Yellow leaves on a poinsettia can result from soil that is too wet or too dry, poor drainage, cold or temperature swings, or insufficient light. The leaves alone cannot identify the cause. Check the soil and pot first, then review the plant’s location before changing how you water or feed it.
Check the soil and pot before changing care
Feel the soil surface and check whether the pot feels unusually wet. If the plant sits inside decorative foil or an outer pot, look for standing water and confirm that the inner pot can drain. Wet conditions and water trapped in a decorative cover can lead to yellowing and loss of lower leaves, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
Yellowing lower leaves that drop can accompany overwatering, but a very dry poinsettia may also wilt and drop leaves. A plant that wilts or collapses while its soil is wet raises concern about root damage; yellow leaves by themselves do not confirm root rot or another disease.
Match the first response to what you find
| What you observe | What to investigate | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Lower leaves yellow and drop; soil stays wet or water collects in the cover | Overwatering or poor drainage; root damage may follow | Do not add water while the soil is wet. Let excess water escape and empty the saucer or cover. Colorado State University Extension and Iowa State identify wet conditions and drainage as concerns. |
| Soil is dry; plant is limp or wilting | Underwatering or an excessively dry period | Water thoroughly, let the pot drain fully, and check soil moisture by touch rather than following a fixed calendar. Iowa State and the University of Minnesota Extension recommend responding to soil condition. |
| Yellowing or leaf drop followed cold exposure, a draft, or a sudden temperature change | Cold or environmental stress | Move the plant to a bright, stable spot away from drafts and cold glass. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension reports that cold-exposed poinsettias can yellow and drop leaves rapidly. |
| The plant receives little natural light | Insufficient light may contribute | Choose a brighter location without placing the plant against cold glass. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources lists inadequate light as a possible factor. |
| Water, drainage, light, and placement seem appropriate, but pale foliage persists | Limited fertilization or another plant-health issue may be possible | Consider fertilizer only when the plant is at an appropriate growth stage; seek local extension advice if it continues to decline. Colorado State University Extension, Minnesota Extension, and UC ANR discuss these as possible care or health factors. |
Water according to soil moisture and drainage
When the soil surface feels dry, water thoroughly and allow the pot to drain completely. Remove decorative foil or take the inner pot out of its cover while watering if needed, then empty collected water. Do not leave the plant sitting in a saucer or cachepot full of water. If the soil is already wet, hold off on watering and make sure excess moisture can escape.

There is no reliable universal watering calendar for an indoor poinsettia: potting mix, container, and room conditions affect how quickly soil dries. Checking the soil is more useful than watering on a set schedule.
Give the plant bright light and a stable temperature
Place the poinsettia where it receives bright natural light. Colorado State University Extension recommends at least six hours of daily indirect natural light and advises diffusing direct sun when needed: its poinsettia care guidance.

Keep it away from cold drafts, exterior doors, cold windows, fireplaces, space heaters, and heating vents. Temperature guidance differs by source and region: Minnesota Extension calls 65–70°F ideal indoors and says exposure below 50°F can damage poinsettias; Iowa State recommends 60–70°F. Treat these as extension recommendations, not a single universal threshold.
Hold fertilizer and fungicide unless the circumstances fit
A nitrogen shortage is one possible explanation for pale foliage, but fertilizer is not a general cure for yellow leaves. Minnesota Extension advises against fertilizing during the holiday display and recommends starting when new growth appears. If you keep the plant and it begins growing, use a complete houseplant fertilizer according to its label, after checking moisture, drainage, light, and temperature.

Colorado State mentions an all-purpose fungicide only when root rot is confirmed. Yellow leaves alone are not a reason to apply fungicide.

Check leaf undersides for insects such as aphids or whiteflies, as UC ANR recommends. Treat this as an inspection step when you see pest signs; the cited guidance does not establish pests as the usual cause of yellowing.
