1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA lawn mower pull cord that will not move is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First check that the mower’s control bar is held as directed for starting; then consider blade drag from grass or clippings. If the rope remains locked—especially after the blade hit an object—stop pulling and arrange a proper inspection. A rope that pulls but will not retract points to a different problem: the recoil starter.
Start with the safe checks
Read the operator’s manual before maintenance because controls and service procedures vary by mower. Briggs & Stratton advises referring to the manual before starting maintenance: manufacturer troubleshooting guidance.

- For a mower whose starting procedure uses a control bar, hold the bar fully against the handle before pulling the rope. This releases the flywheel brake on designs that use that arrangement.
- If grass or clippings may be obstructing the blade, turn the mower off, disconnect the spark plug wire, and move it to a hard surface. Clear debris only as the manual permits, keeping hands and feet away from the blade. Do not assume every mower should be tilted in the same direction.
- Return to a safe operating position and try the rope once. Do not yank repeatedly against a hard stop.
- If it remains locked, the mower struck a fixed object, or you see damage, stop and seek model-specific diagnosis. If the rope moves but will not retract or engage, have the recoil starter checked.
1. The flywheel brake is still engaged
On many walk-behind mowers, the control bar must be held against the handle to release the flywheel brake for starting. If the bar is not fully down, the rope may feel stuck or unusually difficult to pull. Briggs & Stratton and a mower operator manual both specify holding the control bar against the handle before pulling the starter rope: Briggs & Stratton guidance and operator-manual support.

2. Grass or clippings are dragging against the blade
Tall grass can make the blade drag, and accumulated clippings can obstruct movement beneath the deck. Before checking underneath, switch off the mower and disconnect the spark plug wire. Move it onto a hard surface, then clear excessive clippings only in the manner allowed by the operator’s manual. Keep hands and feet clear of the blade; consult the manual for the correct mower position rather than tilting it by assumption. These precautions follow Briggs & Stratton’s maintenance guidance.
Once the mower is back in a safe operating position, try the cord without forcing it. If it still meets a hard stop, there may be another cause.

3. The blade adapter or an engine part is damaged
A broken blade adapter or bent crankshaft can make a starter rope hard to pull. A sudden lock after the blade strikes a fixed object is a reason to stop rather than keep pulling: the blade, blade adapter, crankshaft, or flywheel key may need inspection. A mower troubleshooting chart lists a bent crankshaft and broken blade adapter as possible causes and directs crankshaft concerns to an authorized service center: manufacturer manual support. Briggs & Stratton likewise advises checking the blade and crankshaft for straightness and inspecting the flywheel key after an impact: flywheel FAQ.
Do not treat flywheel removal as a routine fix. Briggs & Stratton says to use an appropriate puller and warns: “Never strike the flywheel. Even a slightly damaged flywheel presents a safety hazard and must be replaced.” A bent crankshaft, damaged blade, persistent lock, or unusual vibration calls for model-specific service rather than repeated starting attempts.

4. The recoil starter, pulley, or rewind spring has failed
The recoil starter winds and retracts the rope and engages the engine. A broken rewind spring or worn or stuck pulley can prevent the rope from returning; a faulty recoil assembly can also fail to engage the engine. The symptom helps narrow the possibilities:
- The rope will not rewind: the spring or pulley is a more direct suspect.
- The rope pulls but does not engage the engine: the recoil assembly may not be engaging.
- The rope is blocked while the engine will not turn: first consider brake engagement, blade obstruction, or engine and blade-related damage rather than assuming the recoil assembly is at fault.
These symptoms are clues, not a definitive diagnosis. Before replacing a spring, pulley, or recoil starter assembly, identify the mower or engine model and confirm exact part compatibility. Replacing the recoil does not resolve an engaged brake, blade drag, bent crankshaft, or broken blade adapter.

When to stop and get service
Stop troubleshooting and consult an authorized service center if the cord remains immovable after the safe checks, the mower has struck a fixed object, the blade appears damaged, vibration is present, or you suspect a bent crankshaft or flywheel damage. These parts and procedures can present safety risks, and the correct repair depends on the mower model. For a rope that fails to retract or engage, have the recoil assembly diagnosed before choosing a replacement part.
