A few older pothos leaves yellowing and dropping over time can be normal. Sudden or widespread leaf loss is more concerning, especially alongside yellowing, soft leaves, wilting, or soil that stays wet. Start by checking the soil and drainage, then review light, temperature, and recent care changes; fallen leaves alone do not identify the cause.
Is pothos leaf loss normal?
As a pothos grows, its oldest leaves may gradually yellow and fall. If only a few older leaves near the base are affected and the rest of the vine looks healthy, natural aging is plausible. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension and North Carolina State Extension both describe older leaves yellowing and dropping over time.
Look more closely when loss is sudden, affects several parts of the plant, or comes with other symptoms. Yellowing, soft foliage, wilting, and poor growth can accompany care problems, but none of these signs alone confirms a specific cause. Wisconsin Extension’s pothos guidance and Penn State Extension’s plant-health diagnostic guide describe symptoms that can overlap.
Check watering and drainage first
Persistently wet soil and poor drainage can contribute to root rot and leaf symptoms. Wisconsin Extension identifies overwatering as the most common cause of root rot in pothos, which may have brown or absent roots. Penn State also warns that too much water can lead to root rot. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists yellowing, soft leaves and stems, leaf fall, and stunted growth among common symptoms of overwatering in container plants.

What to inspect
- Feel the growing medium rather than relying on a fixed watering calendar. Wisconsin Extension advises letting the surface dry slightly; Penn State says to water when the soil is dry.
- Check that the pot has open drainage holes and that water is not collecting in a saucer or outer pot.
- If the soil remains wet, do not water again yet. Watering frequency varies with the plant’s conditions, so a universal weekly schedule is unreliable.
- If the medium drains poorly or stays wet, consider a well-draining, well-aerated potting mix when repotting. Repotting is not a cure for leaf loss caused by other factors.
Drooping can also happen when a pothos needs water: Penn State notes that too little water may make its leaves temporarily droop. Check the soil before watering, because drooping by itself does not prove the plant is dry.
Review light and recent moves
Pothos generally does best in filtered light or moderate to bright indirect light. Strong direct sun can yellow leaves, according to Penn State Extension. In low light, foliage may lose some of its brightness or variegation, as Penn State and North Carolina State Extension note. If the plant was recently moved to a much dimmer place, that change may also contribute to leaf loss as it adjusts.

Check for temperature and care changes
Cold drafts or abrupt temperature changes can damage foliage. Wisconsin Extension associates low temperatures or sudden temperature changes with brown patches; Penn State’s general diagnostic guidance also includes cold damage and ethylene exposure among possible causes of falling leaves. Review recent changes in the plant’s location and look for drafts before assuming the problem is a pest or disease.
Fertilizer may be another clue. Wisconsin Extension notes that excess fertilizer can cause salt buildup and blackened leaf tips or margins. Those symptoms are not specific to fertilizer, since overwatering and inadequate watering can also cause them. Consider recent feeding along with the plant’s soil and other symptoms rather than treating leaf drop as proof of a fertilizer problem.

Look for pests only when there are other clues
Pothos can be affected by mealybugs and scale, according to Wisconsin Extension. Inspect the plant for visible pests if it is declining in other ways, but leaf loss alone is not evidence of an infestation. If the decline is severe or the cause remains unclear, inspect the roots or contact a local extension office or plant-diagnostic service instead of applying a treatment without a diagnosis.

- Note whether the fallen leaves are older leaves near the base or whether loss is happening across the vine.
- Check the soil moisture, drainage holes, and whether water is standing in a saucer or outer pot. Let the medium dry between waterings.
- If the plant is in strong direct sun or deep shade, move it to filtered or bright indirect light.
- Check for cold drafts and consider recent changes in location, watering, or fertilizer.
- After addressing the likely cause, selectively prune unattractive vines if needed. Wisconsin Extension recommends selective pruning to manage vine length and encourage growth.
A well-draining indoor potting mix may be useful if the existing medium drains poorly and repotting is appropriate. It is not necessary just because an otherwise healthy plant sheds a few old leaves.
