If your Roomba says “Please empty the bin” even after you emptied it, the bin may not actually be full. The warning can be caused by dust-covered bin-full sensors, blocked sensor ports, a clogged filter or vacuum path, an incorrectly installed bin, or a self-emptying dock that failed to remove the debris.
Start by removing and cleaning the bin, filter, robot sensors, matching bin ports, and vacuum path. Reinstall everything dry and securely, then reboot the Roomba using the procedure for your exact model. If your Roomba uses a Clean Base, AutoEmpty, or AutoWash dock, troubleshoot the bag and evacuation path separately.

What the warning actually means
Roomba’s “empty the bin” message is based on a detected bin-full condition—not only on how much dirt you can see. A nearly empty bin can still trigger the warning when fine dust coats the sensor openings, hair blocks airflow, or the removable bin is not seated correctly.

First, identify the symptom
- “Please empty the bin” or a full-bin icon: The full-bin sensors may still be detecting debris, dust, or an obstructed sensor path.
- A red light-ring sweep toward the rear: On applicable i, j, and s models, this can accompany a full-bin condition.
- Error 36: iRobot defines this as the bin-full sensor not clearing after debris evacuation. It does not automatically mean the bin is physically full or that the dock is broken.
- Error 14: This points more toward a missing, incorrectly seated, incompatible, or improperly filtered bin, or a bin-detect switch that is not activating.
- Vacuum, filter, impeller, or motor warnings: Error categories such as 26, 27, or 30 can indicate a clogged filter, vacuum path, impeller, or motor rather than a full-bin sensor problem. See iRobot’s error-code guidance and error chart.
How to fix a Roomba that keeps saying “empty the bin”
- Remove the dust bin. Switch the robot off or pause it as appropriate for your model, then remove the bin according to the model’s instructions.
- Empty more than the visible pile. Open the bin door and remove compacted hair, pet fur, and fine dust from the inlet, door, filter compartment, and any evacuation opening.
- Remove and inspect the filter. Replace it if it is damaged, deformed, saturated, or badly clogged. Do not assume every Roomba filter is washable; check the instructions for your exact model.
- Clean the bin and bin door. For applicable s-, i-, and j-series troubleshooting, iRobot instructs users to rinse the bin and bin door and let them air-dry. Do not reinstall either part while wet.
- Clean the robot’s full-bin sensors. Use a clean, dry microfiber or soft cotton cloth. Wipe the sensor areas inside the robot where the bin sits.
- Clean the matching bin ports. Wipe the corresponding inner sensor ports on the removable bin, any applicable outer ports, and all sides of the bin. Dust on the bin walls can keep the full-bin reading active.
- Clear the vacuum path and cleaning head. Remove the rollers or brushes as your model allows. Clear hair and compacted dust from the brush chamber, the route into the bin, and the bin’s evacuation port.
- Reinstall the dry filter and bin. Confirm the filter is fitted, the bin door is closed, the bin clicks fully into place, and no latch, gasket, or sensor area is obstructed.
- Reboot the Roomba. Use the restart procedure for your exact model rather than applying one universal button combination.
- Run a short test. If the warning returns immediately, move to the self-emptying-dock checks below or contact iRobot if your robot has no dock-related cause.
iRobot’s general guidance emphasizes cleaning all applicable full-bin sensors and ports. Some Wi-Fi-connected models have six sensor locations, but layouts differ, so do not assume every Roomba uses the same number.
Use only air around sensor openings if the model’s instructions call for it. Do not spray cleaning solution directly onto sensors, scrape sensor windows with metal tools, or use compressed air in a way that drives dust deeper into the robot. A dry cloth is sufficient for the normal sensor-cleaning procedure. See iRobot’s full-bin sensor guidance and Error 36 maintenance steps.
If your Roomba has a Clean Base, AutoEmpty, or AutoWash dock
A self-emptying dock adds several possible failure points. The robot may still contain debris because evacuation never completed, even though the dock appears powered.

Check the bag and dock lid
- Confirm that a bag is installed and correctly fitted.
- Replace it if it is genuinely full.
- Make sure the dock lid is fully closed.
- If debris has settled near the top of a partly full bag, gently redistribute it only as directed by iRobot.
According to iRobot, a solid red or white dock indicator can indicate a full, missing, or incorrect bag, while a flashing red indicator can indicate an evacuation-port clog. See iRobot’s dock evacuation guide.
Confirm that the robot has the correct bin
Not every Roomba bin supports automatic evacuation. Verify that your robot has the bin designed for its dock, including the required evacuation port. A standard non-evacuation bin can leave debris in the robot even when the robot itself is operating normally.
Clear the dock evacuation path
Unplug the dock before opening or servicing it. Check the dock debris inlet, the robot’s evacuation port, and the clear tube beneath the dock for compacted hair or fine dust. Follow the exact dock-maintenance instructions for your model when exposing or reinstalling the tubing.

Controls differ by model and app version:
- Some models show Empty Bin beneath the CLEAN button.
- Newer app layouts may place the control under Robots > Dock Controls.
- Some i- and s-series models use the HOME button while docked.
- Some j-series models require holding the relevant button for two to five seconds.
- Some newer models evacuate only after a qualifying cleaning mission.
- iRobot says applicable Roomba 100/1000 models cannot be force-emptied manually; their compatible dock evacuates automatically after a successful mission of at least five minutes.
After cleaning the robot and dock, place the robot correctly on the powered dock and run the appropriate evacuation test. If the app layout or button sequence differs, use the instructions for your exact model.
What Error 36 means
Error 36 means the bin-full sensor did not clear after the robot attempted to evacuate debris. It can result from dirty robot sensors, dirty bin ports or walls, debris remaining in the vacuum path, a clogged dock evacuation route, a full or incorrectly fitted bag, an incompatible bin, or poor robot-to-dock communication.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Error 14 means
Error 14 is more closely associated with bin detection or installation. Check that:
- The correct bin is installed.
- The filter is present and seated correctly.
- The bin door is closed.
- The bin clicks completely into place.
- The bin-detect switch, latch, gasket, and sensor areas are free of debris.
- A self-emptying robot has the correct evacuation-capable bin.
A damaged bin or latch can create a persistent detection problem even after cleaning.

Can you tell Roomba to keep cleaning when full?
On applicable s-series and related models, the app may offer Robot Settings > Cleaning Preferences > Bin Full Behavior. The choices may include Do not clean when full and Keep cleaning when full.
This is only a temporary workaround. Do not use it to bypass a genuinely full bin, restricted airflow, a clogged vacuum path, or a dock that cannot evacuate debris. Continuing to run under those conditions can reduce pickup and allow the underlying problem to persist. The setting is also not available on every model.
When to replace a filter, bin, or dock
Use this repair-before-replace order:
- Clean and reseat existing parts. This resolves many sensor and installation problems.
- Replace the filter when it is saturated, damaged, deformed, or no longer permits reasonable airflow.
- Replace the bin if its door, latch, sensor ports, seal, or evacuation port is damaged.
- Repair or replace the dock only after checking the bag, lid, tube, contacts, sensors, and bin compatibility.
- Contact iRobot when the warning persists after documented maintenance or when a motor or electrical fault is indicated.
iRobot’s official parts catalog lists model-specific filters, bins, bags, brushes, batteries, and home bases. Prices and availability change; verify the exact model before ordering.

When to contact iRobot
Request support if the warning returns immediately after thorough cleaning and a reboot, the bin cannot be detected, the bin is cracked or will not latch, the dock will not evacuate after its bag and path have been checked, or the robot reports a vacuum-motor, impeller, or electrical fault.
Do not jump straight to replacing the whole Roomba. A filter, bin, disposal bag, dock tube, or sensor-cleaning issue is often a more proportionate first repair. If several unrelated components have failed on an older robot, compare the cost of compatible parts and dock repairs with replacement.
