technique. Treat Milwaukee’s category descriptions as selection guidance, not as a promise of a fixed number of minutes.

Using a non-M18 charger because the plug fits
Milwaukee specifically says authentic M18 batteries must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers and advises against third-party batteries or chargers. Use the charger specified for the M18 system and consult the relevant manual when a charging problem occurs.
Reading manufacturer comparisons as independent tests
“50% more power,” “50% cooler,” and the published charge times are Milwaukee claims or Milwaukee test results. They are useful reference points, but conditions and tool loads can change the outcome.
A practical M18 battery selection checklist
- Is the tool definitely an M18 model?
- Do you need the lightest setup for overhead work, or longer endurance for sustained loads?
- Would a CP, XC or HD form factor suit the tool’s balance and your working position?
- Is a standard REDLITHIUM pack sufficient, or does Milwaukee’s HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE positioning fit the task?
- Do you already have a Milwaukee M18 charger?
- Have you checked the exact pack model, capacity, current specifications and availability?
- Are you relying on a manufacturer claim with its conditions preserved, rather than assuming a universal runtime or charge time?
Bottom line for M18 tool owners
Yes—according to Milwaukee, all M18 batteries work with M18 tools and M18 chargers. The important qualification is selection, not basic fit: CP, XC and HD packs trade compactness, weight and endurance differently; standard REDLITHIUM, HIGH OUTPUT and FORGE tiers have different manufacturer-stated characteristics; and charge times depend on the pack, charger and conditions. Keep the system boundary clear, use an authentic M18 battery with a Milwaukee M18 charger, and choose the pack size and tier for the actual construction task.
